  • Best and Worst places to drive in India

    Hi,

I know we all have experienced and faced this.
So, I have started this thread so that all can share our experiences about the worst place we have dragged our bikes and the best places through which we have zipped pass.

The designation can be attributed to loads of factors like, situation of the roads, traffic sense among fellow commuters etc etc...

Then let the 'khoj' for the best and the worst places for us riders begin .

    Thankx.

Road conditions change, so do individual expectations from them and the rider's frame of mind. Still, it is an interesting topic. The right way to do it should be to mention the road alongwith the month-year when you did that road.

Anyways, pitching in from my side, the absolute worst stretch of road I have ever done in my Motorcycling life is the 80odd km stretch of road on NH17 between Kasargod,KL to Kannur,KL back in September 2010.

Starting the day from Mangalore, the roads were nothing to write home about. But the aforementioned stretch of road was especially bad. That was the only time in my life I was thinking that Motorcycling is bad and we should never tour on unknown roads. Thankfuly those thoughts vanished as soon as we took the exit to our left towards Sultan Bathery,KL and further to Ooty,TN on the same night. That was also my first of only 2 times when I have ridden in 3 states in the 1 calendar date.

Funnily enough, one of my favourite roads were also done on the very same date as the worst one . The road from Sultan Bathery to Ooty was an absolute delight to ride on and the mental and physical fatigue from the first half of the Day's ride was lost somewhere on the curves to Ooty. Even though our group eventually made it to our destination for the night only at 1AM, nobody wanted to sleep just yet due to the pleasure and the adrenaline rush those curves gave.

    Topic Approved
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

^^ and i thought moderators only post "thread approved" & "welcome to xbhp"

ok. nice thread. there are several nice roads we all have done, but what i feel is more than good, atleast every rider should tell worst roads he has faced to warn others.

one extremely bad patch of road i have done is during my ashtvinayak trip, which is there in my signature and everyone should avoid.

another was when i went to delhi from nagpur some ten years ago on my kinetic honda, some parts of roads in MP were so bad they couldn't be callex roads. i had around 11 puntures in MP with new set of tyres and tubes. finally after crossing MP i had to change my tube. later on i used to laugh about it that in MP there are places u cant get a wills navy cut but u will get a punture shop every half a km. luckily i was on a scooter so could manage with stephny, imagine what would havd happened if i had a bike.

will post a few more later.

          The Worst Roads ever

The 'crown' of the worst roads to ride on should undoubtedly go to Jharkhand. I am from the same state and to say the least, I am not proud of the highways (state and national) at all. Just to give you a glimpse of things there:
It is a mineral rich state - 1st in iron ore production, 3rd in coal, 1st in copper and so on....
Naturally, heavy vehicular traffic dominates the highways. Roads should have been built which are heavy duty (ideally). On the contrary, there are no roads at all! And this includes the National Highways

In fact, the roads (assuming them to be one) are so bad that it takes anywhere between 4-5 hours to travel a stretch of 120kms. Distance between Ranchi and Jamshedpur. The craters are unimaginably big and each day at least 10 trucks lose their axles, overturn and what not. The ministers prefer to travel by helicopter leaving the lesser mortals to travel by roads. Patch work dominates actual road construction. Illegal constructions on both sides of NH33. That means the NH becomes SINGLE lane in some places!!

The contractors make millions of rupees with each 'repair' work and leave everything to god. The ministers are red with their coffers overflowing with money earned by the gov by exporting minerals but nothing is done to improve the condition of the roads. My suggestion: Leave out jharkhand from your trip itinerary if it comes your way! I am ashamed, really.

BloggingWheels - Don't you feel we're going complete OT here

Bad roads are part of any trip; if we were all to ride ONLY on good roads, then, shouldn't the entire Nation stick to GJ & TN only? Besides, I believe there're better roads that can be ENJOYED other than GQ's & we're discussing about them.

Sorry, I did wander away a bit but I wanted to stress on the 'really' worst place to ride in India.
Quaint little roads on a scenic route though make up for every little problem faced!

You could've just said that in one sentence; just say which routes are scenic irrespective of the road conditions.

BTW, what do you think the road conditions are on some of the route I mentioned above especially with KL & KA? Worst, but that doesn't deter us from riding there isn't it? Absolutely mind blowing sceneries.

I haven't have ridden much except in my Hercules MTB 'dx' .

But frankly I have had some city rides in Lucknow(my City ), Bhubaneshwar, Ahmedabad, Surat, Jaipur and Gurgaon.

Surat and Ahmedabad has some fine roads but the people are ignorant of traffic rules they follow them coz traffic poilce forces them too .

As of my experience Gurgaon has fine main roads(though cramped with vehicles) but in the interior they are as anywhere else, and people here do follow the rules in the main road. But the locals(no offences ment) here are like they will never use the indicator and would than would be hell bent on blaming you for the accident or any other event....

would be posting more as my 'experience' increases .

And thankx antz.bin for approving it .
