• A Tribute-- Resoration of a Junked CBZ

Hi everyone,

I will be taking delivery of a junked motorbike which belonged to my cousin. Tragically, he was killed in an accident a couple of years ago and the motorcycle was seized and kept at the police station as evidence. After all the court hearing and the insurance payout, the motorcycle was released to his younger brother who decided to do up the motorcycle as a gift to my deceased cousin's son(who will turn 18 next year).

After all the conversations via phone, email and whatsapp, I have deduced that the bike's chassis is OK however all the plastics are either broken or stolen. The carb is missing and the engine does not turn over. The motorcycle was retrieved from the police station(in Cuddalore) and it is on the way to Delhi.

I have decided to get the bike mechanically and electrically restored(with some upgrades) and then ship it off(or ride it ) to Chennai where the painting and the plastics bit will be taken care of. As we both have a limited budget, we have decided to use the Hero honda parts bin only and also the OEM manufacturers (minda, Imperial auto fittings, Unitech, sunbeam, usha etc). In case, some parts are not available, we will be using compatible parts from Karizma, and all the other Hero honda bikes.
psr, ashwin, acs, Divya, rreneav and all the karizma/CBZ owners: your help will be required to isolate all the compatible parts and the part numbers for this restoration.

we have given ourselves one year for this resto..

lets see

pics will be uploaded when I get the bike(within a week or so)

thanks...

What do I intend to do? Stuff ZMR drivetrain into an Ambition chassis and watch others run scared!

Query Approved

Glad to see the restoration work plan.

Cheers!

The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

Sad to hear that the bike was a result for accident. I am curious to know how old the bike is (year of make) and whether you would be able to restore without substatial costs. But more than that, I appreciate your time and effort to help the kid get back a piece of what was once his dad's ride .

The motorcycle is 14 years old...Jan/Feb 2000 make...managed to procure a lot of parts today..I'm trying to limit the cost of mechanical restoration till 12000 rupees...

I have the time, tools and the tenacity to embark on this restoration...All i need is a little stroke of good luck...

I have the prinouts of the Honda tiger and the Cbz classic workshop manuals ..I just want links of the Karizma parts manual and the Cbz parts manual ...

Will go thru all of them first...That way I'll be able to gauge the difficulty of this resto...and yes, no mechanics are involved unless absolutely necessary.

Re: A Tribute-- Resoration of a Junked CBZ

I'm of the opinion that a person wouldn't want his son to ride a motorcycle he was killed on. Also, I don't know if gifting a motorcycle with this sort of legacy to an 18 year old is a good idea.

If it has to be a bike, gift the 18 year old with a fresh start instead, choosing a bike/scooter/moped that fits his psyche and skill.

Sorry if this contrarian opinion hurts feelings but I just couldn't resist.

We took this decision after speaking to his wife and also my nephew. He wanted a memento of his father's life and bhabhi also wanted the motorbike to be restored in his memory. Whether the bike is ridden or parked in the driveway, that is upto my nephew. Atleast it will not be rotting in the Godforsaken police impound...

Edit: My fondest memories on the bike were the daily grocery runs with my brother just after my board exams in 03...

A Tribute-- Resoration of a Junked CBZ

Some thing you would want to do part of the restroration.

1) strip the bike to its bare
2) have the frame sand blasted, it will bring out any flaws form the few years it was resting in the impound. Restore any detoriated parts or replace as needed.
3) powder coat the frame paint will not help as it will flake out in few years again.
4) recomend a complete strip and rebuild of the engine. See following reasons
4.1) engine case may have traces of moisture that will rust the bearings main bearing, connector rod and needle bearing. Better to change now than a failuer during usage.
4.2) timing chain will have lost the orings insdie it so will need chainging
4.3) all oil seal will be contaminated and will not hold the oil back so need changing
4.4) ensure to rebuild the head the valve seating will jave traces of rust.
5) gearbox, ensure that clutch plates are changed

5.1) fiber plates will detoriate and disintergrates when you hit 3k and anove if reused as the bike is old and not used for long time
5.2) friction plates will have traces of rust so dont resue might as wella s change as set.
5.3) on the gearbox there are few bearings and seale nsure all are changed as non usage would have killed all of them.
6) check the front fork changet he oil and seals also see the condotion of the springs they should not have lost their pre tentions. Seal would have been gone by now. Do a similar check for the rear shocks.
7) front rear rocket and chain not sure if they would have lasted this long out in the cold without lube so may need changing.

If your located of delhi there is a vey big used parts market that can save you a lot of money if you have a good nach of looking around. Headlights, indicators etc can be procured from there to reduce your project cost considering the rearness of oem parts and age of the bike.

Ensure your tourque back every thing to specification to avoid anything flying off. If you can fid the cbz alloys use them instead of the spoked rims that way the bike gets disc breaks int he front and tubeliess tires which will be a good upgrade.

Missed adding. Engine and swing arm bed bush would have been in cracked state due to the exposure to adverse climate.
The rear wheel hub bushing.
