  • [Urgent] Nightvision Glasses for Riding!

    Hey all,
I'm planning a trip from Chennai to Hyderabad (about 655 kms) in a single day on my Yamaha FZ. It is not going to be daylight all the time.

Can anybody share with me something about night vision riding glasses? Do they really enable seeing in the night? How much will a good pair cost? Where can I get it in Chennai, I will have to buy it today itself ! Anything else one should know about it

Re: [Urgent] Nightvision Glasses for Riding!

As far as I'm aware Night Vision(NV) goggles are not easily available or even recommended for general public.
But you can easily get your hands on night vision camera, connect it to screen mounted on the bike. But it is not safe to rely on a screen at night all the time instead of your own eyes.
I haven't searched much online, I'm just saying its difficult to get your hands on one IMO. But not impossible.
Moreover it might cause issues with a full face helmet.
Just because you haven't seen it doesnt mean its impossible...expect the unexpected.

Just as the above rider said, night vision glasses aren't available for the masses..
best would be to get a high intensity bulbs or projectors..

        Ride safe and have fun.

When a gamer steps into reality or you must be a spy movie fan - x-ray vision, night vision, thermal sensor etc. Change your stock headlights to HID and projectors. That should be enough to give you the vision at night.

Nikhil, this is the basic working principal behind the Night vision Device:

"It works by collecting the tiny amounts of light, including the lower portion of the infrared light spectrum, that are present but may be imperceptible to our eyes, and amplifying it to the point that we can easily observe the image."

So, Night vision is not at all suitable for Riding on public roads. imagine what happens when the Night vision device picks up the headlights of an on-coming vehicle, you will be completely blinded because its job is to amplify the tiny amounts of light ( lower portion of the infrared light spectrum). forget about this device and try to upgrade your headlight.

you were drunk when you posted this, right?

NVGs cost a bomb. They are not meant to be sold to general public and you definitely can't ride a darn bike wearing one.

Ah, that's too harsh man. Go easy, it's just a general query and I don't think it's that stupid either.

                  Simple answer by me,
                  1. If you face problems at night, why do you want a night vision glasses unless you are walking instead of riding at dark (PS: am I right or wrong in this). . .
                  2. Why waste your money on those kind of night vision glasses when you can get yourself a projector or a HID, you'll have very good lighting of the road which is far better than you night vision glasses. . .

PS: You sure you asking them for riding and not gaming . . .

                  Cheers!!!

Re: [Urgent] Nightvision Glasses for Riding!

I searched for Night Vision glasses for touring an year back. Even got to try some. So trust me, DONT even think about getting them for night rides. They are okay if u wanna go for a warfare on ur Pulsar or sneak into ur girlfriends room at night But if you are gonna ride on a road where someone can come flashing 8 x 100W High beam lights on you... You will be in deep trouble.
You can order them via Ebay or Amazon. There are plenty of them available and if you have a good budget, u can get military grade stuff with Predator like Thermal vision

With all due respect to other posters in this thread, this ^^^ reply by frankpilli is by far the best and most informative IMHO.

Re: [Urgent] Nightvision Glasses for Riding!

[MENTION=8403]frankpilli[/MENTION]. An excellent reply and thoroughly accurate at that. If I may add to the topic.

Night vision devices are, as frankpilli has brought out, image intensification devices. They work only when the quantity of ambient light available is enough to be "boosted" by a process of electronics and optics. Regardless of the generation (Gen 1, Gen II, Euro vs US etc) the basic principle stays the same.

I have used NVDs extensively during the course of my work both during training and operations. They are a terrific aid to stealthy surveillance and penetration of hostile space as long as one knows how to use them.

From the time before the protective caps over the object piece (i.e. towards the target) are removed and the device is powered on till the time the reverse process is done, there must be NO strong light source shining into the object lens. Else the device and your eyes both are fried. For the device, the II mechanism goes kaput and for your eyes, there may be permanent damage to the retina. In any case, one goes about for days with a hazy, whitened image of the world, something akin to what psychotropic drugs do. You want that, get your friendly neighbourhood opthalmologsit to dilate your pupils like is done before a retinal check and you will know what I mean.

Many action movies show the view as seen thru an NVD - the greenish, pixelated ghostly image is correct. And when a strong light source comes p, there seems to be a flash like a gas tank explosion.

Leave alone the 110/90s on many cars these days, a wimpy 60/55 headlight punching out 60 watts on high beam will permanently scar your retina beyond repair a.k.a you will go blind and fark the NVD.

The latest NVDs do have a very fast reaction to minimise intensification when confronted with a strong light source but the human iris is not as fast. Ergo, burn out.

One question, just out of curiosity. How the bloody hell did you even think of this in the first place, using an NVD while riding a bike

Few things which requires your attention for riding in the dark:

                            A very clean visor.
A small bottle of colin and micro Fibre cloth to clean the visor against insect attack in the evenings.
An anti Glare pair of glasses to avoid the glare from high beams. It was available at GKB opticals and Essilor(in Bangalore), the last time I was searching for the same. It costed around 800 bucks, not sure if they are reduced by now.

And most importantly, proper rest prior to the ride.
