  • Problems to be resolved in RTR 160

Guys need your expert help in solving a few niggles with my bike, which have been troubling me big time for the past few months.I ride an Apache RTR 160 with 16,000 kms on the ODO. I ride fast and rev hard.

    Problem 1 :

I have found oil leaking from the bottom of my engine everyday, like 10-12 drops everyday. On my previous trip when i was changing the engine oil,the ASC guy has told me that the nut to which the drain bolt's screwed, has its threads worn out and asked me to replace it. Now i have a doubt here.Isnt the nut whose threads are worn out,a part of the whole engine block or is it available separately.

    Problem 2 :

The Bike's battery is discharging every night and it the self start fails to work in the morning.I have to kick start it everyday and after a few kms ,the battery gets recharged and if i leave it for more than 7-8 hours in idle, the battery discharges again. What might be the exact cause of the problem. This has been happening for the past 1 month.

    Problem 3 :

My chain sprockets have worn out after around 12000 kms and i had to replace the entire kit.I have searched a lot of ASC's and the spares weren't available in this place. So i settled with a Chain sprocket kit from an automobile shop wherein it was mentioned " for Apache RTR 160 ".Bought this for 750 bucks and got it changed.Later on i found out that i was ignorant enough to check whether it was an O-Ring chain or not.Wel it turned out it wasn't.No wonder it was cheap. Now i am running on that for the past 5k kms and it needs to be frequently oiled. Should i change it with the OEM spares ,if so how much does the kit cost ?

    Problem 4 :

I have had a lot of misfiring issues both in the lower and higher RPM's. Should in go in for new spark plugs and get carb cleaned and tuned ?I ve noticed a reduction in the mileage and the pick up in the lower RPM's consistently for the past 3000 kms. This has been troubling me a lot.

    Problem 5 :

The rubber washers at the joint of rear shocks and the chassis ,have become hard and developed cracks. Are they available as spares ? And if possible does anyone have the spares list for RTR 160 with prices, cause that would be a godsend for me. Because some ASC's here claim some parts are not available as spares. I was expecting each and every nut, bolt & washer to be available as OEM spares. I wouldn mind spending a few hundred bucks extra for the original ones.

    Problem 6 :

The bike sounds like a loose bag of nuts & bolts when i am riding it. It doesn feel firm and in one piece like it used to be a year back when i bought it.Hardly 16000 kms later, all the parts are loose and falling off. Is it a regular issue with TVS bikes or is it because i ride hard. And these sounds are specifically form the dome area, where i am suspecting a few fallen screws ,the fork's tightness and the cone set which they changed at 5000 kms and under warranty. When i am cross small bumps and ditches in the road, there's a huge "dhak" sound form the rear and that freaks me out. I cant seem to find the exact problem at the rear.

Can someone can please please point out the exact issues and also suggest the best ASC for all this work either in Chennai or Hyderabad.I will be moving to hyderabad via chennai in a week's time. Your expert opinions are most needed and appreciated.

Does anyone have the spares catalogue, where can i find it.?

Your battery is dead! You have to change it. If it is under warranty, ask for a replacement.

Probably your rear shocks have gone too. Thus the "Dhak" sound over ditches.

I will leave the rest to the RTR specialists.

Problem1: Drain Bolt is available seperately in almost all the bikes.

Problem2: battery needs replacement. go to a battery shop, tell them to check the gravity and top up with water accordingly and recharge. you may be able to use it for some more time.

Problem3: its your choice, oil it frequently and use it for as long as it lasts then change.

      Problem4: Problem not clear.

Problem5: dismantle your rear shocks and see if the rubber washers are a seperate part, it should be available. btw, are the cracked ones giving any problem.

Problem6: may be your rear shocks have worn out or there may someother thing which is loose

Ken ill get the battery changed no its not under warranty . What might be the cause of battery goin kaput with 16k on the odo.
The rear shocks are on the hardest setting. That might be a problem ? And how can the shocks fail. As far as i know gas filled shocks are a closed system. So probably a leakage ? Or what exactly do you mean by shocks are gone

The problem is not the bolt, the ASC guy was talking about the part of the engine where you screw in the bolt.

Problem2: battery needs replacement. go to a battery shop, tell them to check the gravity and top up with water accordingly and recharge. you may be able to use it for some more time.

Should i go in for the same make of battery which came in with the bike or any cheaper/better alternatives .?

Problem3: its your choice, oil it frequently and use it for as long as it lasts then change.

Any idea how much the OEM chain sprocket kit costs?

          Problem4: Problem not clear.

Well its a case of misfiring,i did not phrase it properly. But misfiring, drop in mileage and pickup. So what could have gone wrong? as the bike has clocked 16k kms, should i change the spark plug.what is the change interval for this part.

Problem5: dismantle your rear shocks and see if the rubber washers are a separate part, it should be available. btw, are the cracked ones giving any problem.

I cant dismantle them but i can clearly make out that they are a separate part.

Problem6: may be your rear shocks have worn out or there may some other thing which is loose

Yeah,so i am not able to figure out which part it is i am going nuts trying to find out whats wrong.
Any idea how much the front disk assembly costs?

Problem 2 - battery might need topping up , rtr battery is not a sealed one .

roblem 4 - change the spark plug if it has never been changed and the air filter as it gets clogged up over time . the sponge type air filter also needs to be oiled up a bit with some thin oil .

problem 6 - there are three screws that hold the front dome so make sure they are not loose . also theres a small sponge piece where speedo touches the front dome . if its missing it makes noise from vibrations .

for best hyderabad SVC ask xbhpian onlinesatish , he also has a rtr .

The drain nut and a base plate has to be changed, its a common problem in older stocks (like mine) if you get the part, do buy an extra pair for me too.
This is one of the many changes in the Newer RTRs

Stick to it till it dies, you will any way get the chain sprocket as OEM.
You said o ring chain? Which version of RTR do you have? Do you have a chain cover?

              Problem 4 :

Both, also clean your air filter (and replace if necesary)

It should be the stand touching the chain cover if you have it.
For the front you need to simply put the stock washers before you fix them for good. The rattle could also happen from the tank which you can use a tank bush (a small rubber patch before mounting the tank on the bike)

You should tighten the engine manifold too

I have an RTR 160 Refresh 2009 model.Yes they come with an O ring chain and an open chain guard, which i failed to realise while buying a new one.My bad.

                Problem 4 :

Will the ASC guys do the tuning properly? So i will have to change spark plugs.

Yes satyen,i do need them. The rubber compound has dried and cracked.

                Problem 6 :

The bike sounds like a loose bag of nuts & bolts when i am riding it. Mine does not have a chain cover.I suspect the stand too.will check it up.What s engine manifold by the way? And do i have to change the timing chain and tensioner cos i can hear some noise while the engine is in idle. ASC guy told me its the timing chain.

yes sealed ones dont require periodic topping up with distilled water . amaron ones are good and also come with a long warranty . im still though using original one which came with my bike .

I ve checked out the amaron website and found that they have a series of batteries for 2 wheelers. Which model should i go for, 5AH or 9AH. RTR Self start is not listed in this selection page.

Is anyone using the amaron series in their steeds. Is it reliable and is it a direct ft on the RTR?

                            1. Its common. Had changed mine twice. It should cost around 100rs.

                            2. Get i recharged. if it still dies out and if you still on warrenty peroid for the battery, then claim warrenty. Else get a new one. Am using Amaron 9amp MF battery. Got it for 1450rs. COmes with a 5yr warrenty.

                            3. If you do not have a problem with it, then why change it? just oil it frequently and use it. Am runnin on open chain with a non O ring chain too

                            4. +1 to satyen and also get it checked @ SVC

                            5. AFAIK, TVS dont sell them as spare part. If you find one, let me know. Mine have craked abt 30k kms back

                            6. RTR eninge are generally noisy. But do get it checked with SVC. and check if the Tool bag if fitted properly.
