^ what i meant was, 32 bit OS is 2^32 data processing ie 4GB memory. so thats the max it can use ideally. applied to vista, xp, linux... all.
but you can hack the shell for using 64bit processing using PAE kernel set.
so if you use 64bit OS then upgrading memory makes sense. you need 64bitOS.

In case you are going for Vista 32 don't go for 4 GB of RAM.Vista wont be able to use all of it and you will lose about 642 MB.Instead you can go for 3GB in the following configuration.
      2 x 1 GB and 2 x 512 MB DIMMs.
      Here's an article explaining it:
Coding Horror: Dude, Where's My 4 Gigabytes of RAM?

Install it in the following way:
1.The RAM slots in your mobo will be having 4 slots in pair of two, each pair will be of different color.Let's say green and blue.
2.Put the 2 modules of 1gb in the green slots.
3.Put the 512 modules in the other two slots.

Tadaaa.....you now have three gb running in dual channel.
Of course you can go for Vista 64 if you plan to use 4 gb.The driver support is all right if your PC's components are of reputed brands.

That is the theoretical mem you can have.In practice, the max memory is something significantly less, equal to 4GB minus your video card memory and the address space allocated to a couple of other hardware resources. Typically, the realistic max mem is somewhere betwee 2.5GB and 3.5GB.

If you'd like to go above 3 GB , then it would be better if you get a 64 bit OS.

^ hmm... i was just trying to put it a bit simpler coz i saw primary/sec mem slots referred to as green/blue. Peace !

btw... anybody tried ReadyBoost? my laptop has 2GB mem and running vista. tried connecting 4GB USB, formatted with NTFS and gave bout 3.6G for ReadyBoost and then i ran the Witcher game.
i found the game rather slower than without! i mean, the initial buffering is pretty slow and takes double the time. But while running the game, i think there is a tiny weeny speed improvement.

              and anybody has USB3.0?

                @anvancy,
Follow these steps to configure your PC :

Right click on My network places-->right click on Local area network icon-->properties-->internet protocol(tcp/ip)-->click on ip address and assign an IP (like 192.168.0.5, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0)

Repeat the same process with laptop but put different IP address like one 192.168.0.5 and other 192.168.0.6; let subnet mask will remain same.

Then type this command to check connectivity---

                ping (other pc/laptop IP address)
                e.g.

                ping 192.168.0.6

and it should read something like this ...
Pinging 192.168.0.6 with 32 bytes of data:

                Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
                Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Try it out and lemme know!

btw, tried Far Cry2 benchmarker yet??

Like if I have a 2 GB RAM using single RAM of 2GB is better or using combinations of RAM is better like 2 X 1 GB or something like this.

                    NVIDIA DEFECTIVE GPUs

                    Hi all..

For those using a HP Pavilion Laptop.. There are many defective Nvidia Chipsets which had come along with those laptops..

In my case, i use a HP Pavilion dv9601AU with
                    NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M
Problem with my chipset is that the display hangs when ever i play a movie / high resolution game.

I contacted the HP Support and was told that most of the graphic card's has some problem and would be replaced free of cost (under warranty).

So, for those facing similar issues - call HP Support -
                    1800112267, 30306363, 011 26388000 or visit a service showroom ASAP.
Report the same in HP's Business Support Forums

Also, kindly check the warranty - in my case i bought my laptop in April 2008 and is recorded as November 2007 in their records - So i should go back and blast them till they change the same

2x1 GB RAM is the better option since it will run in Dual channel mode.
However with the way current hardware is progressing you wont notice the difference.A single 2 GB can post almost the same performance.

                        • also having 2x1 gb ram is better because if one of your ram chip messes-up at lest you can still work with the other 1 gb chip...
