• ViaTerra FLY - Review

th IS G2G ride to Kodaikanal. But thanks to plasmabhai I got to use it for a day there. First impression: I have to buy it as soon as I get back home.

    Mounting/ Un-mounting:Keeping the cam safe/Cushioning /Stability:
Believe me I did ride on some of the very bad roads at decent speeds but the bag did not move. And the camera was safe and sound inside to click the entire trip. It did not rain much hence could not check the rain proofing abilities of the cover provided free with the bag.

    Carrying Capacity:
Though the bag looks very small, it has a good carrying capacity, if packed properly. I kept a Canon EOS 1100D with kit lens, a 55-250mm telephoto, a 50mm prime, rain coat, pajama, extra pair of socks, a decent first aid kit, puncture kit, wallet, a very small 300ml water bottle and 4-5 snickers.
More than enough for a 2 day ride. But I missed a proper pocket on the side for a water bottle, the two side pockets are very small in size, if one is just made a bit bigger to fit a water bottle, it would just be perfect.

The small bump is because of the small water bottle which i had to carry in the top zipper.

That white polythene was taken out just to click, it fits very easily with some more space left!

    Rain Proof:

Just the week after my Hampi ride I had a Maharashtra ride planned, and during July/August it rains cats and dogs there. This was gonna be a test for the rain cover for sure. Encountered some very heavy rains on this ride, but as expected the rain cover did its job just fine. You guys know how it rains in Maharashtra, I was not able to see the roads properly because of the incessant rains, but no moisture or water droplets got inside the bag. And the straps to connect the ends of rain cover are a nice idea, no problem of the rain cover flying due to heavy winds. Even without the rain cover the bag can withstand drizzle.
I will try to post a video of the kind of rains I encountered in the Maharashtra trip.

The strap which makes sure that FLY doesn't fly with the wind

All this at a price of Rs. 2200/- . A must have bag for tourers who carry a DSLR, I am gonna get one more to use as a tail bag.

Product link : Motorcycle Touring, ViaTerra Fly - Camera / DSLR Tankbag

    Thank you ViaTerra.
    A very satisfied customer.

Very nice review kaydee_bangalore . Thanks a lot for the mention. And I can vouch for each and every point that you have highlighted.

The most common question that people asked me was that wasn't it cumbersome to strap it on and off, but seriously even I was surprised it takes maximum of 2 minutes to get the job done. And absolutely anyone who uses it will be surprised at the capacity that it has, one can really store a lot of stuff in there..!! The build quality is superlative and I love the versatility of the tank bag which can also act as tail bag or back pack..!!

There is one point which I will like to point out, for smaller bikes (like mine) there is a substantial amount of excess strap which hangs after you have tightened all 3 D-clips. These straps hits both my knees and right wrist and this is distracting while riding. I am planning to get some velcro stitched at the right spots in each strap so that the excess strap will stay in place. Will upload a few pics when I get that done. I am not sure but this feature is supposedly already there in the claw. And should be added in future versions (along with provision for a small water bottle :P ).

      Cheers!

        Thanks bhai

Yeah that is the case with my bag as well, the straps are very long. This query was posted on ViaTerra facebook page as well. The solution given by them is to cut it according to the bike. But that doesn't seem very convincing. The claw has a velcro attached with which u can take care of the extra strap.

I just entangle both the straps near the tank somehow to avoid that distraction.

I also do the same thing. Cutting the excess strap is silly but velcro is the best soln. and can be easily done at your neighborhood tailor shop.

Cutting the straps will customize it to the model of bike you have. But after cutting the straps with a scissor, be sure to burn the ends of the straps with a candle and then dab the ends to fuse the loose ends to prevent the threads from fraying.

@kaydee_bangalore Thanks for the detailed Review. I too agree with you, a bottle compartment would have helped a lot. After watching both the Videos & Reading your review most of my doubts are clear & now I am Planning to my FLY soon

Can we carry a Laptop in the rear compartment by any chance?

PS: Is it just me or others to think that the price tag of 2.2 K is on a higher side?

Hey buddy, there us no "rear compartment" in the bag, the rear zip actually opens a storage for the straps when the bag is being used as a back pack. So no you cannot keep a laptop in there and in any case a laptop will be too big to fit in there.

Also the price point of 2.2K is actually pretty damn value for money, especially if you consider the quality + utility of what you are getting at the price you pay, versus what the competition is offering for similar price range. Let me do a small competition review here:

Cramster turtle doesn't have that good a build quality. Viaterra Ranger tank bag has a much better build quality, same basic features but lesser storage retails at the same price as turtle - 1800.

For Rs2000 you will get the Rynox Navigator which was my first choice except when I actually saw it I realised it was so small that you can hardly keep anything in there. The navigator says 7 litres storage but the rigid shape of the bag is such that you just cannot fit in anything substantial at all.

Then you have the Rynox Optimus S and M tank bags which retail for Rs3000 or more and offer pretty much the same features as the Fly but have better storage and better build quality than Fly apart from a few extras such as Map flap etc.

And lastly you have the Biking Spirit's Echo 7 and Echo 17 which are again very basic feature wise but their attachment to the tank (via a velcro adapter) is of question. Other tank bags like from DirtSack I have never seen in person (unlike the above each of which I personally checked before buying the Fly). So can't say much.

So when you consider what you are getting at the price and what your other options are the Fly is a good deal. Finally if you buy it from a shop you can always bargain an additional 5% off (which most store owners will give you) and get it for slightly cheaper.

Also the ViaTerra Fly is the only Tankbag out there that has been built keeping in mind to carry a DSLR (and related accessories) Safely.

                    Love the comparison.

kaydee_bangalore : I never imagined you can fit so much in what looks like a small little DSLR tank bag. Great review.

Thanks for the suggestion sir. But I think my fly will last till my next bike change which is not anytime soon. So I will be keeping the straps.

I think it should. Check the mounting video once, the straps are very very long.
