  • How does a particular grade of oil help in smoother running?

or rougher running, as the case may be?

i can understand that higher the viscosity, more will be the damping effect of the oil, and consequently lesser noise, but when we say "smoother" it means lesser vibrations, which is only damped by higher viscosity.
is there anything else to it?

because if viscosity is the only reason, then might as well go in for the maximum viscosity the bike can handle safely for the particular climate, and be done with it.

this is not a synthetic vs mineral debate, but i do know synthetic oils are superior to minerals...

The tolerances of engine internals will also matter. From the practical world - Put less viscous oils in a Bajaj engine and it starts leaking away to glory. While on Honda engine it runs perfectly fine.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

There is lot more to it than just viscosity. Answers to your query and a lot more can be found in this path breaking 2 part series of articles done by Sport Rider magazine.

        Hi.
Very informative links and titled very aptly "Oils well that ends well". reminds me of the song "Non sense ki night(All is in the well when end is in the well..)"

Also felt very proud to know that MOTUL 300V is 100% ester and its worth the money (Thats what I use ).

        Thanx and regards.
