    ::Re-Using Old {used} Engine Oil::

    Guys am using the old engine oil for the following purpose, i dont know is it wise or not but it serves my purpose
    i used to filter it with a cloth and use it for below purposes.

    * For oiling chain and other components.
    * For oiling my cycle.
    * For oiling the Grill gates, Gates and doors at my home to avoid screech sound.
    * For oiling shop shutters.

    Local mechanic said he is using it for oiling bikes, and for his custom built emergency lantern....

    Is it a harmful practice, do let me know your view on this

    Environmentally speaking, using mineral oils is pretty safe to a certain extent but semi-synthetic and fully synthetic oils need proper disposal facilities.

    I have been using used mineral oils in Diyas for many decades!

        do we have to do anything with else with the old oil (i mean does it serves some other porpose) ?

        if it needs to be disposed off properly then whats the way to do it

          According to me its a very good practice. Instead of disposing it off you are re-using it. The re-using is more better than re-cycling.

          The old oil can be used to nearly all sorts of lubricating purposes IMO.

            I have a question, If old/used oil is used to lubricate a bike's chain does it have any bad impact on the chain? And I'm talking about o-ring type chain.

            Right now I'm using SAE90 gear oil for lubing my r15's chain as I found the motul chain spray kinda costly. If old oil can be used then it'll be good as we'll have something to do with the used oils too
            A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel.

              I wouldnt recommend to use any old engine oil or any oil other than SAE90 & chain sprays to lubricate the o-ring chain. But for conventional chains you can use it.

              Even i use the SAE90 oil to lubricate my bike chain which is also having o-ring chain. Anyways the function of an oil is to stick on the chain but the burnt oils loose its viscosity & hence it do not stick on the chain when it moves fast. Hence it is not useful.

                SAE 90 oil is good for lubricating the chain.

                If you don't get kerosin for cleaning the chain then use the old engine oil.

                Many twowheeler mechanics are using the old engine oil for lubricating purpose (including lubricating the chain) have seen it in many places.

                Only very few are using the red color oil

                    Its the old engine oil, as it lost its viscosity it doesn't stick to anything so it can be used for cleaning the chain.

                    After taking out the old engine oil I used to filter it and use it for other purposes.

                    Its black in color and it doesn't work exactly like kerosine but as it already lost the viscosity using it for cleaning the dust particle in the chain comes off with it

                    Let me know if its harmful

                        USed engine oil generally loses its viscosity. But that doesn't mean that it can be used to clean stuff...it still is greasy! It can be easily used to lube stuff other than engine, the oil can be very well used to lube the chain[not o ring] but the thing is since it is less viscous it doesn't stay on the chain. The chain dries off sooner

                            Using engine oil to lubricate joints in metal parts is actually a very innovative method of using the old engine oil, sometimes when my bike needs oiling at brake, brake levers , etc, I dont have any sort of oil at home so use the good old coconut oil which I use for my hair
