  • DIY Hazard Light/Parking Light

All through the monsoon, riding in the heavy downpour I used to notice all the big fat 4 wheelers turning on all 4 blinkers (parking lights) for higher visibility. It never lured me earlier but this mansoon it did, may be because my commute involved major highways & I noticed higher number of 4 wheelers.

This is an additional safety feature and IMO it should be made standard on the motorcycle as well. Nevertheless, it is a pretty simple mod and can be done in 2 simple ways. One requires 2 switch (1 default indicator switch & 1 toggle switch) operation while the other needs only single switch (toggle switch).
I went with the later method which needs only one toggle switch.

    Difficulty: Easy

We need to connect 3 wires to the toggle switch, each one +ve from right & left indicator and the 3rd one is the neutral or from flasher unit. Refer the diagram. Use heat shrink tubing to insulate the bare leads of the diodes. If possible put all the wires in the bigger heat shrink tube this will ensure the factory finish.
I had an old front brake light switch cable which fitted perfectly on the toggle switch. It had a rubber cover as well which made the switch look neater.

I decided to install the switch on the left hand side, in the mirror mounting bracket. Taken the measurements accordingly & got the clamp fabricated out of a sheet metal piece from a local workshop. I have stuck carbon fiber sticker on the clamp to make it look more professionally done.
Install the clamp in position and install the switch on the clamp.

Connect the upper end of the wire to the switch. Locate the indicator socket in the cable harness. For FZ it is under the left side tank panel. Find out the left & right indicator wires (for FZ green & brown wire) and the wire from flasher (for FZ brown with white strip). As I did not want to cut any of the stock wire, I fitted the male jumper wires at the end of each wire. Insert these wires in the respective position in the socket. Turn the key, push the button & enjoy all the 4 blinkers flashing together.

          Re: DIY Hazard Light/Parking Light

Today I tried to do this DIY on my honda unicorn, but unsuccessful.

When I removed the head Light fairing, I saw different colors of wires. In which left side indicator had two wires Orange & Green

In right indicator had Light Blue & light green color. And their where three wires coming from head light Dark Blue, white, black.

All the above 5 wires got into one connector, so i got confused to go with which wire, can anyone guide me for proper wires here.

If you could, please open the left switch assembly see the colors of 3 wires that are connected to indicator switch and then follow above steps.

This post may be a little late, but the most commonly used colour coding in motorcycle lighting is as follows:

              Green - Ground
Orange - Left indicator power (front and back) - Provide 12V here to turn on left indicator
Light Blue - Right indicator power (front and back) - Provide 12V here to turn on right indicator
Dark blue - High beam - Provide 12V here to turn on high beam
White - Low beam - Provide 12V here to turn on low beam
Brown - Position/Pilot lamp - Provide 12V supply here to turn on pilot lamp
Black - 12V supply through key - This line will provide you with 12V supply when ignition key is turned on (even with engine off)

              Also:
Red - 12V supply direct - This line will provide you with 12V supply directly from battery with ignition key in on or off position - good for follow me home style lamps
Yellow (if applicable) - 12V supply from Rectifier - This line will provide 12V supply only when engine is running

I can confirm the above for Honda and Hero models.

                Re: DIY Hazard Light/Parking Light

                Hi. Well Done.

I have also done this on my 220F. But I simply short the right beam +ive and Left Beam +ive with a toggle switch to revert to stock. Only two wires needed instead of three. Also no need for diode in this setup. I activate it by switching toggle switch ON and turning on either left or right indicator.
                Works abolutely fine.

                Regards.

                  Re: DIY Hazard Light/Parking Light

Really superb lights. Plan to do this on my Hero Honda Super Splendor. The companies should take this inputs and imbibe the hazard lights as a feature in all bikes / scooters.

Might be they will incorporate. Cars had the pass light since long time, but now bikes too have it. Dont know how much this gonna cost the company to put a simple circuit and a switch for the hazard light.

Might be you can send this suggestion to companies to see if they can include such feature in future version of motorcycles.

Great DIY job. I'm instantly inspired to take this up by myself. Any idea where the indicator socket for the CBR 150R is located?

Not sure but must be under fairing. Just open and track the cable.

Yes you can install on any two wheeler.
The beauty of this setup (Use of Diodes) is that it doesn't affect your normal indicator function plus you get single switch parking light.
With this setup you can even come back to stock easily as there is no cut in the wiring or no modification to the switch unit.

There is another way of making parking light (2 switch option) where you have to operate normal indicator switch and an extra toggle switch which connects L & R indicator wires thus making all the blinkers flash together.

I have made this & is working perfectly.
But the buzzer makes beeps on using this hazard lights. I want the hazard lights to flash without sound, with sound only when using side indicators.
