  • Why is the ZMR so heavy?

    Hi friends,
Why is Karizma ZMR so heavy? Its almost 160 kgs, whereas the R15 weighs just 75% of it (~120 kgs). I know that the Yamaha sibling is shorter than the ZMR, but does it matter that much?
These 40 extra kilos make steering difficult in intense traffic. I see the ZMA-R's, Pulsars & the Yamahas tearing thru traffic, but my ZMR remains stuck where it was!
Plus, I fear about crashing the RVM's when moving through tight spaces in traffic.
My question is; is there a way I can reduce the weight of my ZMR?
    Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.
Because everyone who passes, isn't a martyr!

^^ you could, but then you would have to strip the bike and practically remove everything from it.

      Its heavier for various reasons.

The packaging and design of the engine. The dimension of the bike ( the purpose of the chassis, heavier because its a dirt bike chassis as well, needs to be stronger, and is of old design ).

The dimension of wheels, design of alloys, The tank is also made from a thicker gauge of metal ( atleast my friend's 04 model did, dont know the current scenario ).

The R15 is a compact package, with a dedicated chassis design which helps reduce weight. The design of the suspension, dimension, also help in reducing weight.

Bottom line - Its the difference in technology and development which make the R15 lighter and faster.

Sharan - With due respects, you need to learn more of rear skidding & dynamics of your motorcycle before you could start modding on shedding weight - http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/help-me/...que-fault.html

What about the warranty on the motorcycle? Is it over yet? Do not mod the bike while it is still under warranty.

Like JD says, both are two different technology, launched by two different companies & there're several factors affecting things. A poorly ridden R15 can also easily over taken by a Rx135. So pls compare ZMA to ZMA or ZMR to ZMR. If I were you, I'd start with riding another ZMA/ZMR that is quite identical to the one I own.

the zma/zmr are based on the CRF225 engine and chassis design. Essentially a dirt or off road motorcycle chassis.

Boy, its the desi Hayabusa. The stickers, paint-jobs match the 'busa to a T. In appearance, its as fast as 'busa should if it had (approx) 1100cc less

^^Junk the lower part of fairing and you shall have a good Motorcycle to tour on.

                @JD - Isn't it CRF-230?

                      What is your height?

Yes the ZMR is heavy. But I have never felt any problems in handling the bike in city. The only time I feel its weight is when I have to park it/remove it from parking from tights spots in crowded Pune. I can't visualize the "tearing thru traffic vs remains stuck" comparison that you have mentioned. A decent rider should be able to maneouvre all these bikes well.

Pls don't compare it with other bikes like R15. Surely you don't ride your ZMR with the this-machine's-40kgs-heavier thought in your mind. Ride in the correct gears and you should be fine. If you recently switched from a much lighter bike, like I did, from the ultra light and handling delight Yamaha RX100, then you just need to get used to the extra weight, which you gradually will.

Let me tell you that the ZMR has an excellent built quality. The fairing will protect you, if you happen to fall, don't ask me how do I know this...

The RVMs are very good, they offer great visuals, but yes can cause a space crunch. Fold them inwards slightly to suit the traffic you're riding in.

Please don't bother to think about reducing weight. With the kind of pathetic service quality HH workshops provide, we would be lucky if we can manage to keep this bike in stock condition and running as it should, for a few years to come.

oops sorry... missed it by 5. yup the crf230... The chassis is the based on the same bike. And its atleast 10 years old in comparision to the chassis of the R15.

I guess the 'feeling of extra weight' is caused due to the higher CG of the ZMR as compared to the CBR. There is nothing you can do to possibly rectify it apart from getting used to it. Each bike is unique and has handling characteristics unique to it. I am sure in a couple of months, you will get used to the handling and will not get 'stuck where it was'.

After I got the mirror stalks on my P220 extended, I also felt as if they will crash into surrounding vehicles in traffic. The only solution to this is to fold them down in such cases(thats very easy to do on a P220, no idea about ZMR). I even fold them down to help me park the bike in tight parking spots.

I dont know all these technical jagrons, but for me my weight to ZMR weight ration is perfect match....

I do the teraring through traffic part you told all the time, and i beat all the bikes at all times... I am 1:2 ratio to the bike weight(cant really post it directly here) & 5'11"
