  • Yes , the nikon coolpix3100 is tiny and , and it is always with me in my sidebag , which is an absolute criterion for me . This is also why I haven't bought a Dslr yet ; I will buy one only when they make one in the total size of the olympus om1 or pentax ME . Even when I was using film , I seldom used to carry my canon T70 slr but either my Rollei35S or olympus XA compacts used to be with me all day everyday . The best camera in the world is the one that is with you when you need it . Cameras kept back at home can't make any photographs , no matter how many advanced features they may have .

Either you will never buy a DSLR or you shall end up buying a EVIL camera!!!

BTW, some of the EVIL cameras have a form factor which is way smaller (&lighter) than the OM1 or the ME!!!

Hello long lost brother . Long time no see .

Anyways I checked out both of those cameras.. Bet let me assure you.. They won't even be able to hold a candle to the new Ixus HS series from Canon (which Sachin God is endorsing these days). Buy any one which fits your budget.. even the most budget model (which I bought like 2 hours ago for 7k) has exceptionally better picture quality as compared to any competitor. Dont believe me? Do some pixel peeping yourself and compare results. There is one for every budget. (Yours I guess is somewhere around 15k)

Dont chase the megapixel count or the screen size(or other such gimmicks like compass, GPS or WiFi..). What you buy a camera for is picture quality.. If you want a Geotagged picture, use your phone . Anyways.. anything over 10Mpix is more than enough.

Try the Canon Ixus 300HS.. It has a similar price and feature set to the Sony WX7.. only with much better low light performance, and much better pictures(with true colours rather than the oversaturated colours on the Sony) and minus the GPS / Compass gimmicks.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Maybe right .. No dslr for me ever .. I need a compact with 1) single focus lens of around 40mm ( 35mm equivalent ) of around f2 max aperture 2) ability to focus manually by hand if necessary 3) always-extended lens ready to take pics just as soon as the cap is opened 4) zero shutter lag 5) 10mp minimum 6) dynamic range same as colour negative film 7) no software correction , raw mode 8) flash off switch on body 9) weatherproof 10) lens equal image in viewfinder or display ......etc etc
Yes , I stii have both the Rollei35S ( black 40mm f2.8 sonnar singapore made ) with it's original tiny 100XL rollei flash and coated Rollei germany 00 UV filter & the olympus XA ( 35mm f2.8 rangefinder ) with it's flash , in perfect conditions , mothballed now for lack of use in a tupperware with some silica-gel . If you do have to buy a film camera at this age ... get a Rollei35 tessar or sonnar . The 40mm sonnar 2.8 is a remarkably different lens than any I had on any camera ever ... not just fabulously sharp or contrasty .. but the rollei photographs have a magical quality that is un-definable . I'll try to post a pic of each cam for you soon .

                • @Rony: Check out mediahome.in for Hoya filters. He has got original filters. I myself have bought from him and he is cheaper than some of the other shops here in Mumbai, which do sell original filters.

If you buying, go for the Circular Polarizer and the ND filter, which comes handy when shooting moving water bodies. UV filter is useful as a protection tool which I am using currently.

Thanks for the info bro ... I now have the Hoya HMC filter and later will buy CP & ND filters too ... but first I need a sturdy & light weight tripod .. any pointers for that?

                          • Be careful with that Hoya (HMC) !! the HMC coated hoyas are a dog to clean once you get an fingerprint etc on it . Do never try to clean it during use , you'll surely scratch it . Do not use anything but soft old well laundered pure cotton cloth or a genuine cotton microfibre to clean it gently . After I found out this characteristic trait of the HMC hoyas the hard way , I never bought one again .... preferring the standard HOYAs ( single coated ) which costs less .
In tripods ,the words lightweight , sturdy and stable do not mix . The lightweights are never very stable , wobble and wears out quickly .. better to practise hand-holding techniques than bother with carrying one like that . Be careful not to buy a tripod designed for handycams , get a still camera one only . Try to get a Manfrotto or a Leitz Tiltall , even if second-hand , they'll outlast you .

                            • Okay, you are not going to buy any other Digital camera anytime soon. You are better off with your existing digital camera and the Rollei!!!

These are the specs which every photography enthusiast have been waiting for(including your truly!!!).

If you are really serious, you should see on which specs you can compromise! Right now only two cameras come to my mind:
                              1. Canon S90.
                              2. Panasonic LX3.

If you are willing to spend some more dough, you can think about Olympus XZ1.

                              • S90 is cheaper now at 18k, though S95 is at 24k.

Olympus XZ1 has good lens and usable zoom range. The talk-of-the-town feature is F2.8 at the tele end (105 i guess). JEPG rendering is excellent on XZ1.
