  • [Photo Feature]: Riding gears saved my life

Couple of days back Fireblah, Ani, Sagar and me had a small tour. We were riding through a village road on the bank of river damoder in Burdwan district. The road was full of pebbles.

    A picture of the road.
    (Pic courtesy- Ani)

I was leading the whole ride. But at this particular time I took some time to wear my gloves and helmet and asked Sagar to lead. Fireblah was following him. I was riding in the third position. We were doing 30-35kmph at that time.

Just before the accident. (Pic courtesy- Ani)

Me riding through the village one minute before the crash. (Pic courtesy- Ani)

While crusing through a village I saw a little goat taking rest at least 4 feet away from the road. Sagar Went passed the goat. It didn't move a single inch. Just when the Fireblade passed the goat (may be the sound of inline 4 made it nervous) it jumped right in front of my front tire from right side of the road. I didn't apply panic braking but due to the force of the goat hitting my front tire in a village road full of pebbles I hit the ground hard and slided couple of feet.

Thanks to my riding gears. I didn't have a single scratch in my whole body but the riding gears took all the beating. Bike also had scratch in the total left side.

My knee gurad after the crash.

    Visor scratched

    Right glove

    Left glove

    T Shirt

    Elbow guard

Left rear panel of the bike

    Front fairing

    Gear lever bent

    Front fairing cracked

    Scratches on the indicator

Even after all these,I didn't have a single scratch on me. Thanks to my riding gears. All of them were scratched more or less. Just imagine my condition without all these riding gears. Anyway, I again lead the convoy and rode back 90km to my home.

Glad to see you are OK Jonak. And a perfect example as to why you should wear riding gears!

@Jonak: You should also consider investing in a riding jacket (maze to beat the heat).

          hey jonak,

looks like you'd have had a serious injury without these riding gears. All thanks to them.

and also as others mentioned opt for a riding jacket sometime soon.

These things actually help others in learning the importance of riding gears.

          Good luck for your future.....

            Thanks for quick approval sir.
Yes, I am planning to buy one for a long time now. But in Kolkata neither cramster nor DSG is available. I guess I have to order it online only.

                  @Jonak :

BTW, I went to Cramster store this Saturday and tried the Breezer 2.0 jacket on. Its very light and fits pretty well. In fact I think the elbow guard has been elongated till 2-3 inches before the wrists. Its got external padding at elbow and shoulders, so one can even wear it without the guards !!

Only thing is, it doesn't have elastics at the waist, so it doesn't cling to the waist to give a v-shape but fall vertical. They said, that was to enhance breathability !!

Also I talked to the owner of the place Keerthi, and he agreed to sort of set up a stall in Kolkatta or something, so that Kol customers can try on the jackets before buying.

So if you guys can let me kno, if some expo and exhibition or bike event or something happening in Kolkatta, then I'll pass the info to him and perhaps he can put up a stall. It'll also help if he can get a rough estimate of what general sizes might be needed. No guarentee of purchase tho !

ad lastly, hope u r okay. Get well soon mate !!

Yes, riding gear is essential, be it any weather. I shudder to think what could have happened to you when I see the scratches on your protection!

I bought Cramster stuff over the phone. They are pretty good. Buy yourself a Mesh jacket with CE certified armour. I had sent one such jacket to Calcutta to Simba. Don't know if you know him.
The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!

Absolutely agreed to what Ken Da said, Just today I had a nasty crash and I am perhaps alive because of the gear I wear....

I would strongly advice you to get a good Jacket soon, I am sure Cramster does ship its product... althought the fitting is not something to boast about for both cramster and DSG, but they are better than not havin anythin on!

I have a Shift Mesh jacket, and a Fieldsheer Textile jacket,

I think I will go for a Maze now! or may be if any of my friends coming from the US of A, then give them a small parcel to carry to India
