me being a nature and himalayan lover (more of himalayan) have been closely monitoring the climatic conditions for some time now..
de-forestation,ever increasing construction etc are all hampering the ecological balance of the himalayas. take the case of a hill station , shimla
the min and max temp for 19th nov 2000 ,2002 and 2004 are as follows:
2000 - 16.9/6.9
2002 - 15.7/8.9
2004 - 16.4/10.0

the min temp ysterday was 3.1 degree above wat it was in 2000!! also for the last 5-6 yrs, there has been no/very little snow on christmas as well as new yr.wat does this mean? the global warming is effecting us , effecting our himalayas , water resources (glaciers).in a recent study,it was found that the glaciers are melting very fast and because of less snow every yr , as a result their size is shrinking.

now lets take the case of amritsar , a city in punjab (not in hills). lets compare the temp of 2000 ,2002 and 2004 (19th nov)
2000 - 26.3/9.7
2002 - 27.0/11.8
2004 - 27.0/6.0

this yr the min temp of a city in plains is less than that of a city (shimla) in hills!
the temp of amritsar is dropping every yr which is opp to that of shimla. this thing has totally confused me!! how is this possible!

neways , authorities seem to be waking up. construction has now been banned in some hill-stations..

rohtang pass , one of the most unpredicting passes , which used to close down in early nov some 6-7 yrs ago , now remains open till mid nov too. last yr it was open till dec!! now how shockin is that?

well , man is tryin to fight against nature, tryin to change the nature's rules. the day is not far , when mother nature will strike back , n that strike will prove very costly for humans..

Good report Bunny...this is one issue close to my heart.
Everyday by virtue of feeding off the "basic amenities" we do irreversible damage to mother nature. Our callousness affects not only us, but those faraway from us. Yet we never learn. The scenario shown in the movie "Day After tomorrow" is actually not far from reality- many events shown there have happened. Yet countries dont learn.
As bikers, it is our responsibility to do our bit by checking emissions and keeping bike well tuned- those fancy exhausts might get u that "sound" (iritating as they might be!) but do little in controlling the pollution. Normal regular maintenance is good enough- nothing much.
Lets help mother nature before she starts striking back - btw, earthquakes, floods, cloudbursts, melting glaciers, etc are all the diff ways she does keep coming back at us. TO do more do visit this wonderful site: http://www.earthshare.org/get_involved/involved.html

Its time to make a difference- now or never.
With great power, comes great responsibility- to man, machine and especially to mother nature.

i was actually comparing temp and snowfall accounts for shimla region for the last 5 yrs or so.
i got the temp and snowfall database for all the 5 yrs (each day to be precise)..it tells a lot abt the change in the climatic conditions

ABt why the min temp in Amritsar is lower than in Shimla is probably because of the fast amount of terrestrial radiation that must be taking place leading to faster loss of temperature while in the mountains, more vegetation that traps solar radiation (insolation) during the day do not allow heat to escape that fast at nite. This could be a possible reason because of the dichotomy in the habitation of the areas where there is a more "extreme" trend of temperature in the cities.

If u want to understand more of this geographical fact then u can check this site: http://www2.una.edu/geography/classes/ge101/101ch3.html
- just one among the various sites on geography u will find...

i think we should do something to get some awareness in people about how they are damaging their environment and ecosystem and in turn killing themselves..

I agree..the earth is turning into an ugly hell..faster than ever before.
Market forces and commercialization have created social and natural havoc. People have been condemned to death,in the name of profit and loss.We all are blindly poisoning the earth by our greed and desires.
Its something everybody knows and talks about but nobody does anything because we are totally engulfed into it and coming out is nearly impossible.
How easy is it for anyone of us to give up our bike for something like this?

A bike causes far less pollution from usage than by its manufacturing process.

Bunny , don't worry *too* much abt the environment :
1>Many NGO's actually make money by using such causes as bait ( inflate the dangers , I read like Greenpeace actually had a baby seal killed and skinned merely to make an ad tht would make people feel sympathetic and donate money to .....Greenpeace in the name of animal rights . True many Greenpeacers are genuine cares but many just have a financial agenda .

2>Right now is a time between 2 ice ages , ice ages come every 10000 years , and between them the earth grows warmer and warmer until the next ice age hits .

The earth is not as delicate as made out to be , Relax , chill . Enjoy automtive technology and dead dinosaur liquid remains while you can .
Man will occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of the time he will pick himself up and continue on.
