  • Some Unicorn Questions

    Hi,

I got my Unicorn Dazzler in June, 2010 and have since completed 1800kms as
of today. My questions about biking and the Unicorn are:

    a. Running in: Officially, the manual says 500kms will do, but I've stayed below 55kmph to this day, just to be safe. What speed/rpm would be safe after this many kilometers?

    b. Engine Oil: I've read a lot about synthetic engine oils on this forum. Would it be a good idea to start using synthetic oils? Is it recommended? Any warnings/ caveats? Which are the good brands (I've heard of Petronas being good. Does some one know a trustworthy place in Chennai, where I can get it?) ?

    Thank you.

    EDIT: SOLVED.

      some other questions:

I'm told that I should use synth oils only after 3000kms. Is this true? Does that mean the running in takes 3000kms?

Also whenever I leave my bike for a week or so without riding it, it tends to stop and sputter a lot more that the usual cold starts, is that because of dust in the petrol?

Is a NGK Iridium Spark Plug a recommended upgrade?

        HI,
        1. Your running-in is done and now you can rip the bike. As in rev it right upto the redline dont worry! But make sure the engine is well warmed up whenever you do so, never redline your bike when the engine is cold!!

        2. Where engine oils are concerned i had a Unicorn for 2 years (now sold) and tried most of the oils available (not the synthetic ones) but I think for Honda the Honda engine oil is the best, seriously. Otherwise Shell 20W40 is also great (very smooth).

Well regarding cold starts, that is a problem with most of the Honda Bikes and what i have found is it goes on increasing as the days you keep it idle increase!! Anyway a tip from my side is engage the throttle a little bit and then thumb the starter. Keep the bike idling at 2-3K RPM for abt 30-40 seconds (using the throttle ofcourse) before riding off. Gives a chance for the oil to work up into the engine.
RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!

Thank you very much for the info . I'm also considering a white halogen bulb is that advisable for my bike? Good Brands?
          Thanks again.

OR Use choke to start and ride for a kilometer using half choke, I do this on my Unicorn 2005.

I tried shell 20w40 and I was so much irritated with it that I drained it into a drain within a week, don't know why it didn't suit me despite good reviews from other users.

Would it be a good idea to start using synthetic oils?
I am using Castrol power one racing 4t(synthetic) and I am happy with it.
Fellow members here don't recommend fully synths below 5000kms on the odo, Heard that some cars come with synthetics from the factory itself so may be no harm using synths from the beginning.

The cold start problem is something I was used to, its just that after 2 weeks without riding, the bike became so unresponsive, I was beginning to think something bigger was afoot.

Thanks for the advise on the oils I'll stick to the company's oil.

What kind(voltage/watts) bulb is safely used with the unicorn?

              Thanks again.

EDIT: I found the voltage details on the official website.

The stock bulb in your dazzler is 35W it was 35W in the Unicorn atleast. But let me tell you a white halogen bulb (35W) may look great but it is useless at night on the roads which do NOT have white lines on them or reflectors on the side of the road (on the fence etc), since the white light gets scattered all over and there is no focus.
Though a 55W Osram night breaker provides pretty descent lighting but u will have to find a good mech to do the wiring appropriately or the battery might go for a toss (which is the delicate part).
Are you Not happy with your stock headlight? My advice is do not use white bulbs, original yellow one has much better focus, unless you are getting a 55W osram nightbreaker which is kind of whitish in colour! and pretty good too!!

Thats a lot of info, thanks. I'm getting the Osram Nightbreaker, since the stock bulb isn't very bright.

yes, the white light is useless and also on-comers will feel irritated.
Before installing a nightbreaker first try normal 55w h4 halogen and observe the battery(if it can take the load).
I used 55w halo in my unicorn and I can feel only 20% improvement that too for lowbeams only(tried Bosch, Philips, Osram).

Read this thread and you will get an idea

the thread on the electrical details looks complicated, I'll go through it and decide, thanks

                        In very simple terms
Unicorns current is divided into battery charging + lighting.
The battery charging current is always the same(which is less) even if you use the headlights or not.
This charging current is not sufficient if you use 55w bulb depending upon your day time ride(battery charges) + night ride(more discharge than charging).

so if you want more light, you need more current & you have the options of coil rewinding mod + conversion to all DC. Tonnes of info available in Universal Threads section.

Yeah I was looking at HIDs as well, since they all involve DC conversion... I saw some good threads on that as well, looks like I have some research and a few decisions ahead of me

Yeah HIDs do require all DC Conversion, I had an 8000 Kelvin power HID on the Unicorn and it was super bright. The high beam used to trouble even oncoming buses and trucks on the highway at night. Full DC converted ofcourse but an issue with the HID was it was not very effective in the stock reflector bcoz of the same problem "focus". It used to throw light wildly (a lot of it though) but scattered. So if u want to go for a HID replace the stock reflector with a Projector, to take full advantage. Otherwise go in for coil rewinding and get a 55W halogen, it should work fine in stock reflector.

P.S. I presume you are aware that doing any of these above mods will avoid your warranty

Yeah I read about the crazy HIDs, I'm trying to get a white HID, which should be legal. Of course warranty will be void, but it doesn't matter
