  • Bajaj Management views on strategy, future products and competition

Moderators: Found a news article where bajaj management shared their views on lots of topics. If this doesnt necessiate a new thread please merge with an appropriate one. The news article is 6-7 months old but i think it has lots of insights.

Link to news article where entire interview can be read:

Yamaha has gained significant market share inthe 150cc segment in recent months? What are they doingright and how do we plan to take them on? >>
    Answer>>
    >>
In our view, they are not being veryastute since it is actually diluting brand Yamaha. Infact, it almost endorses the Pulsar because Yamahaselling a similar bike much cheaper only means thatthe Pulsar is worth that much more.>>

Thread Approved and moved to General Biking Discussion

    Excellent article and nice find.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

I like the way how he slips in "Don't repeat this before my Dad!!", he is definitely got a nice sense of humour along with acute business sense. Hope he gives us many more excellent products from Bajaj stable.

Couple of points which need to be highlighted are

              1) Mr Bajaj really respects competition and its capacity(read Honda). His reference that they can come out with a remarkable product being world leaders is really inspiring. Very few people accept the capabilities of their competition
              2) Mr Bajaj says they will not make scooters now, but that doesnt mean they are compeletly out of it. there is some more time before they venture into it. So are they working on any products to be launched say 7-8 yrs down the line?
3)Bajajs strategy on increasing CC of bike is minimum 25% and maximum of 50%. This seems to be true when we check the variants of existing products. Also this throws the light into what can we expect after P200NS. Even if they comeup with 350 cc there should be atleast a 250CC sometime because of their philosophy of min25%.
              4) One point he mentioned was that old pulsar 150 cannot be replaced with new 150 cc. Does it mean no P150NS?
              5) Mr Bajaj compares with BMW on how they come out with sedan, sports, SUV version of a vehicle and says thats what they are planning with pulsar and they will launch similar type of variants, one variant every year. cool.

"But at a time, when we only have a motorcycle market share of 10% globally, I thinkthe right thing to do is to focus on growing that 10%".

Good to know they plan on becoming a global player delivering world-class products. That is the way to go...

                Kudos to Mr Bajaj.

Who knows parallel V-twins( ) with 5 spark plugs each could be the Rage all over the world..

The article certainly explains the logic behind
                  150
                  180 (150+20%)
                  and 220 (180+22%).
What it doesn't explain is the logic behind the
200(dual spark) (180 + 11%?) and so it was promptly shown the door.

Using Rajiv Bajaj's logic, I guess we can estimate which will be the mid-range Pulsar. The Pulsar 135LS could be considered as the first of the 2nd gen Bajaj Bikes i.e. those identified by the 2 letter suffix (LS/NS/ST), that way, the middle slot remaining for a 160-165cc.

But! Recently I saw a question somewhere, 'Is Pulsar 135LS worth over Discover 125ST?' When it comes to this, they are in some trouble (Chevrolet and Cadillac logic). What this means is, Pulsar 135LS will most certainly be the next one to get the monoshock upgrade and a minor power bump for it to remain relevant.

It's surprising Bajaj's views on competition, strategy and future products are out in open as a press brief. Every company does have strategies and plans and they seldom reveal to open.
May be bajaj wants to confuse competition by airing wrong strategies, b'cos Bajaj had made press brief in 2006 that it is coming with LPG bike it never came....TVS got confused and spent time on it's own gas bike....

going by his logic of minimum 25% and maximum 50%-

                      P200NS + 25% = P250
                      P200NS + 50% = P300

i am loving it. which will come first- 250 or 300 ?? or 350 ??

LPG, frankly, is not worth anybody's time. They can do enough things with Petrol itself to increase Fuel economy before they have to look forward to alternate fuels, especially LPG.

Had it been CNG, it could have been worth due to the amount of savings, but still, on a 8 bhp bike, how much power-loss can you realistically live with in the interest of economy?

Considering the costs difference, LPG itself will take 40-50k km to break-even (w.r.t. cost of extra equipment over petrol only) and around the same time for CNG, but for such a small engine, there is really no point.

                        Why not :
                        P200 + 25% = P250
                        P250 + 40% = P350

This bit is actually the easy bit since they are already developing the 250-350cc platform. To go beyond this will take some doing.

Bajaj has indeed done (or is it still doing?) some research on LPG/CNG based bifuel bikes. Our xbhp forum itself a teasure trove.

Please go through the following links for the spy pics

                          Bajaj Platina LPG bike

But as you said the economics might not have worked out due to which they were not launched.

Good catch.. P135LS should get perimeter frame in addition to monoshock/possibly a rear disc brake and a minor power bump to truely set it free from any comparision with Discover. I agree that P135LS, P160, P200 & P250 sounds like a very good lineup (all 4-valve lineup ). In fact, sometime ago this was exactly my speculation. This kind of line-up leaves so little to competition, they will be forced to go back to drawing board.

Just thinking how will the Pulsar/Discover/Boxer line will turn up. Trying to extrapolate with specifications on P200NS and discover 125ST
                              Pulsar
Objective:High performance sport machines with free revving engines
engine : oversquare bore with pentroof combustion, 4 valve and offset placed crankshaft, triple spark for single cylinder and V configuration and twin spark for inline, SOHC for lower end pulsars and DOHC for high end pulsars
                              cooling: liquid cooled
Pulsar 200NS seems to meet most of the above specifications

                              Discover
Objective: refined, vibe free, fuel efficient and stress free engines for long commute
engine : square bore, three valves, twin spark, SOHC
cooling : air cooled with corrugated fins
As seen with Discover 125 ST the above descirption seems to be met. Now Discover 100/150 can come out with three valve engines

                              Boxer
Objective: utilitarian vehicles, loaded with torque and fuel efficient
engine : under square bore, two valves, twin spark, SOHC
                              cooling: air cooled

Does anybody think that above specifications make any sense? if so can we tryout expected chasis specifications
