thanks for the reply aryan da!
I have no qualms as far as the brand is concerned. the cam should be user-friendly and VFM. This will be my first SLR.
Is EOS 1000D good? i don't mind spending 5k more over 22k if i get anything still better.

        • @Ankit: The 1000D is a really good cam for starting out with the field of photography with a D-SLR. It would satisfy ANY kind of requirement that you must have. I still a 400D D-SLR which has long been out of production. I was VERY satisfied with it; it is only NOW (after using it for 3 years) that I am starting to feel the need to upgrade to a better 'body'.

So, there. I would suggest for starting out and all, get the 1000D. It's a good cam, no doubt about that!

Thanks! i am now sure that 1000d will be good (i know how good a photographer u are). There were people who were telling me to go in for a Nikon rather that the Canon. But i think i'll stick to Canon then.

See, different people have different perspective and requirement. Choosing a brand is purely subjective. We are not going to differentiate by the pixel peeping anyhow. So, it doesn't really make a difference whether a Canon is better or Nikon. It's totally your call. What you CAN do is, you can try the Canon EOS 1000D and something like the Nikon D3000 for useability and comfort levels. The one which you feel more comfortable using, you can buy!

It is not hard really, to choose a system/ camera body. The hard part comes in later - while choosing quality glass according to the 'subjects' that you wish to shoot.
              :)

Now after going through few pages of this forum I am again more confused between buying a Mega-Zoom or a Entrylevel DSLR

Can somebody help me on this???

PS: I am used to in point and shoot Camera's like Canon powershots and Sony Cybershots

                    • @Durvesh you need to decide what do u want it for
Canon 1000D Slr - awsome great picture , excellent for low light condition , u get a SLR so the oomph factor...no video capablity no live view so u have to hold it to your eye like a real photographer to click pics. standard lens is only 3x (55mm) Bulky to cary around and heavy to use

the SX20 IS - smaller than above but will not fit in pocket.. good picture, but nothing compared to SLR. long zoom 20x good video capablity.
do look around there are many such superzoom in the market(like nikon p100 fuji hs10) canon is hte more expensive with lesser feature but better picture. this is from various review that i browsed.

canon sx210is - really slim pocket size superzoom with 14x . to get a potrait of that pretty girl at the end of the room. get that spy like feeling and it too has good quality.

so decide what size of camera u want to carry around and ur descion is made..

ALso to other there.. Has anyone bought the FujiFilm HS10 (me like idea of 30x) ? heard the price is dropped to Rs25,000 same as the Nikkon p100 and SX20

my main subject would be landscape/sceneries and some potraits

If you ask ME, I have not used Sigma's 18-200mm, but have used Canon's 18-200mm and found it to be pretty okay for general purpose usage. If you, however, are looking to use your images professionally, then, get something better in the focal length range.

However, since you are starting out with a 550D, I feel a 18-200mm lens would cover ALL the major focal length requirements that a photographer generally has. However, I have not used the Sigma 18-200mm, so, won't really be able to comment on that one.
