second would be dsc-730 (i own it, too much shutter-lag which is a sacrifice for excellent dimensions)

Thanks for the reply - i was wondering abt the MP also - Canon is 7.1 and Lumix is 8.1 MP - since lumix is equally good, wont the 1 MP difference make it even ??

1MPX wont make alot of difference, infact minimal if at all, mpx doesn't matter, i use a d40 too, its 6mpx and wayy better than my cybershot..
Battery-life, optical zoom, shutter lag and lens are all that matters and Canon excels in all these.
However i would recommend you to try all cameras if possible, if not go for Canon.

As for the price, the last I had enquired (quite sometime back), it was retailing there for about Rs.17k INR! Now, THAT's cheap for an SLR. But then again, do keep in mind that since there is no lens motor in the camera body, hence, non-AF-S lenses would need to be focussed manually! Simply put, autofocus just won't work with non AF-S lenses on the D40!

There is a reason for the cheap price, after all, you see.
went through the whole thread again and paid a little more attention to D40. does that price include any lense or just the body?
          I DONT GET ANGRY.
          I GET EVEN.

                • D40 comes with 'everything' required to start clicking straight out from box ...
I have not seen any deal of D40 body only being available ..

Reason D40 comes with a kit lens is as its an entry level DSLR and is targeted the newbies (as its the cheapest) ...

but u can do wonders with D40 after realising its power ! .. ..
Given a proper combo of lens and a proper setting , its no lesser than any 1k+ cam ..

Exactly...exchanged stock 18-50mm to sigma's 18-200mm and results are awesome.

                      • Can we have a thread where we share the info of how we carry our camera on a trip.

I had this small Panasonic DMC FX-01 and now upgraded to a Nikon D40. I had a cramster and never carried a back pack (hurts the back over long distances). I am in a big confusion while thinking of lugging it around. You all have pretty costly pieces of glass as well as the SLR compared to a total price of approx 19K i paid for both the camera and the kit lens.

So, if you could share how you take your photo gadgets out on a trip, it would be very useful.

                        @Mods,
Can we have a different thread for this please?

If you want to discuss it in a different thread, visit the following sister forum:

As for carrying such expensive piece of equipments while touring/ traveling, I carry it in a normal backpack, but will be buying a dedicated camera bag in the coming month.
                          :)

                          • any other Panasonic DMC-FZ50 users in the house? Its the most awesome camera I have owned even though the size means I can't carry it around everywhere.

                            • Guys please suggest me a Sub-20k DSLR with Minimum 10x Optical...

                              • A DSLR for below 20k is something hard to find...I think the entry level 400D itself is 35k for the body alone. If your looking for a digital camera with DSLR like functions I highly recommend mine the Panasonic DMC-Fz50, its old but good, google for reviews. The only downside for this camera is that it isn't so good at higher ISO's and tends to overcompensate on the noise reduction (but you can shoot in RAW mode to negate that).
