  • DIY: Decarb

Hi ppl, Planning to open the head and decarb the piston top, combustion chamber, exhaust port. How do I decarb the exhaust header pipe internally? Also, what surfaces should be polished besides exh port?

When you doing this..i would be interested in coming over.
best bet is to blow water thru the exhaust...i am under the impression that there is usually not much carb deposits in a four stroke exhaust.Check the pulsar head..its very well done..hardly any casting flaws.but replace the top gasket...and check valve seating...

Arpan, I will be doing this in 2004. My exams will be over by then. And will call u over definitely. I've blown water through the exhaust, used strong acids to dissolve the carbon deposit. But dude, the pipe is very rough from inside, shouldnt it be polished?

Why polish it? i mean so wat if its rough...sorry but i fail to understand effects of it being rough...explain pls..
One more thing...we need to figure out how to clean the piston dome of the carbon..for a engine i was working on..i used a exco blade..but it seems that its not the right way...but piston has to be soaked in 2T oil etc...do you want to remove combusion chamber too?

            rohit,
i have a suggestion, why dont u give ur bike to a mechanic for decarbing and sit with him while he is working on ur bike, in this way u will can ask him any doubt..

            Just a suggestion [|)][|)]

sabby we have a diff. approach...rather then leting the mechanic screw up our bike...we prefer to do it ourselves
jokes apart...a mech. will do 5 bikes a day...while we do one bike in 2-3 months....so obv. the owner himself knows his bike best.

Like arpan said, it would be more informative to do it ourselves. And, actually its not very difficult. Yes, gonna remove the combustion chamber too.

                        Hi,

Do post the pics of the decarb process. Never seen a pulsar's innards and its decarb process.

                        Regards

yes the exhaust port can be polished.also look for the casting flaws around the head and valves area.smothen those out too.bend pipe's a prob.i've seen mechs using unwound brake or clutch cables to scbeat the carbon.

Overhauled the engine and opened the head today, phew what a job... Snapped two of the head cover bolts[xx(]. Finally opened the head and saw the state of the piston top and combustion chamber. Yup, there's lot of carbon and the piston has almost an mm thick carbon layer at some regions. The valve heads have a layer of greyish deposit, what the hell is it? And cant manage to lift the barrel, am I forgetting something? How do i polish ports, what precautions are to be taken while removing valves and guides? will post pics tommorrow morning.
