i felt it was due to the design of the fuel tank initially...whenever i was on a straight(national highway) for quite a long time and was just above reserve, it happened...i assumed the petrol on the right side of the tank didnt flow onto the left side because whenever i stopped and tilted the bike or for that matter even swirled the bike while riding itself for the petrol to splash and come onto the other side, i never had to put it on reserve...as you did..

the svc guys always told me there wasnt a problem...but during my 2nd service i put them to work and asked them to rectify the problem whatever it was..when i got back the bike that problem went away...when asked about it they just told me that they changed the fuel guage...unbelievable but its working fine for me...

more than 5months now and i have never faced that problem again...well you can still keep your tank full it may help..

1more thing to add...now especially in summer even when your tank is full and you face this..do not fret...due to the direct sun fuel in the lines and carb evaporates naturally and fuel doesnt flow due to cranking pressure....solution is simple...just open the lid and start the bike...it will start...

i got you, i will keep that in mind!
by the way, can loose chains be an issue for low pickup?

yes plus the loose chain will keep rubbing against swing arm rubber buffers, frame spacers and all...and the sprockets will also suffer...but keep in mind a very tightened chain is even worse than a loose one..so be careful that you moderately tighten it..
A very good and safe biker not only because he can pop up either of the wheels, scrape his knees on a corner or go fast and make it look stylish but because he very well knows his limits and capabilities and has the patience to learn about others and ride safe ! :)

Maybe even a perfect tuning can solve the pick-up problem. i have seen many a times that SVC people don't tune the bike perfectly, because of which we face low pick-up and mileage problems. So if you know some local mechanic who is good in tuning then get it tuned from him. its just a 5 minutes job. nothing to open just the screwing work.

@nirban -- regarding the first issue, I also felt the similar issue way back..... and later suggested by my friend to open the lid and let some air flow in the tank..... no idea how or why it happened..... but the simple solution helped..... on next servicing, this issue was resolved.....
