My steed has crossed 42K kms mark on the odo. In last couple of months is suffered few problems, each of which remind me that it needs more care now as the parts ageing. I had to change the fuel pump & fuel injector few weeks back. I do change the engine oil almost @1500KM ride interval. So, here's the question...How to check/know if the gear-box & clutch-plates are through their ages and needs to be replaced? Anyone, if has done it on his P220 FI, please suggest me out. How to know/feel that it's time to change them? Folks, help me plz.

Folks,

Well, one simple way to know when your clutch plate is gone is "what speed your bike does at what RPM in a particular gear". Like my bike does 64km/Hr in 5th Gear at 4000RPM (P220 DTSI).
When clutch plate is gone the bike would Rev higher to achieve the same speed, like 64 might come up at more than 5000RPM. (This is just an example)
Anyways what aargee has said is pretty comprehensive but just thought i should share this as an additionRIDE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!

...but should I change it even though it's okay, say after 45K in the odo? I'm curious.
@Pranav: I regularly check my acceleration and have a mark set, since long time...my P220 FI does 84-85KMPH @6K rpm...that's more or less in-tact till date...what do you say, is that a sign of healthy block?

Then your clutch plates are okay. Though what i have mentioned is only a parameter to check the plates! Well signs of a healthy block,
- It should rev freely upto the red line (sometimes your clutch plates are okay so RPM and speed are unaffected BUT your bike might not rev freely due to problems with camshaft etc.)
- Fuel efficiency Range, A healthy Pulsar 220 DTSI (my Bike so i dont know about the FI) shld return around 32-38 km/pl depending on riding style.
These are somethings i can think of to get an idea of engine condition.RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!

Same problem on my P150

I've been experiencing all of the above points recently. Will changing the clutch plates and friction plates solve my problem? How much does it cost to change both? My ride is a Pulsar 150 DTSi.More CC or Torque or Bhp doesn't decide who wins. Its the soul of the biker. Splendour and Pulsar are the same as long as the bikers share the same passion.

Why do you change oil every 1500kms?
Do you know that this practice is:
1. Illogical
2. Expensive
3. Damaging to the environment

I change the oil on my MT01 once every 5000Km and even this I feel is a ploy by the manufacturer to get more money for their dealerships.Kriss : 15.06.1981 - 11.10.2009

i used mineral oil back then...
and i'd change the oil every 1500-1800 kms depending on how i rode my bike.
if i used the oil for more than 2200 kms or so... it would come out pretty burnt looking.
since i've been used fully synthetic tho... i change the oil every 6000-8000 kms..

But using fully synthetic oil decreases speed right? Because i read somewhere on the forum that using fully synthetic oil decreased the bike's speed at 6000rpm from 75kmph to 72kmph. Is it true?More CC or Torque or Bhp doesn't decide who wins. Its the soul of the biker. Splendour and Pulsar are the same as long as the bikers share the same passion.

I'm in full agreement to the above; 1500 Kms is actually too much because a well maintained engine can last long almost 3 times of that. I infact do not even look into Kms clocked, I only change oil based on the smoothness & the way the engine behaves.Originally posted by gsferrari View Post1. Illogical

If you are burning engine oil it will be obvious as your 4-stroke will leave a trail of oil smoke. The engine oil will always turn black once you run it in an engine for sometime. This is a natural phenomenon. Now unless your engine oil level is reducing at an alarming rate or you are seeing smoke coming out of your exhaust there is NO reason to change oil so frequently!!
Please save your money and save the environment. The oil manufacturers would LOVE you to buy new oil every 500Km...you know better now.
aargee - 1500km oil changes are ludicrous!! I am just staggered at the level of ignorance on Xbhp w.r.t these basic aspects of motorcycle maintenance. When I drain the oil from the MT-01 I can see how discolored it is - this is NATURAL. I am forced to change every 5000Km because I need to maintain my warranty. Once I am out of warranty I am not going to change until the level is dropping or there is unusual engine performance/smoke. The HH Karizma manual states that one need to change oil at 6000 KM whereas service adviser suggest to change it every 2000KM. If HH oil is that bad then why the company itself mentioned in manual that the interval has to be 6k?
