  • Survey on Auto Magazine readership

Once upon a time (3-4 years back) I used to buy each and every issue of a couple of auto magazines without fail.

I wonder if things are same with our online xBhp friends.

How often do you buy/read auto magazines these days?

Here is a small survery to find that out

How often do you buy Auto Magazines?

    1. I regularly buy some auto magazine every month

    2. I sometime buy some auto magazine. But its not a regular habit

    3. I get most of the stuff online. I rarely buy auto magazines these days

Note: Kindly also vote on the Poll posted above

    Topic Moved and Approved.

I have moved this topic out of the 'List and Surveys' section as each post under that section needs moderation, which, for a topic like this is not really required, I feel.

Anyhow, now coming to the topic at hand, I generally pick up issues after having a look at the contents of it online (generally on the related mag's website). If I find the content to be really exciting, only then do I splurge the money on actually getting a hard copy.
    :)

I'd rather spend money on mods rather than auto mags. These days, most stuffs are available on the net.

I Buy an issue of two Mags named Bike India and Overdrive every month. I have archived each and every issue of overdrive since Feb 2000. But i never lost interest in Auto mags once i read them.

You may call me old school but NOTHING beats reading a magazine no matter how much of stuff is available on the net. Just the feel of seeing a magazine cover, picking it up, looking at the contents page, going to the page, sitting down and reading a rivetting article is an experience in itself! The feel of turning the page, looking at the article, relating to the photographs, nothing beats this experience. If I have cash in my pocket and I happen to chance upon a good article in a mag, I do not hesitate one moment to pick it up! But of course, it has to be quality stuff.

Most of the things are already on xBhp!, before they get into mag's. Then, what's the need to buy a printed version.

            P.S: I have gone with 3rd option.

I am sure that you noticed that xBhp has Two-wheelers only! Here we are talking about Auto Mags in general.

Yes, but I hardly have to come across with 4-wheelers; and this makes my TARGET, as of only, '2-wheelers.'

Same here, how much can one keep gazing at the Monitor screen?

Flipping the page with the morning coffee/while waiting for someone/going through it while you are in sleep-mode can't be achieved by on-line stuff though there are may be one to max two magazines which i buy without checking and rest, i go through the contents and if I know the writer is unbiased, then pick up one.

well i have a different opinion here.
i was a very regular buyer of a particular magazine.
i used to buy it 5-10 days in advance than the month end as a supplier used to save a copy for me.
but after a year long read and collection I've stopped reading it.

                    the reason..
you get to hear good things about every vehicle which is newly launched..
every report is very good and diplomatic which contradicts the truth. that's what i feel
even mags can't help it as they get paid for the review..
and sometimes i am very unsatisfied with some reports..
and i expect things to be very detailed in mags but its not, can't blame the mags again as they target every reader...

so after all this I've stopped and keep an eye on ownership thread of the bike that i am interested upon.
nothing can give a convincing report that the owner who has spent a lot of time, efforts and money to buy it..
i like to hear from them only.
Giving a lot to a fiero.
Expecting a lot from a fiero.

I stated buying mags only for the cafe. Else every bit of news can be found online.(blogs and forums)

mostly i use the net for all the info. I rarely buy a magazine unless i am ravelling in a train or something else. While traveling it helps in reducing my boredom.

Well I think I started buying magazines when I was 10. (In Fifth Grade).
Auto India was the only magazine I guess at that time. I had subscribed it.
Then switched to Overdrive. Again Subscription. When in college I made sure to buy Overdrive every month. Then I went to Pune due to shortage of cash and magazines becoming so expensive I used to buy 1 magazine in a couple of months.

After I started working, 3 magazines every month. Overdrive, Auto Car and Bike India. I just love owning these magazines.

well i religiously buy 3 to 4 major auto magazines every month, depending on the articles that interest me. As some guys mentioned, there is a certain charm to reading magazines. Having said that nowadays i find almost all the magazines are similar i.e. same articles, so finding one which differentiates itself with more detailed and unbiased analysis is missing. Also the cost just keeps increasing, so thats another dampner

I also have a good collection from 1999 onwards. Due to space constraints, weed out old magazines every 2-3 years which do not have much to preserve; and cutting out interesting articles/ test reports for record.

Though I have some complaints against these magazines especially those known for 2-wheeler testing like they don't give, any more, info. on Carb venturi size, speed per gear/@ 1000 rpm, ignition timing and advance, (What this 'F' written routinely stands for - is it 'F@$#%k' or what) and the kms. done before the performance tests. I think the manufacturers are not cooperating with them anymore. So, now buy them only if an issue seems to be interesting one only.
