  • [Hard Torque]: Definition of a Biker

Nobody is defined as a Biker; the Biker is just a part of you which defines your whole persona as a Individual. And I know that this is hard to digest for many of us, believe me I found it stupid when my father first told me this when I sneaked out to a G2G for the first time and got caught. But as time progressed I would at times say to people that I was a Biker; and when told this they found it incongruent to the conversation and thought I was desperately trying to seek out attention. This I later realized this myself, when I heard a 12 year old talking to me the same way I did to others. But during the course of a conversation when it became evident that I was a step above when it came to my bike and biking, they became curious about that little part of my life and I could see that they were analyzing me as a person with this one little info. And that is where you stand apart a mile from the mundane crowd, and it was for this reason that I loved what I did so much, the more subtle your biker side is the more attention it draws, and they have their own perks with the fairer sex, but that isn’t what this is all about. The Biker persona portrays a very fiercely independent figure in the minds of people, they think you are a rebel and you are your own master and that is what is generally thought of Bikers as usual, a misguided off-shoot of the same opinion is the one where people think of us as anti-social elements because again we are not following any “moral” rules they assign for themselves and others. And that is how it is portrayed in films also, as a negative side, they show bikers as an unruly group of leather-clad hooligans moving about town wrecking havoc and as a positive side to the coin they show heroes who ride alone and mysterious striking the whole town with awe or something in the similar vein. Therefore all these examples confirm that Bikers are by nature Independent beings who shoot straight from the hip.

It is not just the social side of it that makes us unique, even when you ride amongst a group of like minded fellows you (or at least me) feel privileged to be in the company of few who happen to think along the same lines as you do. And this immediate sense of fraternity bonds you with the group, you are enriched as a person in their company just like how a set of good circle of friends thinking along the same wavelength enrich your experience with them. And when you resume your daily routine after all this, you fell refreshed and invigorated at a new experience even though it is all very predictable, but that is how the human psyche works we are comforted by the predictability and enjoy subtle surprises along the way. Therefore you look forward until the next time you are lucky enough to undergo the same experience. I have felt many a times that my outlook on certain things as a person changed when I started to take more interest biking, I got to met a whole lot of people like me, from whom I could learn and teach. I learnt that shedding your inhibitions of meeting strangers, would reap enormous rewards in terms of listening to their experience and knowledge which I could pass onto others. And it was never only about bikes or biking, I learnt a lot about a lot of things which I wouldn’t have even had the slightest idea had I heard about them before. I learnt that letting people laugh at you made you laugh with them, and I was no longer shying away from people like I used to.

This new experiences came to me only when I started biking for which I’m thankful. I would not go as far as to say I’m a totally changed person, because there some aspects about my biking which became a thing of worry for my parents, what with their conservatism my care-a-damn attitude was scaring them. This again taught me that I need to be responsible with what I do and how I do it. So , it’s about the biker in your character as a person which plays a vital role

Very nice stuff there man, came in as a surprise.

I have had a zillion invitation to street drags and what not whenever I ride. This is perhaps this 'illusion' of 'people' being 'bikers' and 'bikers' being 'hooligans', 'racers', 'stunters' and what not.... Just the other day, I was thrown off by a fellow rider (on a P220) cutting into my track purposely. I was sane enough to not take the bait.... I continued riding infact as fast as I always do, not bothered by this new found nuisance.. and my dear friend there trying to pep me up for a drag... I ensured I would not go ahead of him and so was right there on his RVMs. When he dropped to 100, I was there right behind, when he droped to 80, I was still there right behind... and in frustration he dropped to 50KMPH and there I was still behind him....

A few KMs ahead, he narrowly cutted another guy on a P200... at a signal ahead, the P200 guy appreciated my jacket, and suggested that he is looking for one too... The P220 guy again came from nowhere and zipped past... the P200 guy took the bait... and they both merrily dragged on a busy city street, and then people were busy hurling abuses to them and me!... for them all of us were 'bikers' - a dreadfull disease...

          ............and some more

Once someone asked me a really dumb question,”If you were to choose between your bike and a beautiful girl, which would you choose?” and I replied “I would have to go with the girl”.
But the question got me thinking, if I were to come to a juncture where I would have to put my helmet on the stand to rest a while would I do it? If I had to choose between my passion and necessity, could I bring myself to choose the necessity without regretting the decision? Then I, after pondering for great deal of time found my solution to the problem I was facing. My passion been so hard-wired into my system that it literally became a second nature to me, if someone were to wake me up in the middle of the night and ask me to sit on a bike and ride non-stop I would only happily oblige. You don’t go dumb just because you stopped speaking to people; I consider my biking to be on par with that level. I have that much confidence in me if I say so myself, that I can not touch a bike for a good year then sit on a bike and start from where I left off. As I said in the thread starter the biking is part of you, and yes it can get rusty sometimes but no one on earth can take it away from you. And that comes only with the realization of how you relate with your biker side.
And this realization was what boosted my confidence after I had been down in the dumps after a major crash on my bike. It is not the bike that matters after all its a few nuts and bolts put together (as I keep repeating this again and again) its always the rider who makes the difference, no matter how many fast bikes come your bike for you will be the best because only you can relate to it on an intimate level. As I keep writing this I can’t help but noticing how all this closely resembles our relationship with people around us. The bike is not a person but is merely a mirror of yourself, if you closely notice you can see that your bike reflects upon yourself. If you’ve been tired or frustrated the bike may look dirty and might have that “mysterious” niggle that is almost impossible to eliminate, but once your mood changes for the sunnier side you don’t find anything wrong with the bike rather it only too happily obliges to your whims. So let there be faster better bikes and bikers, I’ll still be a biker because I ride and that’s all that matters

really good write up.cheers for you...The thing that makes biking so involving is that,we feel as if the bike is a extension of ourselves. When I feel angry or sad,I go to an empty stretch of road and ride with all the rage I possibly have until I'm satisfied. When I'm happy,I just let the bike putter for me...It's this involvement with the machine that everyone here is after. The feeling of someone being with you always,no matter what happens ...and that, many people don't understand and have an image of irresponsible guys wasting precious fuel whenever the word "biker" comes up due to some really irresponsible fellas riding their steeds as if they own the road...
It all begins with a thumb-start -- Oh, wait, I forgot the kill-switch
