Pulsar timing is 10 degree BTDC @ 1,500 RPM and 28 degrees BTDC @ 3,500 RPM.

This is when the magnet is just leaving the reed switch active area. This is the threshold for increasing advance. The 28 degree advance is at 3,500 RPM..about mid throttle position.

This is when the magnet no longer has any field to keep the reed switch on...this is full throttle position. Hope the info is useful.

Seems to me like a choked air filter..that's what happens when the filter's choked, the bike shoots in a certain rpm range..if it's not, then the next likely cause is worn out valves..

Thanks PSR and Thanks to the original up-loader. The workshop manual is very informative.
Though the details of the two different timing maps are not given. Hats off to the Bajaj guys, they are really trying some new innovative stuff. It would be nice if they could come with a twin cylinder, 8 valve design.

If they did that they would kill all present manufacturers..and their own present range too.. As usual the initial customers will be the Guinea pigs .I heard rumors that they are working on a 4 valves head for the rest of the Pulsar series.Hope rumors turn out to be true in the near future.

@psr: I will also check whether reed switch is functioning. Is there a possibility that instead of reed switch/sensor, magnet (mounted on carb) is faulty?

@shubhankar: choked air filter is not a possibility, I get it cleaned every 2500 kms, and if valves a re worn out, engine will be consuming oil and give smoky exhaust.

can it be a case of air leaking from somewhere like hose pipe of filter. so engine is sucking air from outside instead of through filter and teh engine is running excessively lean. is there a chance that this is the problem?

Very unlikely as i have run my bikes without air filters and i never had such problem. We cant totally rule out carb. But easiest would be to check the reed swith first.

Just remove the connection to the Reed switch and start..it should be difficult to start and if it does will be rough at lower rpm...becoming very smooth to accelerate at 3,000 rpm and beyond. If it is so your reed switch and or connection is Kaput. If it is not then look elsewhere for probs.

if you can come down to nigdi, in pune, please meet chinmay dangre. he can maybe help you out. when my bike got this problem, it turned out to be a faulty carburettor and needle. he is a tuner and can hence help you out in this regards.

if you are intrested in meeting him, i will put you a pm with his contact number. but this guy is sort of a very busy person so you will have to ask for an appointment before you can meet him.

Yes the re are two white coloured capacitors used for the Capacitor Discharge Ignition. The capacitors are connected to the spark plugs.

I think you are referring to the Ignition coil
