              THURSDAY,17/09/2009:

Took the morning flight of jetlite to Port Blair. Reached Andaman at 11:30hrs.from the airport we straight went to hotel megapode nest.temp in Kolkata was around 40celcius and now it was 27 in Port Blair what a pleasant change. View from Megapode was very nice and we all were very happy to reach Andaman.

After lunch we straight moved towards the corbyns beach. Spend some good time there enjoying the beach and taking snaps of surroundings. Here in Bengal we are not used to see such blue sea and we were speechless with the beauty of the clear blue sea. Enjoyed a lot there.

Now it was time to move on from there and we went to Cellular jail.

              Some facts about the jail:
              1. Andaman is named after Hanuman.
              2. British came here in1857.
              3. History says before cellular jail British used to keep prisoner in Viper Island.
              4. In 1896 they started to build this jail to keep political prisoner and it was completed in 1906 costing 5lakhs at that time.
              5. Most of the prisoners were Bengali (373). Three Maharastrian including two savarkar brothers. 73 Sikh prisoner and many others whose name are not found till date.
              6. British officers used to live in Ross Island.
              7. Among 7 wings of the jail only three are left now (wing no: 1,6,7). In 1942 jail was badly damaged by Japanese bombing. A govt hospital is now built in the ruins of the wings.
              8. From 9th September 1937 to January 1938 all political prisoner was freed.

There was a light and sound show in the evening, which could not be recorded as no camera was allowed inside at that time.

We returned to our hotel remembering the sacrifice of the freedom fighter. How bravely they fought for freedom and for them only we are enjoying our freedom.

              streets of PortBlair:

Nice report and pics that take us back in time. Thanks for sharing.

Is it worth touring the island on a bike? How large is the whole place?

Looks like not much has changed since my last visit there. There are a few more people on the streets, there is more light and vehicles on the streets. Corbyn's cove and the beaches are as deserted as it was 2 decades ago. I guess we Indians are not too beach-friendly. Besides, most Indians do not even know how to swim!
The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!
