  • DIY : Helmet Painting

    Hello All,
I took one stab at painting my own helmet and it came out alright according to me, but I think it could have been better with a little practise. My lid a vemar Boomerang had a lot of scratches on it over the time and use, so wanted to make it look new my way, besides also wanted something custom. The designs are my own with a little inspiration from other lids available. The paints used were spray cans available in the market. I could post a step by step procedure if anyone's interested. Do let me know what u think. Ciao!

PS: Others Could use this thread to post their custom lids aswell.

    Universal Thread Approved.

@ripper: It would be beneficial if you can post a step by step guide to what you did, and the final product as well.

good artwork, though you should have googled the logo and later traced it ofsome of the logos-

You could have taken it to the person who can trace it out and get it cut on the radium with the plotter
foreg-i have a lenovo lappy.Downloaded the logo and got it traced with a plotter.

Ps1-the guy at chincholi bunder won't do this.I get it done from asian motors, kandiwali west.
Ps2-I will be rebuilding my ki ho marvel this summer.Right now collecting as much parts as possible.

@sumit: Thanks bro, to tell you frankly i was expecting this question from guys here on the first page itself, but anyways better late then never. I did a lot of research on the net etc etc. Saw so many lids so many designs, so many DIY jobs carried out which actually tempted me to do what i did. I know im compromising safety to some extent but not the whole of it. I have read some articles which said that pasting stickers do hamper the REAL working of the lid. That was when i started out i too didnt want any radium or graphics etc on my lid, just the logos and that was it. But felt it looked plain after i finished and that was when i added the stars and the radium stripes on it. And yes theres a lot of info available off the net and this topic had been discussed long before here before the server crash, there is a lot that goes in the making of the lid and i very well know that. Point taken bro!

^^^ I am also curious to know the answer to this question. But yeah searching over the net I could get only mixed statements whether one can put custom stickers, paint job on the helmet or not.
Anyways will have to find a manufacturer who can tell the exact answer

Couple of links I found over the net which many of us might have also seen:
John Wakefield the Managing director of Phoenix distribution, the leading importers of Arai helmets into the UK explains if you can put stickers onto your he...

So the thread is pretty much the question. I have heard from some people that putting stickers, or painting( was thinking light airbrush work) damages...

@sumit. pannalall: Ill answer that for you. Custom stickers hamper the safety of the lid and should not be applied all over the lid in a continuous way, like the graphics done on OEM lids coz on the OEM lids its a very thin film that is stuck on. The Vinyls are much thicker in Comparison to them. A custom paint job is permissible provided you scrape down the previous coat of paint completely, this is what i have been able to reason out from the various forums/groups ive been through. Hope that helps.

Hi ! my DIY painted helmet

Guys this was my first attempt at DIY painting.though it didnt come out that good as i made a few mistakes .i decided to do the graphics with the spray can itself so it took a lot of time and finally i ran out of patience.a few things i learned from it:

                  1) sand the surface as smooth as possible even a small imperfection here would ruin your final product.that's very important

                  2) always use high quality FLEXIBLE masking tape (or a fine line masking tape ) for graphics. i used a 10 rupee masking tape which was good on flat surface but on a curved surface it gave small bubbles which lead to overspray at few places.

                  3) before clear coating clean the whole helmet with a thinner to take off any left behind adhesives from the tape or else when you use the helmet in the sun for long the adhesive will liquify and spread and alter the colour and there is nothing you can do about it.

                  4) dont spray lacquer based paints over enamel based paints.

                  5) wait for the paint to dry fully before masking.be prepared to show a lot of patience and it does take a lot of your time .

                  here's my painted helmet:

Custom painted CROSS helmet. Step by step process.

Hi all, I got my helmet custom painted with my bike. I already posted the pics of my Bike and Helmet on a new thread few days ago.
Just now, I gone through this thread and decided to post my lid's painitng process here. I think it might be helpful for amateurs like me. This is our first ever custom paint job. All we had was a very good designer and a painter with some patience (his painting doesn't have good finish).

I bought a CROSS's Cruze helmet from Cochin while my bike was undergoing some modifications and mechanical works. I chose a simple black helmet with minimal graphics because we were about to repaint it. Even though Cross has some pretty good graphic schemes on the same model. I bought it for Rs.1950.

My designer (Gautham Suresh capt. Street Lordz atunt team, Kerala) made an awesome design for my lid. But the painter had no idea for how to make it real. Then, me and my 2 friends decided to make it real.

                      1. The design was made in photoshop

                      2. we redraw it with Coreldraw for making the stickers.

                      3. Made the stickers on a non reflective green sticker material since it can be removed very easily.

                      4. sanded the stock helmet.

                      3. removed inner paddings, cheek pads and visor.

                      4. covered all the air vents and black rubber beedings with masking tape.

                      5. applied primer.

                      6. a white base coat of paint has been made,

                      7. 2 layers of Green paint was applied.

                      8. Now, we pasted the stickers on both side of the helmet. Since the design had very small objects we struggled a lot on this stage, we never had previous experience on none of these stuffs. . Somehow we placed the stickers on correct places. It took almost 2-3 hours for us.

                      9. Now, we have to paint a black layer over these stickers, the main problem was, we did not had an air brush. What we had was a normal sized spray gun, which the painter used to paint on driving school's truckers and auto rikshaws. We asked him to set the pressure on lowest possible level. and he applied the black paint as we said. we needed a gradient like finish on the edges of the stickers. he made it for us.

                      10. Then came the next painstaking work. removing the stickers. This has to be done with very much care and precision. We were using a blade to remove the stickers. If anything goes wrong the whole work will be gone. Also we didn't had spare paint left with us. But this process was much easier than we expected. We removed it in 20 mins without any problem. Voila!! we done it!!.. . we were all happy because, we were experimenting on this.

                      11. Next we applied 2 layers of clear coat.

                      and the Helmet is finished.

Check out the different stages of paint job.

We used the same method for painting our second work. The Street Monster AGV.

We are using the same stickers which everyone uses for sticker jobs. Available at license plate printing shops. We used non refelective type green. It is cheap and it can be removed easily (not from matte paint surface though).

                            Re: DIY : Helmet Painting

                            Hey Guys,

So I recently bought a new helmet - SOL68SII and I got it in matt black finish. This was primarily with a view of getting my own sticker job done.

My chief inspiration is a James Hunt original helmet as seen here

In addition, I also looked at Kimi Raikkonen's tribute to James Hunt that he wore at last year's Monaco GP seen here

And to this I have added a couple of elements like the Sparta Logo from Jorge Lorenzo's helmet and a funny hippo graphic I found off the net.

Anyways, I haven't gotten down to the actual sticker itself and wanted feedback from you guys on this prototype. This is just my handiwork and therefore is very primitive. I did it only to help me visualize the design. I'm open to suggestions and changes and would like to know what you guys think.

AFTER DRYING IT SPRAY THE GREAY PRIMER SINGLE COAT AT ITS JUST FOR GIVING A BASE...
ONCE GREY DRIES UP, USE THE
MAIN COLOUR, I USED BLACK... LET IT DRY AND THEN APPLY A SECOND COAT...
THE I USED THE BLUE COLOUR FOR THE STRIP... TWO COATS..

WHILE USING THE SPRAY PAINT CANS KEEP A DISTANCE OF ATLEAST 6-7 INCHES FROM THE OBJECT(HELMET) AS THEY CONTAIN THINER,
                              SO IT DRIPS A LOT..
DO NOT SPRAY LACQUER ON REFLECTIVE STICKER..
