Saying the R15 outdated is not fair, i agree the bike is launched 1 and 1/2 year ago, but till that there is no bike in india in the 150 cc segment to compete it in terms of performance or features, the bike is again a breed apart and again its being supported with a title like yamaha, and above all how many indian manufactures including honda, bajaj or any other two wheelers can give you all the comforts that people expect from a bike that too with a 150cc liquid cooled engine, we have bikes like karizma and enfield in the upper segments but again they all are also air cooled ones, and again the ninja is a 250 cc with all features on a upper segment so its like comparing a maruti zen with a SX4 which i feel is unfair.

So it seems here that the thread starter has got his facts wrong. I read somewhere that there are no free services on Ninja. Considering those costs, can we come to a more accurate figure for perspective buyers.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

So you will never buy anything because a better product will be "replacing" it at a later date ?

You wont buy a Ninja cause KTM or Hyosungs will replace them. You wont buy KTM or Hyosungs cause Harley Davidsons and BMWs will replace them. You wont buy Harleys and BMWs cause Alien Technology will replace them?
You see where this is going ?

Its a flawed logic and has never worked even for the electronics/computer industry where the lifespan of a product is the shortest ever ! Your laptops become obsolete literally within 4 to 5 months and yet you go buy them.

Waiting for a new bike without buying the latest available in market is like waiting for the waves to stop to take bath in the sea!.

Here in this forum someone's signature goes like this "Biking is not a passion...its a way of life".

People who are spending lakhs of rupees on bikes have their life in it!.

If that is the case , we need not bother about the money or monthly expense etc.

After all, it is cheaper to remain as a bachelor rather than marrying!
But who cares.....!! Biking is like that!

Boy, have i enjoyed reading this thread? Goes to show how many people on Xbhp are reeeaaallllyyyy passionate about biking. It was genuinely heartening to see so many people respond to this thread starter with the justification of a Genuine Biker's Heart. After all, like most of you have said, if you want it you will buy it, let money and running costs be damned!!!

Here is a toast to the Biker's Spirit in all of you!!!

Escept the outadated part the topic makes perfect sense. It would have been more apt with the title: "Cost of Owning a Dream".

As far as the price is concerned I implore everyone to understand that the bikes we get in India are VERY cheap (except the higher CC ones - R1, 1000RR) and we shoukd feel lucky.

A bike like the ZMA will cost nothing less than 2,50,000 Lakhs on road here. But then the higher end bikes, a new Blade will only cost 7.5 Lakhs on road (against the 13 lakhs in India).

The Ninja could not be more aptly priced though.

                        bikes becoming obsolete........

we in India are still a little unfortunate compared to our western friends regarding choice of motorcycles. for us there is no choice till today and you have to take what is there. you bought the R-15 cause that's the only bike with top power. there are no other bikes for the same specs. suppose there are 5 other bikes with the same specs as r-15, well then u have a choice. now we have only ninja. now another 5 bikes of the same specs come to india well then we have a choice to pick up a bike to our complete liking and budget. you picked up a karizma cause there was no r-15, u took r-15 as there was no ninja, so this is how things become obsolete for us in india. note that for car's we almost on par with the west on choice. you choose what u want at your budget. this story has to repeat for our bikes in the 200 cc + category. till then ...

i somewhat agree but beggars are not choosers....our country lacks a lot of road sense and roads itself for high speed bikes. As far as car is concerned i guess its more of govt policy many car companies setup up unit here and export from here which is not the case with most high end bikes like ninja, for eg Hyundai first small car ever made was santro and it was made for india and from india now its exported worlwide. We can expect more competition and better bikes only if biggies setup a plant here...

@harikeshpk - the right bikes sell priced as much or slightly higher than their counterparts abroad. IF you consider the R15, it is superior to the version sold abroad, and is slightly higher priced here. With an engine that comes imported and has no major issues, i think the price is right.

The other pricing for higher cc bikes is skewered for two main reasons - Duty and sales.

India is a volume driven two wheeler market, where two wheelers are sold as a means of transport and not recreation, as is the case abroad. Simple. hence terms like fun/thrill of riding/performance etc are lost out to Price of the bike/Mileage.

Thats the indian mentality, even you will see a hayabusa on the road, your first question will be, "kitne ki hai?" ( how much ), and second will be "average kya hai? "

Trust me, im sure a number of people would agree to this. This mentality and though process will anyday find it hard to put down 3 lakh rupees for a ninja, but for an enthusiast or bike lover riding it for the thrill and not to get from point A to B, he will enjoy each and every rupee spent on the bike.

I some how liked reading throgh every single post in this thread. A lot of differrent opinions with their own justifications.

From a future owners point of view (might just grab the baby in coming march), can some one shed lights on factors like how much exactly do i need to spend on a monthly basis ?

For example, let me say I make a downpayment of 1.5 Lakhs and remaining loan (I stay in hyderabad, not yet sure of on-road price here).

How much would be the Emi and coming to maintenance,

I desperately needs to know the cost of spare parts for the ninja. Some one please post prices of as many parts as possible. (owned two karizmas in the past, considering they are of best quality i often had to change spare parts within a matter of months)

I am pretty sure there are no free services, so how much does one needs to shed out every time we walk in for refreshments?

Overall, need a report card on after purchase expenses
