This is what I need some of your views/Suggestions for..

I'm basically looking for an entry-level DSLR, costing under 30k.

I would use the SLR for these photography styles:
      * LANDSCAPE
      *MACRO-"SLR compatible with MACRO lens."
      *TRAVEL/OUTDOOR

Please pour in your valuable suggestions/Opinions
Looking forward to buy, by this month end or next month.
I was in a similar mindset a year back... I didn't want to waste another bag of coins since I didn't know how much I will get into photography. So I went in for a cheapest available DSLR (Canon 1000D) wit kit lens (18-55 mm). I got some good response and appreciation for my clicks so soon I got the nifty fifty(1.8 50 mm fixed focal) and a 55-250 to increase my aperture and focal range and a Tripod for night/steady shots. Even-though I always had an eye on the 550D (first impression) I feel very comfortable with my current kit. Lac of spot metering and inability to take video didn't mind me much for now.

      Suggestion:
Choose a Brand between Nikon/Canon - you have d best set/availability of lens line-ups.If you have budget constraint invest less on body and have bandwidth for better lenses and other accessories like flash, tripod etc.

Landscape - The 18mm focal of the kit lens is good enough for this. Wide-angle lenses are expensive and produces noticeable distortion. though wide-angles can be used by a novice, you need to learn/practice on angles to get best results for the investment.

Macro- You might get confused by the macro labels on the cheaper telephoto lenses from Tamron/Tokina brands but for a real/best macro shot you need a dedicated the macro lens which is again expensive. You can buy it anytime you have the bandwidth.

Travel/Outdoor - There is no better DSLR than a P&S for compactness for travel especially when you want to travel light.

Rough cost of my kit is 49250 where actually planned to spend under 25K
      Canon 1000D with kit lens(with IS) - INR 24000
      Canon 55-250 mm - INR 10500
      Canon 50mm 1.8 - INR 5500
      Sunpack Flash - INR 6000
      Decent tripod - 2500
      Lens filters - 250*3 = 750

PS: When I am in a good mood to try photography, I use my old Canon A540 in manual mode which gives me some challenge to take a shot as I wanted.

PS2: Please think before investing money on DSLR. If you don't find time after getting all the expensive stuffs you might repent. A P&S with manual exposure,TV & AV mode is enough to try photography. The most expensive and essential investment is time, Better have that

      • which camera

        hello everyone...
im thinking of buying a new camera and im confused between nikon D3100 and D5100... i have the following questions...
is it ok to spend 10k more and go for the D5100 or would it be wise to buy the D3100 and use the remaining extra money to buy a 55-200mm lens...
also the D5100 has a display which can be moved in any direction.. is it reliable... as i had a sony handycam previously and its movable display gave problems quite frequently... pls give your opinions...
        thanks..

        • What photography gear do you own?

i believe photography and biking go hand in hand, the more you travel, the better subjects you get.

so what gear do you peole own? i am sure people here must have some high quality bodies and lenses..

to start off, i own a Canon EOS 550D with an 18-55 kit lens and simpex tripod.

totally depends on the budget.. d3100 does everything that d5100 does, only the expert will be able to tell the diffence between pics taken by the two..

in the end its never about the gear, its about the guy behind it!

even when i wanted to buy a dslr my first choice was d5100 but the store guy was not very positive about the swivel screen and its reliability..

i was asking this for one of my friend.. he has now purchased the D3100 along with the 55-200mm lens..

and "in the end its never about the gear, its about the guy behind it!" loved the line..
