  • Pulsar 220 Chain Lube

Hi! Going through all the posts on P220s maintenance, I see that most guys recommend an SAE 90 gear oil for lubricating the chain. However, I came across a Motul SAE 140 gear oil at a lube shop, which the guy recommened over the Castrol SAE 90. Has anyone used this SAE 140 lube? I've got the lube, but want to be doubly sure before I use it!!

    Query Approved.

The SAE 90 grade oil works perfectly on the Pulsar's O-Ring chains. I had a real good experience of using the 90 grade Castrol gear oil on the drive-chain of the P200 which I had. It worked perfectly.

I would personally recommend you stick to the grade of chain lube recommended by the manufacturer (in this case the SAE 90 grade oil, as recommended by Bajaj).
    :)

well,ep 90 is actuaLLY thinner then ep 140.i used 140 for quite a some time not the motul though,it was castrol.
well for ep 90 is better then 140 as it can penetrate the chain better...

Thanks for your help guys! Well I couldnt let a fine Saturday morning just go by, so I cleane the chain with the SAE 140 I had..guess I'll just get an SAE 90 tomorrow and re-lube it! One question tho..since O-rings have lubs sealed inside them, and external cleaners / lubes are not suppused to penetrate them, isn't a more viscous SAE 140 better??

You can also use TVS chain spray its a very good lube compared to all the chain lubes available in the market doesnt attract much dirt like motul its cheaper & lasts much longer than the motul a complete VFM product.
Regarding my experience with sae90 gear oil it splatters on the rear wheel and also the lube goes off quickly from the chain if i do speeds like 115-120.

my suggestion is just buy TVS chain lube and feel the difference between the both.

I bought the Bajaj Chain Lube and used it. Its really sticky, slimy, gooey, glue. I will never use it ever again. On my first service, the PBC guys sprayed the chain lube generously, not only over the chain, but the rear wheel rim, tyre and swing arm. It attracted a load of dust and dirt too.

I had the same experience with OKS chain spray too. I guess all chain sprays are the same.

Just try the TVS chain lube and feel the difference by yourself.

I had used oks chain lube, motul & sae90 gear oil now at present using TVS chain lube very much satisfied with the product its not at all sticky like motul, holds to the chain very good even at high speeds and in the heavy rains too.

MOTUL chain lube is the worst among all the lubes as per my experience it is very sticky attracts lots of dirt easily goes off from the chain during the rains and lastly it is very much over priced.

For my P200, OKS spray is just fine. I never use oil since it becomes sticky and along with dust it leaves sludgy kind of thing on both sprocket areas, chain.
I have used motul (not happy), release on(real crap). the squeking sound comes back after 200kms or so (same with oils). And if you notice in slow mo.the chan does not travel freely.
I do 300kms touring once a month and always carry the OKS spray along.
One more thing what i noticed with OKS is that it is self cleaning.
I follow these steps: Spray all over the chain (in and out) in stationary; after few sec. ideal the bike in first gear (in stand) for a min. (the spray gets splashed all over the wheel, i can live with that); it gets cleaned and then again spray generously in and out. Now its good to go for another 300kms.

Can WD40 be used to clean the chain? The can says it can be used on bicycle and motorcycle chains. The can also says "It stops squeaks, cleans, lubricates and protects"
I have an o ring chain. The local wholesale dealer in my city sells 400ml cans at Rs180/-

WD-40 cans are sold in grams and not in ml. For eg. a 170gm can is sold for Rs.197. I use WD-40 and am happy with it but would also like to try TVS chain lube as well.

Yes,WD-40 can be used to clean the O ring chain.Infact it makes the chain linkages more free & the chain rolls smoothly. But it can't be used as a chain lubricant.SAE-90 gear oil or any other chain spray should be applied after spraying with WD-40.
