    • Nikon L810 or something else ???

      Hi ClickGurus,

Well, till 10 min. earlier I'd never thought that I'll be ever posting in this thread for a camera query. Basically I am (was) not that much interested in these kinda stuff. But anyway time changes your needs and then need changes your interest.
Comming to my query, I am out in search of a nice, not-so-techy/advanced, high res., high optical zoom and with Full HD (1080p) video recording digital camera. in a range of around 12-13 K. The idead came to my mind by a simple requirement of a very simple digital camera which are available around 4-5 K. Googled, went through reviews, compared with others and then thought why not go with something more advanced, not any SLR but still something basic to start with... So search started again. And then stopped at Nikon L810. It has almost everything I expect (simply b'coz I don't know what to expect ). 16 Mp, 26x Optical zoom with 4x Digital zoom, CCD Image sensor and most importantly an affordable price.
Now my question is, is it worth the money? What all things I need to look after while buying camera? I searched and found that CCD sensors are better than CMOS ones. Is it true or there're some other and better types too? Out of all my requirements mentioned above, I think HD recording option is not available in Nikon L810 (a review mentioned that). Is there any other product which offers it with all other requirements (in the less/same price range)?

Edit: What shutter speed range should I look for if I want to capture a waterfall in best way? (silly que. isn't it? ) What is aperture?

Urgent reply is very much awaited as the decision and the purchase has to be done today/tomorrow.....

      Thanks in advance...!!!

Dude, first decide if you have a thing for learning photography or not?
if yes, get the canon sx160 . if you are not a big fan of manual controlls, get the nikon.
Quality wise both offer same levels of performance. you cant go wrong with either of these.I have just purchased the canon sx 160 only because of the manual controlls. it is a sure boon if you do intend to later move on to an slr cam but now dont have the budget or want to try a hand at manual cams...at 12x + zooms, you require a tripod. hands are just not stable enough.the manual controlls of canon allow you to take night shots with amazing clarity (you need to experiment with shutter speeds, apperture and iso, but you will love playing).attached is the link for the sample photographs that i took from my cam. i am a very novice person with cams. just learning to use it.

these pics would not have been possible in the nikon...If you are not a big fan of super zoom camera, you can skip the nikon cam and get the cannon SX160

BTW, thank you very much for reply. I thought it'll be very easy to buy a new camera. Just search on net, compare features, check prices and I'm done. Pretty streight process. But hell... It's completely messed up thing to understand if you're a newbie. Definitely, I want to move on to DLRs later and want to learn now. The thing you said about Nikon being (completely) auto-controlled. Is it true ? Ain't there any Nikon cam which allows manual control (in my expected price range i.e below 15 K) ? Also I completely agree that zooming above 12x requires a tripod. But I guess the model I mentioned (rather some more similar Nikon cams) have built-in VR (vibration reduction) system. Won't that be useful ?

Anyway, Canon sx160 is also a good option. Thanks...

I Was on the same lines as you before buying this camera. and was almost certain to buy the nikon but wheni saw what the manual mode could achieve, i decided on a cam with manual setting mode. currently, only cannon has this mode in low cost cameras.

                        • Guys not sure if this option has already been covered but you should seriously consider a GoPro Hero (motorsports edition).
I got one recently and it's brilliant! The various mounts, covers etc ensure that you can easily attach it to the handlebar/fuel tank etc. I have not yet been able to take it on a ride so can't comment on ease of use but the photo quality is pretty decent. I will not recommend that you use it while riding but it's much more convenient to use than a regular camera where you'd need to stop, probably take off your riding gloves, take out the camera etc.
Btw I must warn you that this would be a strictly outdoor use only camera, it's very bare bones and won't function as a normal point-and-shoot. More details here: GoPro Official Website: The World's Most Versatile Camera

I suggest you to buy a DSLR if you can, or any camera which gives you manual control as well.

                              As for the tips :

                              1) Keep Clicking If something is worth photographing, it's worth photographing twice(Out of the 300-500 pics you take only 30~50 will be good ones, if you take 20~30 pics only 2~3 will be worth the disk space)
                              2) Try taking the photo from a non-standard angle. That is to say, don't just stand there and take the picture from eye level. That's the point of view that everyone has anyway. It's not that interesting. Crouch down, stand on something, tilt the camera. Anything to take your photo from a perspective that's different than what people see everyday.
                              3) Composition is key, compose in your mind and eye before you compose in the lens(Try using Rule of Thirds & Golden Ratio)
                              4) TURN OFF YOUR POP UP FLASH(Learn how and when to use flash)
                              5) Fill the frame with your subject.
                              6) With a wide angle lens move closer to your subject(with a good wide angle lens you should be able to be able to keep <5cms distance and shoot)
                              7) Dont trust your onboard LCD display, when you view it on monitor then only you will come to know the flaws in your pic
                              8) Lastly, And don't read the internet too much. You'll read a million reasons your equipment is inadequate and how in order to do X you have to buy Y, which you can't afford, and how the camera you have has minor terrible flaws A, B, and C.All cameras have flaws. You can take great photos with the camera you have, no matter what it is.

Few good paid softwares : Lightroom, Photoshop
                              Open Source : GIMP,
                              torrentz(If you know what I mean )

                              • Hi

I have a Nikon 5100 with 18-55mm as the kit lens.
I am looking for a lens with better zoom capability. Confused whether to buy a light weight, faster 55-200mm or a heavy, slow focusing 55-300mm. The only advantage of 55-300mm is its higher zoom. Any suggestions?? Is 55-300mm worth the extra bucks??
