  • RTR 160 Rear tyre issue!!!

    Hi,

I have been riding the TVS apache 160 for the past 4 years... I sort of never had any issues with my stock rear/front tvs tyres..(which I see is a problem to many here!!!! )..anyways so after 37k kms last year I had to change me tyres. So I asked the service center guy to replace with the stock tyres..but he Fitted a TVS jumbo tyre at the rear..looks good!! (not sure of the rules to post a pic. you can google it to have a look)
...i have not experienced any rains after that..today I had the first experience in rain with Jumbo tyre..and trust me it scared shit outta me!!! with little brake application (speed was at some 25kmph on a ghat), it started skidding and I fell (nothing happened though)....I have been a strict biker for all these years and never got scared so much ....now I am not sure what to do, only option is to change the tyre...but to which one I dunno!!! I remember the stock tvs tyres were damn good..as I had been to many trips in rain and never had an issue...except once when I had replaced the brake pad, thats when I did not realize...anyways.I have asked the service center guy to have a look at the issue..not sure hows he is going to do it!!!

and to whichever Tyre store I go, I am not sure if they are at all aware of grips and all...they will just try to sell!!! I dont want to risk my life!!

plzz help me with this issue ppl!!!

So you need new tires for your bike, right? Which riding conditions do you ride,I mean off roading or driving in highways, city etc or any other???? .also What about your budget?

The tyre looks good enough to handle wet weather i think it may have been overinflated which would have caused the skid.
Currently i am running on MRF Zappers but i was more stisfied with the stock tyres.
Never upgrade without getting your basics RIGHT.

Zappers are way to go 120 rear and stock size rear you would not face grip issue anywhere.
We xbhpians pledge to wear helmet while riding

I ride on Highways/city (mostly Touring)....may be 1.4k to 2.5k..but safety first rather than budget for me...

ya mann it LOOKS good ... I am on it...i have reduced the pressure than normal...but I felt the skid was unusual!!! How is the zapper performance on wet surfaces? Ya I too am thinking of stock tyres but not sure where to get em from in pune/mumbai..the service center guyz could not help me in finding em

not before but during...as in wanted to slow down the bike on the ghat while it was descending though I should have tried shifting the gear down..so with just slight application it started fishtailing and I was on the ground!!!

I am planning to look for stock tyres first..can you please specify which zapper is appropriate with size specs?

You have 18" rim or rear and 17" rim on front right? Get Zapper Q 100/9-18 for rear.

Swap to MRF Zapper Q 100/90 18'' for rear & MRF Zapper FS 90/90 17'' for front. That should help.

Hey newguy1, I understand your plight! The stock tyres are indeed good for a specific time period, say 2 years or the specified number of kilometers. I had similar issues with my Victor previously. After 3 years the stock tyres started to scare the hell out of me even at low speeds on wet surface.

I shifted to Zapper Q, initially it was great but after a year it was worse than the stock tyres. So please, do a little research before shifting to Zapper Q. Maybe, other Zappers won't give much trouble.

Lastly, I doubt if it is the tyres that makes the TVS bikes skid - I somehow feel it has something to do with the chasis and geometry of the TVS bikes. Nevertheless, I own a RTR 180 ABS now.

That's completely a new feed back about zapper Q.. Then what about pilot sporty 100/90-18 @ rear?

This might be due to how you did braking, even i have experienced the same with Zapper Q in a downhill braking but managed and didn't fall. You might have applied the front brake as usual which made the rear so light that even with small braking it would lock, after it gets lock ultimately you are out of balance. so always use rear brake more than the front during downhill braking.

I am using 100/90 18 zapper Q at the rear and 100/80 zapper Q (R15 rear tyre) at the front. Believe me the braking is amazing with that front and rear as both are soft compound tyres. anyhow the wet performance is not so good or very bad. Zappers are way better than those stock.

Again braking on any surface without scaring yourself depends on how you brake. Braking is not same across all conditions and practice different pattern of braking or another simple option is to go for the RTR180 ABS.
Definitely i would have bought myself a RTR180 ABS if i am not getting my Honda CBR250 .

I never felt issues with bikes body...coz I had no trouble for almost 3 years..Trust me I mostly go on trips in the Rains...I never had a single skid. touchwood...speeds average upto 60-65....the issue started when tires treads were totally gone....
I dunno if there are any foolproof tires for wet surfaces Well you seem to have a different experience with zapper Q!!! I seriously need to think a lot before buying em!!!
                              btw Hows ABS helping?

Well I remember not applying the front brake...may be its coz of the front Dunlop tire whose grip was real real good in comparison to my rear TVS tire....Front tire was sticking to the surface like a leach..real sticky I say...rear tire was inflated well above nominal pressure(I dint expect rain)....Now I have deflated the rite below nominal pr. Will do some testing and then decide whether to change..I hope this testing wont result in more fishtailing ..
But still Zapper Q/(other zappers) have mixed reviews..I am not sure which one to choose!!!
