the reviewers are saying that mainly DIGIC 4 along with the boosted MP is not making 50D standing out speaking loud.u can check DPREVIEW.but look at the cons in their conclusion page.
Canon EOS 50D Review: 31. Conclusion: Digital Photography Review

they write..L lenses required to get stuff out of camera.ISO worse than 40D.main is reduced dynamic range compared to 40D again.in short DIGIC 4 and heavy MP not going together.better will be to get 40D and invest and invest on lenses.
    there are no stupid questions.

+1. Exactly my thoughts. Two main advantages of the 50D has over the 40D are AF fine tuning and the LCD display. I don't give much importance to the pixel count.

40D + a good prime makes more sense to me.

        +2
        go for the 40D
is practically the same cameras externally as the 50D, with all the same functions, same autofocus, and the same framerate.

the 15megapixels turned out to be a wee bit too much for the smaller APS-C frame and thus the 50D suffers in terms of the per pixel quality and ISO performance (ISO only slightly)

One thing to take note is that while both have a 3 inch screen, the 50D's is the 640.480 pixel one compared to the 320.240 one of the 40D. though that should not become too much of a deal breaker IMO

compared to the 450, there will be a significant difference compared in the autofocus performance and the dynamic range. And the framerate too - that 6.3 actual compared to the 3.5 of the 450 will net you the perfect moments quite often when shooting fast action. See any perfect sports freeze frame and you'll understand why they yearn for the 1D MarkIII running at 10fps, or the D3 at 9. And do not fret about the "only" 10 megapixels. we all know that not all pixels are created equal.

go for the 40D, and with the money you save compared to the 50D, get a nice prime in the focal length range that you utilise a lot - or maybe contribute that money to the savings account that I am sure you have somwhere for more L glass.

If you want to do that all with one camera, then you better look out for a digital camera!
yeah i do know that the lenses are mostly very specific.....but id mostly be taking pictures of scenery and a few macro shots here and there.....and i thought instead of getting the camera with the kit lens it would be better to buy the body seperately and get a decently priced lens that would be better than the kit lens....

that is honestly the way to go for building a DSLR kit.

get a good GP lens like the EF-S 17-85 IS if ya want reach, or the AWESOME EF-S 17-55/2.8 IS if ya want the best quality 18-55 lens that would be good for action with the fast 2.8 aperture *fastest available on zoom lenses*

if ya want an all purpose lens, the 18-200 IS from canon is also decent, though the image quality is not up there with the two mentioned above i guess.

for telephotos, the 55-200 EF-S should complement the 18-55 or even the 17-85 pretty darn well. the 70-300 IS should will give ya GREAT reach on the 1.6x crop bodies like the 450 or the 1000

btw, these posts should be in the other digital cameras thread. mods, if ya would do the honors
