  • GPS on high-end compatible Nokia devices

Hi guys, I'v been to atleast 5-6 one/two day trips since last few months, each of them spanning more then 400-500 kms withing maharashtra & everything seems to be in perfect sense except my navigational skills so far. I often tour solo or with 1-2 additional bikers who are not much experienced then I am, hence the need of some external navigational help is highly required for future rides in order to save myself from getting lost often & riding 20-30 kms in wrong directions a couple of times.

I have a Nokia N85 which has GPS & Maps but I'm not able to figure out how to get it to work. Sure I know to use the Nokia maps perfectly when I'm in home network & have GPRS connectivity but most of the times when I require the navigation from Nokia maps, i have no network/GPRS so cant check out Nokia maps for directions.
I'v read in several TOURER threads about experienced riders using their nokia N95's etc to navigate via GPS in tough terrain where no local assistance was available & I tried google but did'nt get perfect solution to get GPS on my N85 working. So please anyone with the knowledge in this area is requested to give their inputs.

PS: If there is absolutely no way of getting my nokia GPS to work, I may definitely look forward to other handheld GPS devices as it is an absolute must have for me but I want to try out this option first if possible.

@Mods: I searched for a similar thread but could not find one, hence the new thread. Feel free to merge it with any similar thread or other section as per your opinion.

    Thanks.

Google maps require GPRS connection to browse through the maps & there is very little possibility of getting GPRS connection when we tour outside the home network.

You can use OVI Maps (New name for Nokia MAPS).
Download OVI Suite on your PC and it comes with Maploader utility for most of Nokia devices.

On my Nokia 5800, I have installed maps for Hyderabad and london which have very good details information with voice navigation. I think same can be done on N85 also.

But..As far as I know Nokia Maps, Google Maps and OVI Maps have details information of roads and streets only for cities. Where as out side cities you might only get roads etc.

MAy be loading multiple city maps on the mobile would give the linkage between them.

I have been using OVI Maps without any GPRS connection for navigation in cities. You would be highlighted as Red dot in OVI maps and Blue dot in Google maps. So logically no GPRS connection is required when you have active GPS and loaded map with you, as you can find your self on the map and the directions.

Again, you might not get detailed maps once outside the city. And you dont require GPRS connection once you have a good map loaded and you have been identified by GPS.

EDIT: Google maps require GPRS even for cities I belive, Where as its not usually required for OVI/Nokia Maps.
Make sure you turn of Assisted GPS incase GPRS usage is not free to you.

Hi bro, I just installed Ovi suite yesterday & tried to download India map as available for my Nokia N85 but could not get it downloaded. I dont know what the problem was but its not getting downloaded on my laptop. Can we download the offline nokia Ovi maps on some other PC & then get it installed on my phone later?? I mean are these downloaded maps freely transferable like normal data files?

I'v been using G-maps but u r right it needs prolonged GPRS for detailed maps & GPRS is rare in remote areas so we have to use the cached maps outside cities if any..
Anyways u have nearly clarified my GPS problem & i just want to know if any additional settings are required in my GPS application once i get those offline nokia maps or I'm just good to go once i get the maps downloaded??

I am using Ovi Maps, Google Maps and Yahoo Maps on my Nokia 5230.

Ovi maps works offline and comes preloaded. You just need a sis file which is approx 10MB which installs complete maps.

                        Google maps works only online.

Prajwal Kashyap had downloaded South India Maps which I copied from him. I am using that tagged with MGMAPS which works fine with GPS on Yahoo Maps.

Using OVI maps I get voice assisted navigation but that doesn't work with Yahoo and Google maps.

Ovi lacks detailing. Google better than Ovi but Yahoo is too good in detailing.

                          OVI Suite behave bizzare sometimes.
But its works at end. Make sure you have connected the Mobile to your laptop while the Maploader utility is running.
Each map is around 100mb+, so they take time.

We can do offline also, but that requires some config changes and proper placement of map files, which I am not much aware of.

I havent used GRAMIN, but heard that its good.

But at the end, nothing works like the hard copy of a map. Trust me.

Yes dude my laptop was well connected with me cell & I got All countries maps options as follows
3.2 gb - Whole world maps,
Asia maps - Around 422 mb
But India Map - Only 22 mb so I tried downloading but even after waiting for atleast 10 15 min after clicking on download, the download did not really start so I killed the application.

PS: Yes No doubt the age old physical maps are still the most relaible source of guidance

I didn't download the OVI to my laptop. To put in other words, my handset came pre-equipped with OVI and probably it was an update file which was 10MB. And I used the GPRS directly to update.

Yahoo maps which I have is around 300MB for South India and the level of zoom is not full but sufficient for needs. Yes and the detailing is too good. Where as the yahoo maps online isn't user friendly as google maps
