The alternate option of using android apps sound promising.. but the question still remains.. what is the effective range of these apps? 10 mtrs or less??

^^ Nope, i checked it out, but it works on data connection.... PTT (Push To Talk), so it won't be much useful, in jungles, and most of times on highways you won't have data connection.

Tried, works well.
On a phone I guess WiFi works better than Bluetooth, it can reach more. There are Many WiFi walkie talkie apps on google play too

InterCom / Connectivity - While riding in group.

WiFi or Bluetooth, both will drain the battery very quickly. Unless the phone is on continuous charge it's only viable for short trips...
