  • [Photo Feature]: The Vespa 946

This scooter was launched a few months ago. I just came across it. It is tantalizingly gorgeous. Thought of sharing it. Even though scooters are not really eyecandy for most bikers, but still. It is a Vespa. It was designed to commemorate the 1946 Vespa. That is the reason the new scooter is named the Vespa 946.

Attention to low consumption of the 3-valve engine, associated with a friction and vibration reduction system . A completely digital instrumentation. Born in 1946 to get an entire nation on the move, the Vespa gave new impetus to the entire world. Similarly, the 946 is the result of the pride of an all-Italian research, development and production centre. It leaves Pontedera for the entire planet. Every evolution can only start from its origins. A glance at the 946 brings to mind the creativity and inventive ability of Corradino D'Ascanio, the brilliant designer of the first Vespa. As for the MP6 prototype which inspired it, the Vespa 946 is the dynamic model of the beginning of a new era. Behind the breathtaking lines of the first scooter with monocoque body is advanced technology, designed to constantly evolve in terms of users and eco-friendliness.

The 946 125 cc, single-cylinder 4-stroke engine, with 3-valve injection and bearings for all moving parts, minimises fuel consumption and emissions. All this can be summed up in the definition techno(eco)logical power.

I think Vespa was a forbearear and an Oracle when it comes to scooters. Crisp photos.

        Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
        The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

        THE END

Somehow I found the design a bit too radical. And how would that seat support a slightly heavier pillion?

In my opinion, this concept will also evolve into a more practical design by the time it hits production - this has always been the case with most of the concept cars and bikes shown in auto shows.

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

              Production model...

Effectively, the changes between the prototype and the production model have been truly minimal. The most significant of these changes are a slightly longer wheelbase and a sturdier footrest platform. And all of this was achieved despite the fact that the Vespa 946 was conceived as a pure concept with no intention at first to make it a production model. This meant that we made no concessions for production necessities when we created the prototype. And yet we succeeded in preserving the purity of the design and in keeping very true to the concept seen in 2011, which was such a success that it convinced us to develop it for production. This, however, is the job of the designer: to make what was previously impossible reality, working in close contact with the engineers, while the job of the engineers is to do what Piaggio does best, to ensure reliability and peace of mind. There's nothing remotely like it in production today, nothing so refined, and nothing so advanced and sophisticated.

I wish they would have put headlights above the wheel instead of on the handle, just like the old Vespa, it would've looked awesome!
