I being a hardcore fan of bikes and also riding them for quite some time made me to ponder in to the thought of what made me consider scooter as a choice. To put it simple even on a middle class jargon the motorbikes are quite comfortable and considerably safer option compared to the scooters, people may argue how do you say motorbikes are a safer option. So let me put forth my considerations which led me to the above statement. So First on the cost front a similar 125cc or a 150cc motorcycle is cheaper by at least 5K compared to the scooter in the same engine category.(please correct me if am wrong). Second mileage and maintenance wise as well the bikes are considered the cheaper option. So coming to the comfort and safety wise, we have the liberty to throw our legs over the bike making me secure, have a larger grip on the bike and most importantly makes me feel more in control, where as on the other hand riding a scooter only makes me feel i have lesser grip and less in control. I don't know how many would even feel the same way but this is completely my understanding when compared to scooters. Scooter being not very dynamic it doesn't give you a comfortable feeling with only your foot , butt and palms the only contact points and hand controls are the only control area. Personally these characteristics on a scooter doesn't give me the confidence while riding. Nonetheless any speed above the 60kmph on a scooter makes me feel like i am flying. Coming to the suspension and brakes point of view the bikes have a softer and a plush setup (mainly the commuter class bikes) whereas the scooters are stiff comparably. Though the seating in both are rather upright, the scooters tend to induce more strain on your back due to the stiffer setup. Brakes again are of limited bite due to smaller wheels on the scooters.
Conclusively to me Bikes are way better in offering a better ride to the rider, but obviously the bikes do have their own flaws over the scooters.Likely due to their weight it is less agile on the city streets, lack of gears and clutch the input given to the scooters are less and thus very easy to slip away and make quick maneuvers. Moreover for no good reason scooter seem to be the favorites for the older gen and young women. Me being more sidelined into bikes, the scooters aren't my cup of tea at all.
I am being scolded by my parents for a biking decision and the most common point from them is bikes aren't safer for pregnant ladies and whenever my father tries to board as the pillion on my bike, he simply cusses me for buying a bike over a scooter ( I own a RTR 200). My Mother doesn't board the bike at all and her favorite would be ladies cant board your bike and simply you should have made an informed decision of buying the bike with your wife in picture. My wife doesn't complain on the bike but she agrees to the common point that it isn't safer for pregnant ladies. My only losing war comment to this is no 2-wheeler is safe for pregnant ladies period. Amidst all this family rant the scooter picture just peeped in to my head and Hence this rant.
So yes folks please chip in your favorite, Motorbike or a scooter. Also Feel free to correct me on the more biased bike favoring rant of me.
