KARIZMA Cold Start issue.

    KARIZMA Cold Start issue.

    Now i seriously need some expert advice here......now since the community is the best source for biking in india.......i feel my problem would sure be solved. XBHP ROCKS.


    i own a 2009 ZMA-R, currently done 8000 km. from the day one of purchase of this bike i am facing cold start issue. in short the bike doesn't start without giving choke even in month of july, delhi heat it requires choke to start the bike.

    i checked the spark plug color and it is dark brown which seems ok to me.

    my other neighbor starts there bike without choke and the throttle is crisp.[bikes are p180, yamaha fz and gladiator]

    though once the engine is heated up it requires just a little notch of starter and she fires.

    in the manual it is written that "open the throttle slightly and press the starter" - when i do so the bike doesn't start but just the starter operate as if there is no fuel in the bike [the petrol is full though]

    svc guys sucks as they say it is common[i told it is bearable in winters but im sure it is not ok for hot summers at least]

    please provide some vivid help and help me to solve my problem.

          Get AFR and idling screw adjusted. But AFAIK using choke for cold starts is not at all a bad thing. The P135 has a automatic choke that kicks in at every cold start. So if they installed it as an automatic thing, then using choke is not at all harmful to the engine. its normal

            I ain't expert at these

            u can give a try this

            # try kick starting the bike by keeping on main stand and with initial kicks without turning on the ignition

              1) your AFR is out of place..in summers you don't need choke to start the bike..and when the bike heats up,it runs fine which means that the mixture is lean..
              2)also if the idling rpm is set too low, which is the case if you asked the svc guy for mileage tuning, then too the engine requires choke while cold starting..so one of two above mentioned cases match your problem

                Make sure that your tank breather tube(so called by SVC people) is not folded or compressed, even i had the same problem with my zma r and was due to the above reason(as mentioned by the svc)
                The particular tube was compressed between the tank and frame.

                Open the fuel cap for a while and start your bike if culprit is the breathes tube , then this will work

                Check your carb with some good mech, if necessary clean it, and set the AFR properly

                Make sure that the rubber seal around the fuel cap is intact, water content in the tank can cause starting issues

                Heard that Using iridium Plugs will reduce the cold start issues in zma but haven't used one so cant comment..

                  I too own a 2009 ZMA and had this same issue which is now resolved

                  Things to do

                  1. Use choke to start.
                  2. Use kick start during cold start.
                  3. tune and set AFR properly.
                  4. change spark plug to iridium.
                  5.open and close tank lid if still bike does not start.

                  Things not to do

                  1.Do not press the starter continuously thinking that bike will start.
                  2.Do not keep the choke on for a long time.
                  3.Do not set the AFR while engine is cold.
                  4.Do not immediately accelerate to higher rpms wait atleast for a 2-3 mins.

                    use choke halfway down and press the starter,, no need to adjust AFR if you aren't an expert.

                      did you have a low idling rpm..coz i guess that's the main reason

                        If your bike has behaved that way since day one, and is running otherwise fine, then maybe there's nothing to worry about. I've had bikes that needed more choke than others to warm up, winter and summer. If yours is still stock, you haven't modified anything, your mixture and idle screws are correctly set, then it might just be how your bike is...
                        Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make all of them yourself.

                          I think there might be problem in AFR setting..!!
                          Though I have never faced this problem ever. Just once somewhere a year back, faced for a while, but the culprit was battery. After changing it everything is fine. I dont even remember the last time, I tried kick starting it. Even in sub-zero temperature, button start just worked fine. Choke used quiet rarely. If this problem for you is from the day you purchased it, please escalate the issue. Else get hold of a good mechanic around (fellow xbhp members can help you to locate a good mech near your area) & he should be able to get everything perfect. SVC is of no use, I stopped it since last 2 years.

                            Hi bro,

                            Even my bike has an issue, but its not on cold start. It is on heat up. When I go to some traffic area, where gear shift is between 1st n 2nd only, the engine gets heat up n it stops in the middle, and on cooling it for 5-10 min, it again starts up. This issue has started around six to eight months back.
                            i have even changed the CDI for this but still facing the issue, and its really embarassing.
                            A few days back I opened the carburetor myself n found some wax kind of gel at the base, is it because of that or the air filter issue?

                            Please guide me on this , what might be the problem.

                              I was having the same problem from last one week after I installed K&N air filter.. It took many tries to start the bike, even with the choke ON, the bike couldnt start.. I tried to tune the idling screw and set the idling to just above 1000 rpm.. and last night I didnt turn the pertol off.. Guess what, today morning I didnt even use the choke and with just a single click... the engine came to life...lol..
