  • Changing Backlight Colour of Speedometer Console: Pulsar 200NS

    Greetings to all,

    I know lot of guys were waiting for this. As we all know, the Bajaj Pulsar 200NS has been the path breaking motorcycle in its segment. Among all the sharp cues of 200NS, I feel, the cockpit has been designed most conservatively of all the other design elements.

    Yet, the bang on Tachometer and the side mounted Speedometer looks really good. However I find the Yellow backlight of the 200NS to be tad boring.
    Previously I had changed the backlight of my Pulsar 220 to blue and this time around I wanted something with more oomph. And with my Yellow Bumblebee, the RED was the best option.

    BTW this might well be the most elaborated DIY post!

    Total Cost, excluding the tools: 150/- (including solder, flux and LED)

    So, before we start a few pointers:
    1. In terms of electronic modifications, this is one belongs to advance stage.
    2. In mod is completely reversible however official it will void the warranty of the bike.
    3. The procedure mentioned here is quiet simple, and anybody with hand at soldering /de-soldering can do it, provided he or she has oodles of patience.
    4. However any mistake or over heating the soldering point can render the whole unit non-working.



    Let’s Get Started!

    Tools Required.
    1. Allen Key Size – 6 mm
    2. Screw Driver with Philips head and Spanner Size - 8/9
    3. Soldering Iron with Fine Tip, De-soldering Wick and Pump, Solder and Flux, Wires and LED strip, Insulation Tape, Tweezers, wire and wire stripper.












    Step 1

    Locate these allen bolts on either side of Headlamp fairing, and remove (2x2) 4 Bolts.






    Step 2

    Removing the allen bolts, unplug all the male/female connectors, and then put the faring in your work place and marvel at the design cues for sometime






    Step 3

    Locate the 2 No.s small allen bolts on either side of the wind screen and remove them.






    Step 4

    Once the front windscreen bolts are removed, pull the windscreen out. The lower part of the windscreen is attached to the fairing with rubber plugs, so will require some extra effort.





    Step 5

    Remove these 4 allen bolts, next to the console and remove the plastic fairing.





    Step 6

    This is how the console will look after removing the fairing.





    Step 7 / 8
    Locate these 3 nuts underneath the console and unscrew them with spanner. It might tricky due to limited space.



    and






    Step 9
    Get the speedometer console out of the headlamp assembly and set it aside. Remove these 5 screws with the help of Philips head screwdriver.





    Step 10

    Simply pull out the faceplate, plastic ring around the Tachometer and the tachometer needle. There might be some fevicol like substance holding them, just remove them with screwdriver.





    Step 11

    Once the face plate is removed, locate 3 screws on the console front and remove them. This will remove the main unit from the plastic case.





    Step 12

    Turn the unit, and locate these points on the PCB. These points are required to be de-soldered.






    Step 13

    This is the most critical step of all – the de-soldering. Carefully desolder the points with the help of de-soldering pump and wick. You can apply some flux, but be careful not to overheat the points. Carefully remove the LCD along with the plastic panel from the main PCB.





    Step 14

    This is how the bare PCB will look. Cover the original SMD LEDs with black insulation tape.





    Step 15

    Stick the LED strips of your preferred colour. Connect them to a 12V power and check if everything is working fine. Even if the strips and wire are a bit protruding, it won’t have any issues.





    Step 16
    Temporarily put the faceplate back, and check if the backlight is looking fine. Incase if it’s not readjust the LED strips.





    Step 17

    This is how finally the PCB will look before putting everything back in place. I have used a rolling paper to evenly spread the LED beam pattern. One can use butter paper in place, just that the decreased distance of LEDs from the LCD should not light up as dots.






    Step 18
    Solder the positive and negative terminals of the LED to the indicated points on PCB.



    Step 19
    Put everything back and enjoy the cockpit view!










    One important note: With this mod, the LED's won't glow during self check.

    Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

      the moment i saw this thread, i knew, it could only be you...
      a few things-
      • the sentence in the 4th point is left incomplete, "can render the....", although the meaning is conveyed, if possible correct it.
      • one thing to note is the speedometer console is openable, unlike older pulsars where it is a sealed unit and we have cut it open and then glue it back to carry similar mod.
      • there are still some dots, or bright and dark areas on LCD screen, any way to further smoothen the light output.
      • one suggestion, if you are not very good at soldering or if you fear that after prolonged use and taking all the potholes and jerks, some soldering may come loose-- you can apply some araldite over soldering joints to make sure they will never come loose. just a tip.
      • and rahul, you have not removed old LED's just covered them and put additional ones, won't it increase the electrical load on the electronic ckt. how long will it handle it. another way can be take those two wires out and connect somewhere else like --to pilot lamps

        In my humble opinion
        • Covering Stock Leds are not optimal
          -Power is drawn from two LED's,Which is not efficent
        • I would rather de-solder the stock LED's and replace/ resolder with Similar [Red]SMD leds


        Really appreciate your efforts for dismantling, putting it all back together and posting a very detailed DIY!!

          very very nice D.I.Y bro

          I want to install white l.e.d in my pulsar 150 2005 ug2's analog meter console but i think the old analog incandescent Back lighted faceplates are more thicker & dark than l.e.d Back lighted new faceplates
          can i use the same l.e.ds as you used in your pulsar ? please help me
          In your last picture there is upper left side of your tachometer is there a digital clock or what is it ? & please give me information about it is it stock or costom ?

              I think it is very much easy for you as you just need to remove the old bulbs & put smd led bulbs . Just check for the correct socket type ( for passion it is T10 ) if its same for your pulsar then get them from local automobile shops & replace . Also one thing if your stock bulbs are on AC then you need to change supply to DC .

                2. I'm not sure, which Pulsar you are referring, but all LCD consoles of Pulsars are very easy to open, no sticking business as such.
                3. Actually, the backlight is evenly spread to the naked eye, its only on camera that they are visible. Moreover we can use thicker sheets of butter paper to smooth-en out the light.
                4. I don't think that the soldering joint can become loose. Moerover, epoxy glue will make it permanent. Where as in this case the mod is completely reversible.
                5. The extra LED's hardly consume any power. And those 2 soldering point provide, full amp, constant 12V, so no issues. Though you can connect them separately as well, to say pilot lamps.

                I did try removing the LED's in my previous 220, and it was almost impossible to do it without damaging the tiny SMD LEDs. Also, this insures that the mod is completely reversible, just in case.

                If i'm not wrong, the old Pulsar make use of wedge shape, bulb inside the speedometer console. I would suggest you buy off the shelf LEDs for common pilot bulb replacement and install them. Though, AC current on your old pulsar will a problem with the LEDs. PM me in case you require more help on this.

                  l.e.d. in analog meter (old pulsar)

                  thnx to rahul
                  in old pulsar's analog meter there is push type bulbs like in all pulsar's pilot lamps
                  previously i used l.e.d in meter but it dose't glow as brighter as your l.e.d
                  there is picture of i used l.e.d it runs on a.c & there is no problem of ac/dc
                  can i use your type of l.e.d strip ? is it work on a.c ?

                  In your last picture there is upper left side of your tachometer is there a digital clock or what is it ? & please give me information about it
                  is it stock or costom ?

                    Actually, those are older LED's we used get for Pilot bulbs in wedge type socket. However these days you get the SMD LED array type of wedge type LED lamps, which very bright and last long. I'm attaching the picture. These are easily available on Ebay.in or even at local shops.

                    Ofcourse you can make use of these LED strips, they also come with resistance required for 12V. But it would be much easier to do with the ready made LEDs.

                    And that's digital display is Voltmeter. Displaying the current voltage at the battery terminals.
