  • Victim of road side robbery

Dear moderator, I am not sure is this the right place to post this thread. Kindly move if it is not, and change the title also if required.

Here I would like to share a sad and horrible incident happened to my friend in the last week.

My friend was traveling in a bike with his colleague somewhere in Vyasarpadi-Chennai. It was around 1-2 PM road was almost empty under the hot sun. Suddenly another motor cycle rider started chasing them and scolding them without any reason. And made him to stop the bike by blocking their way then took the key with him. My friend was totally confused and afraid of seeing the person itself as he is looking like a criminal.

My friend was thinking like he has done some mistake on the road while driving. And started saying sorry for the same. Then that guy behaved friendly and told him that, his friends would reach there now, who are not so good people. So better to hide his valuable things like gold chain, ring and an Apple I-pad. He was very tricky to keep it with him as pretending as a help. Then that guy told that 'Get me some cool drinks and I will leave you free". But that criminal escaped nicely from the cool drink shop" with his valuables!!!.

And the nearby police station refused to charge a case on this as the beginning of the incident(blocking their bike) was not their area. And other police station also refused as the robbery was not under their area.!!!. Finally with somebodies help he has registered a compliant online to the commissionaire of police. And waiting for justice.

I have shared this incident to make all the drivers aware this type of bad incidents.

Re: Victim of road side robbery

I was riding down to Hyderabad from Pune, on the way a WagonR asked me to pull aside as he needed some help. The man looked decent and he had his wife and kid in the car too. Out of humanity I stopped my motorcycle and enquired what he needed. He told me that he tried to withdraw cash but his card was blocked in the last ATM and he needed some money to reach Hyd. The reason he gave me was not convincing me at all but I was in a very bad mood for some personal reason and this inhibited my ability to think logically. I could have asked him that I can fill fuel in his car rather than giving cash, but I finally did the blunder of handing over 600 Rs to that family man.

We exchanged our numbers, but as expected, it was a SCAM. That number is not reachable ever since and I also noted down hi cars registration number, even that is invalid.

That is one of the worst part of the city where criminals are bred. It was also advised by police not to stand near the train doors and talk over mobile phone. Reason being, people who stand next to the track throw stones at these people making them to loose their mobile from hand. They just grab them and run away. Untraceable after that.

Freaking goons. Most of the north Chennai i would say, Vyasarpadi, Perambur, Minjur.

Sad to hear that your friend was robbed. But I am staying in that area for the last 36 years. And I know the people there are rogues who at the smallest hint of a new person/timid person will take advantage. Like crossing the road just like that and starting a quarrel with them. There is no use of complaining to the police as they are afraid to go to their area. The only way to escape there clutches is to ride off from that spot and cross their area but with extreme caution. Because they will not cross their area and move into other's area. It is their way of living (sad).

Re: Victim of road side robbery

Thanks to all of you for the responses...

I always use public transport to travel through risky areas instead of taking my bike. And avoid wearing rich looking dresses. (I used to wear lungi and old shirt when visiting Pudupet for bike spares ). Even the guys at petrol pump will try to cheat if you are looking rich or innocent. They will not fill the requested quantity of fuel or they will not give the balance amount unless you remind them.

Always take a spare key of bike with you, Police have bad habit to take away your key when you are waiting at the signal. Whenever this happen I would use my spare key to start my bike instead of begging with them. I have the required documents and license and obeying traffic rules including helmet. Instead of this bad behavior, If they request me to cooperate with them to check the documents I would have obey them. Always be careful friends.

Common in Ghaziabad and Noida, always keep eyes and ear open. Whoever call, just don't listen. Don't approach UP police at night, they themselves could charge you for nothing or may start beating you for no reason as they are mostly drunk in a PCR van. Never follow traffic lights in odd hours. Avoid night riding as far as possible. Most important Ride in pair, e.g. two and look like a hooligan yourself that could be most beneficial deterrent.

                    ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

Mainly two incident came to my mind when my presence of mind helped me I guess. I was a home tutor so often come late in night, so once I was coming from Shastri Park to Khajuri Khas Delhi I was given hand near Usmanpur, I thought for a second a pushed the brake lever to slow down (no intention to stop) and suddenly saw two three more men came running toward me to catch my bike. It was not deserted by crowded even then. I panicked and instantly leaned my bike, and pulled the throttle with hard grip. I got a jerk as one of somehow managed to hold my grab rail but could not grip properly and by that time I knew that come what may, I will fly and let them chase me till my home. Till now, I feel scared of those moment but it keep me on my toes. (This has happened in early 2004, so far the area is Ok, still not great for late night)

On second instance, I was coming from a relatively notorious area by my car (lot of chain or mobile snatching), and two person on a pulsor was riding ahead of me. I blew horn and gave them dipper but they did not give me side even when almost left side was open and I was asking side from right side. Suddenly they slightly moved left and gave me enough side to cross comfortably, I accelerated and bang, their bike hit my left rear gate. What the hell, how come there was a foot gap at least when I decided to cross and I was making damn sure to clear past them, and in rear view I saw them loosing the balance as if they are falling but they let go of their bike very easily on the road and started walking toward my car, I weighted (instinct) for them to come near my car toward me from their bike and as they are almost on my door, I drove in as fast as I could (thinking they would run to their bike and will start and could follow me), got a head start and zoomed past all the traffic. I never had driven that fast in 8-9 o'clock Delhi Traffic, I continued that till my home fearing who knows they might still be behind me and use some kind of gun or knife.
People later told me from their area who comes to my office that it is a general tactics used by those kind of people, first they bang their bike in cars and when driver stops to see the damage they catch hold of the driver, beat him and snatch all the valuable or claim for compensation. Instincts saved me that day.
Understand the risk and respect the bike, understand the bike and respect the risk.

                      Lucky stars i will say.
I have heard quite a few horror stories through word of mouth. Thankfully never witnessed firsthand.
This is the reason i NEVER stop for anyone asking for a lift - no matter if it is some old guy/ woman/ child/ cripple at anytime of the day. I do feel a pang of guilt but i overcome it by not asking for ride from strangers when i'm on foot ;p
Although i would like to share here that a few times when i have been pushing my bike due to punctures mid-route. Fellow bikers have stopped and offered help i.e. fuel - just in case.... Can't deny it feels good

Cheers & Ride safe out there.

I feel instinct tell us right things to do, if someone ask for lift the obvious comes to mind 'motive?, good/bad?', instead when we choose to offer in that case other is not asking for it, that is safer and that is perhaps we are most likely being offered help as we are not asking for it. I would avoid giving lift to girls or aunties any case as it could turn out to be a nightmare than an old uncle walking with some heavy bag in hand down.

But experiences like these even if not happened with us first hand make us more careful. I expect such instances every night I travel and mentally prepared what to be done. I will go down fighting cause I know that under most circumstances I could be victim of road side murder as these guys are merciless and would not like to leave evidence behind, rest I pray to God it does not come to that
