  • *What is the difference between the Yamaha Brothers???

    Hey Folks!
I love all of the Yamaha Bikes esp. FZ and SZ (both carbureted)
I got to know that FZ and SZ both have the same engine but the power is low in SZ compared to FZ (detuned engine). By doing what they detuned the FZ engine?

OK, so if I buy a SZ, what are all the modifications I need to do to convert the detuned SZ engine to a pure FZ engine?

Why not buy an FZ instead?

Re: *What is the difference between the Yamaha Brothers???

Here are the following modiciations needed to convert an SZ (carb version) engine to FZ:

        * Buy the BS 26mm Mikuni carburettor for FZ: Costs around Rs. 4800 - 5000
        * TPS sensor: Rs. 4800 should be interchangeable with that of SZ's though you will have to check with the SVC to confirm the same.
        * Buy the camshaft of FZ and replace with that of SZ's. Bear in mind that the newer lot of FZ camshafts for 2012-2013 had a milder lift to increase FE and slight compromise in performance as compared to 2009 - 2010 models. So if you can somehow mange to get hold of the older stock nothing like it: Rs. 3000 - 3500/-
        * If you still want more punch then replacing the mainjet from 112.5 to 115 (mikuni make) will make the bike very punchy and eager at the top end.

Since the SZ engine has the base of FZ, all the mods mentioned above can be carried out without losing the reliability of the engine though bear in mind, in the pursuit of performance you will end up losing the FE by a great margin. Before taking on any such engine modification job, ensure that you get the whole bike thoroughly washed, cleaned and dried in order to provide a cleaner platform for the work to be carried out and avoid dirt and dust from entering the engine components.

However, if you have not purchased either of them, it would be better if you go for the newer FZ 2.0 with fuel injection system (though the looks are subjective to one's liking). FI will offer crisper throttle response for city commuting and from the reports of owners offers better FE.

        Hope this helps,

        Cheers,

          Yeah, that I understood.
SZ + cost incurred in mods may bring it close to a new FZ no?

B-but, I am on 2nd hand market now with a killer budget of 25k.
I see a lot SZs at this price and no FZs at this price.

I read in ownership thread of the SZ X and SZ R (to be exact from pg 69 to pg 71) that gearing and sprockets differ. What about that?

If you are in the second hand market and want better performance for the price paid then nothing beats the mile munching mule: Hero Honda Karizma (carburetted version). It is a proven tourer and extremely refined and no nonsense bike and should be available in Chennai within a price bracket of 20 - 25k. In simpleton terms for the same price you are getting a 223cc bike which offers more BHPs, 35 - 36 kmpl in the city and upto 40 kmpl on highway at sane speeds (Owners please correct me if i am wrong on the figures) which is comparable to the 153cc FZ many owners have reported on the ownership log. Xbhp is filled with trip logs of countless riders who have clocked over 1000 kms on a single day on ZMA without the bike sweating one bit and riders heading into the deepest corners of the country. There are plenty of senior riders from Chennai who have clocked pan india tours on this bike and are all praises for it. The cheap indian mentality (pun intended) always leans towards deals where you get more for what you pay in which case, ZMA is a far better bet than SZ or FZ.

I am not sure what are you getting at.. Are you looking for a bike purely on the "Yamaha badge" basis or you have a set of requirements??
              Like say:

              * commuting or street fighter?
              * relaxed seating position or aggressive stance?
              * FE or performance?
              * long distance capability or red light signal fun?
              * "Fill it, shut it, forget it" i.e. lesser maintenance bike?

If second market is the place you are looking at for picking up your bike then i suggest broaden your horizon instead on getting fixated with the idea of picking up an SZ and modifying to FZ.. doesn't make any logical sense. If performance is what you seek then there are better options in the market. If you are only looking at Yamaha as a brand to go for then FZ will be a better bet than SZ anyday.

Re: *What is the difference between the Yamaha Brothers???

A somewhat sporty sitting posture is better because my dad will also ride.
I look for the Tuning fork company's SZ because of the smoothness and low price in 2nd hand market.
I have a 1997 Splendor which has proven itself by touching almost 2 lakhs kms without even opening the engine. It's spark plug was changed only at first service and the plug has never changed till now. It had some serious quality. So I always like hero.
So, a street fighter bike is preferred.
Performance is preferred. Ad got bored with splendor riding it for 17 yrs!!!
Red light fun is considered and few long trip a but nothing more than 35-45 kms.
Yes. Being owned splendor, a high maintenance will break my heart!
Only 2nd hand market strictl . For 25k none can get a bike out from showroom.

You can keep an eye on bikes sold through banks. These are bikes which are surrendered to the bank/finance companies if one is not able to carry on with the EMIs. A person known to me had to surrender his FZ(military green 7K km.s, 11 months) to the bank. And he later came to know the bike was sold within 2 days @ rs. 28000/-. A very good price from the point of the customer I guess.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

But don't think that would be available.
