  • Helmets and Riding Gear

Have been meaning to write this from quiet some time - but then didn't know whether this dilemma strikes everyone or not.

Right from deciding what bike to buy - after weighing every pro and con on all the bikes on the option list, reading in-numerous forums to know more about those bikes and getting friendly advices from one and all on what they want you to buy - it's a difficult decision which one ends up making with lots of doubts, apprehensions and anxiety.

Now here is what the next dilemma hits you when you least expect it's existence. RIDING GEAR!!

while some people already have it, there are some noobs like me who gave everything away FOC when I sold my bike. And when again I am planning to buy a bike, the only thing that's worrying me to no end is the Riding Gear.

Yes - I am sure of what bike I want. I was confused with the color - but then that would be decided on what's available in the dealer's stock. But one question which has been haunting me from quiet sometime is - Riding Gear. and where to buy it from if you do not have a proper dealership for these in your town.

    To start with - Helmets

    1. How to decide on what "Brand" you want to buy? I am kind of sure that more or less all the good helmet companies are more or less the same when it comes to how safe they would keep your head. but then that's where reality comes in the picture. They are of varied price range. Right from Rs. 3,500/- all the way crossing Rs. 1,00,000/- mark.

    2. How do you decide what helmet you want from that particular brand? I am none the wiser when they brand explains that the ABCD type of helmet is state of the art design with exceptionally good built quality and lots of air vents. This apparently they say for their EFGH, IJKL and MNOP series of helmets too.

    3. How do you decide on what color of helmet you want? I mean there are 2 kind of people. 1. who would want their helmet to match with the bike they ride (in terms of base colors) 2. who want their helmet to be a total contrast. I for one have got no clue what would look better (heyy that's why they have all those ultra cool designs on it)

    Jacket and Gloves

again - all the same points as above. the only difference being it's easier to choose between leather, textile and mesh. once you have decided that - then it gets crazy!! what brand, what type, what color, one with your bike's logos/brand on it, ones without anything on it blah blah blah!!

    Shoes

ok - let's accept this - they look super cool when you are riding, but then they make you look like a clown when you are off your bike. (let's say you went for a coffee on your bike with your riding shoes on - trust me I've seen people laughed on - and not just by a few, but i've seen almost the entire coffee shop going silent - and burst into laughter!!)

another problem is if you have a shoe fetish like me. i will wear any shoe no matter how ugly it might look, but it should be comfortable!! be it those loafers, leather/wooden sole, sneakers, or those typical puma shoes. my only agenda while buying a shoe is - it should be comfortable!!

Now I need suggestions on all the three points mentioned above!! And especially what can one do when they do not have local vendors for any of these things.

How to decide on the helmet?
How to decide on the jacket + gloves?
How to decide on the riding shoes?

    Help needed. Some clues. anything.
Biking is a religion, not a hobby!!

Let me share 2 cents of my experience...

Whenever I get serious about my purchase, I never do two things
      1. Hurry up
      2. Don't go blind in my purchase

I believe these 2 things takes care more than 50% of my issues. So I get to research them, spend time understanding what things are about, what qualities to look for, what other's buy in the market & try to derive a pattern. Then I choose my own model & make out of what I learned & ask my friends, if they're suitable & take it up from there.

Helmet - Quite an important decision to be taken. Any day thumbs down, I'd prefer a least genuine DOT certification than anything else. Reason is because, the West (developed countries) have far better standards on such things. Their certifications are for greater speeds that we're yet to see even in our highways officially. So quite a good chance that something works there, works here.

Ideally I'd like to buy 2 (or even 3) helmets; one for everyday riding, second for long hauls. Needless to say, the second one will have more safety standards than the first one.

Gloves/Jacket/Pants - I'd buy the one that is more suitable for the most part of the weather that I ride; I like to ride more in Summer & dry weather, so air ventilation is important & will give more priority to it. Most of my prior minor falls have yielded more in the palms, so a good leather protection on the palms is must for gloves. Jackets usually come by CE protected pads on elbow & shoulder (knees on pants) & back foam; that's for the everyday use.

I live in a place where there's no local vendor; so I'd personally like to check out any of my friend's outfit & then decide on the purchase OR best option is to ride to the store. The next best thing is to order based on the size chart, try the outfit & exchange for a new fit depending on the fit. Most online stores allow that these days, however, its best to talk to them in advance & find if they encourage such policies.

I quite agree with aargee about the helmet part. Lately I have been feelin the need of having two helmets exactly for the same reason. I think the choice of the other apparel must also depend on the weather where you live. I live in a very hot city and I will get baked if I wear a leather jacket here in summer (not kidding). Another factor for us in India is availability as you said. A few days ago I visited the DSG showroom in Pune and they had only a few selected pairs of gloves. Although there were quite a few helmets there.
As for shoes, again your best bet would be to buy two different sets for different purposes (ankle-high for regular use and the longer version for the highway or high-speed runs).
And lastly, rather than going for brands, choose comfort and what you want.

Yes, its correct. But if you look for basic thing Helmet is the most important thing. We dont use gloves & shoes, jacket, etc every time we go out, But helmet is most important!!

+1 to aargee on the two helmets funda. I have three of them... A Studds Ninja with tinted visor for riding in the city (Daytime only) as it is much lighter than Cross or Sparx (the other two helmets). Cross was bought specifically keeping in mind the safety standards and i use it for short runs in and around the city when i might have to ride at night time. Then i spotted the sparx hornet in delhi and i bought for longer highway tours.

As far as jacket is concerned, brands aren't the only way to ensure quality. I own an Xelemnt mesh jacket but it gets SO very hot in summers even without the liner. And so i got myself FOX protectors (elbow and knee) so that i can ride in summers too. The gloves i have are part mesh and part suede (on the palm) but do not have knuckle protectors... Joe Rocket - Rocket nation and they are comfy in summers too but you may want something better like a* which come with carbon fiber knuckles but get very sweaty owing to leather construction.

As far as Boots go, i use the trusty and reliable woodlands (once an aunty drove her car over my foot while standing in traffic on a red signal and trust me, those shoes saved my foot). You may want to get yourself a pair of ankle high Dainese shoes for touring but that is a luxury in my opinion. Ankle high woodlands should suffice for most parts.

aargee is spot on....he is good at choosing the right stuff

Helmets - Me too believe in 2 or 3 based on Usage...I have a Vega Boolean / Ninja / LS2(DOT)
Gloves - Again I would suggest 2 (for regular usage & longer distance touring)...I have a regular glove with knuckle protector and leather padding in the palms, the other for touring I have a A* GP plus
Jackets - Regular which has soft paddings for regular usage & tourer which should have better protection (again depends on the climatic conditions you are in)....I have a scoyco for regular usage and a A* for touring & a Duhan touring jacket
Boots - Have a ankle protected Rockport Hydro Shield / woodland which is comfortable for regular usage & have a RJays altitude for touring & use the same at times on track...
Never Give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about.

              Cheers

just because we don't use it doesn't mean its not important. I personally feel they are equally important. None can be compromised over the other.

                Just my opinion.

well i should have mentioned it earlier - this riding gear thread is for the SBKs.

completely agree with what's said about what works in west would work here too, but then in the west - they do not have 2 problems - heat and humidity!!

having 2 helmets is a good advice - but then not just for me but one for the pillion. as it's an SBK they only have to be full face.

now few things i am sure of as far as the riding gear is concerned. 1. it HAS to be textile only. 2. it should have enough vents to let me feel the breeze & enough protection to help me get up and ride again. 3. if possible - it should resist water (not that i plan to ride when it rains - but still)

i will put a task (actually a request) for all you guys here
help me decide on the riding gear for a bike which is arctic white silk in color with a red wheels and frame.
budget is undecided. maybe about 50k at the most (for everything!!)

post the links here or pm me. but i think posting here would be better as everyone can see them.

Evo 848??? I suggest you get a helmet from the duc showroom itself or if you want something else, i'd suggest you go for either of KBC Ladykiller or KBC Alien helmets. I saw them both in Gurgaon but were out of my budget (Somewhere around 15K) and both are available in Red. Will go well with the bike IMO.

Don't have much idea about options available in jackets and riding pants but Joe rocket does have jackets in White. If some of the senior members here have them, they might wanna share.

                    Cheers!

the duc showroom guys in Mumbai are asking obscene amount of money for the helmets they got.
Ahmedabad dealership (now closed) has got just one helmet Schuberth some model - which has a price tag of 78k - so not buying those.

KBC though nice - makes a bit loud helmets for my liking.

whatever you do - please do not stop the flow of suggestions..

It all start with the kind of money you are willing to shell out.
                        Helmets.
In terms of safety.anything above the 8k range from a reputed brand has helmets of a Composite shell.these shells provide good safety.
from 8k and above you are mainly paying for better fit, better venting, better designs and well better fit and finish over all.in terms of safety they will be more or less the same, mostly.
if you have a budget of 15k AGV's K3 is a great buy.and with a littler more money you can get KBC's VR4R Carbon Fiber.
and for 50k you can get ARAI's RX7GP/Crosair V-which is one of the finest in its segment.you can also get its CF ver. which is one of the few FULLY CARBON FIBER helmets in the world.

                        Jackets/Gloves

Spare around 6k for gloves and 12-15k for a Jacket and you can get great ones from A*.Other brands to consider at that range are JoeRocket and RJyas.

                        Shoes

A*SMX2 is one of the best street boots.very comfy even of the bike.costs arnd 14k.Rjays have one for arnd 5k.
but it would be best to have a full boot for touring.

I can count 5 items. Assuming you are not going for single piece riding suit.
                            1. helmet
                            2. jacket
                            3. gloves
                            4. pants (optional knee guard)
                            5. boots

Thats going to be a very tight budget. Was I you, I'd forget about the pants and boots and spend the amount on the rest.
