so u gusz r saying that if we change the gears at 8k rpm we get more power.
So in all the gears from 1 -4 we need to change it at 8k rpm to get good accelaration?.
does,nt hammering like this ruin the bike .
    SPEED .....i need more
I cannot do burnouts :(..my bike has traction control...

one more thing forgot to say for better mileage ,what i do is by the time i hit 50 kmph ,i will be in 5th gear ...dont cross more that 80 kmph and u can get a decent mileage..
      me always 80+ ...43+kmpl .

@nfsnfs : changin at 8k+ depends on which bike u have. eg: its diff for a bullet and a splendor
        yup,for milage , i keep my zma b/w 3500-4500 rpm n get app 38-40 in city

theres no fixed norm for either shifting up or shifting down......it all depends on what ur riding for...more mileage, or more power.!!! if ur gunning for mileage make it a point to upshift at low rpms (not too low, or u end up screwing up the clutch plates)......if ur accelerating hard, take the rev count really high up and then upshift....helps reap the meatier parts of the power band......how high u need to rev depends upon the condition of ur bike and obviously, which bike ur riding. if u check out any clips on the net which show the tacho while sumone's really ridin fast, u'll see that they shift right at the redline. even in F1 races, they show the tacho of the car on the bottom left corner of the screen in some shots, u'll see that the revs are taken right up to the redline.

downshifting.....lotsa techniques that can be used here. first ...the mileage technique.....brake in high gear while slowing down and after ur at the reqd speed, downshift to the reqd gear according to engine speed, and road speed....comes with experience.
engine braking : an alternative for applying ur brakes too hard...downshift and let the engine brake the vehicle......not a very recommended practice as it increase load on the engine.

overtaking....very important to be aware of the rpm u are at...n i dont mean keep lookin at the tacho.....listen to ur ride.....if needed, downshift right before the moment u accelerate and zoom past the vehicle ur overtaking.....PLEASE PLAN UR MOVE BEFORE HAND TO AVOID ANY MISHAPS !!!

all this with personal riding experience....tips always welcome

down-shifting : one can do it w/o using the clutch. jus practice and if u get it right , u will start enjoyin it.. u gotta blip the throttle jus b4 down-shifting.. like-wise clutch less upshifts r also possible and if u get it right too , u will love it.. no jerks and stuff..

whoa !!! wont that screw up the clutch plate ?!? what happens when we blip the throttle b4 downshifting or upshifting ?

4 strokes have greater engine breaking so its a good idea to blip the trottle a fraction of a sec before u downshift especially when racing, this will get the clutch up to match the engine speed so that when u downshift there is less load / wear on the clutch. If you time it perfectly you will experience less of a jerk and a smoother downshift. Same applies for 2 strokes but this is more effective in 4 strokes, however i wouldnt call this a clutchless downshift coz u have to pull the clutch to make the blip.

As for gear shifting technique, i think some of the members said it when they say its ur gut feel. Personally thats what i use, when you've ripped bikes enuff you get to know when a bike makes max power in each gear and this does not necessarily mean you rev it to the redline (on stock bikes, drag bikes are usually revved past the redline ). You can feel it when the bike has done all it can do in a particular gear and isnt accelerating at the same rate anymore (it may still rev out though), that is the point you need to upshift and you have to be lightning quick..I personally use powershifting on all the bikes i drag including 4 stroke, however its not that easy to do on a RD unless the gearox is in super shape...hope this helps

for mileage its best to shift gears btw - 3500-4500RPM
for speed like said earlier listen to ur engine at change when u can get max efficiency of your engine ..
for upshift normally i use to clutch but while racin slipping gears i.e changing gears without much decrease in the RPM just snap the clutch n change the gear to get better pick up...
for downshift i use blip the throttle a bit n just shift thats the best way according to me
while braking suddenly TORSION shud be used but that will screw the engine a bit but sometimes u have to do it i.e if u r in the 3rd gear n u r on 50 u shift to a lower gear n there is a load on the engine n the speed decreases dont forget to leave the throttle otherwise the bike will surely jump to get more acceleration
i dont like to redline my bike like someone said earlier the F1 cars n the Skbs riders do that but dont forget we ride indian bikes and our engines cannot take that much of load...

@ace: hell yea! ask us what split seconds mean... esp me who got saved from the mishap!!

ocatane's idea of clutchless shifting while racing really really helps... saves me 500 millisec each gear which is a lot! and is very effortless.

                                7k is purrfect for zma.

                                peace.
