  • [Help Me] Weak front disc brake on SZ-R

    Hello All,

I have been facing problem with front disc brake since I purchased my SZ-R. When I showed this problem at the first service they said disc brake will be fine after 1K to 1.5 K kms.

Then I moved to Pune and gave the bike for 2nd and 3rd servicing at YFS Pune, asking them to fix the front disc, it wasnt fixed. Yesterday completed 4th servicing and again asked them to fix the front disc it wasnt.

The problem with the disc brake is it is not sharp, it doesnt have any bite in it. I have to pull the brake lever hard to get it working as expected. My bikes rear brakes are sharper than the front disc.

Now What should I do? I tried escalating this with Yamaha but YFS ended up giving some useless reasons. I also cleaned the disc with soap water let it dry and took a test ride still same problem.

Need you all suggestion on below points -

    - What should I check to get the disc working as expected?
    - Do I need to get disc pad / brake oil etc replaced?
    - What can be possible reason for poor bite of front disc?

Please help me with this, I am fed with Yamaha YFS servicing, shall I approach outside mechanic to get it checked? Would it void any kind of warranty? Rest everything is perfect with my bike, just this front disc is having problem.

    - Lalit

      Questions to you Lalit...
      1. How're you sure that the front brakes can be improved? Have you tried riding another SZ or may be FZ (as they share the same brake setup) This is not a question to your knowledge, but, trying to eliminate a possibility.

      2. Is it that you have to pull your front lever harder for braking OR no matter however you pull, the braking is ineffective?

      3. Open the master cylinder & check the color of the brake oil. Is it bright red or yellowish & dirty?

      4. If there're issues, then they could be at...
      a. The piston at the front lever
      b. The worn out brake pads (which is highly unlikely 'cause I believe you would've done not more than 10K)
      c. Inadequate or poor quality of brake oil
      d. Air bubbles inside the brake hose
      e. Jammed pistons at the caliper
So the key is to identify where the issue lies without which the braking cannot be improved, if there's a genuine issue.

and I take the ASC would've cleaned the brake pads.

                Hi Aargee,

Have you completed your epic journey? Kudos to you and your machine! Truely amazing!

                1. I have ridden Fazer for good 30 kms on mixed environment city and highway, and braking of Fazer is top notch! The brakes are sharp on my friends fazer, if you ask me the comparision i would say my SZ-R brakes are not even 10% of that Fazer. I will try and get a test ride of another SZ-R to check braking on it but not sure about it though.
                2. Yes I need to pull the lever hard for braking, if I pull it hard the brakes works fine. What I can say it is, that the brakes are spongy, i mean when we apply front disc from stand still to some movement it should stop immediately with a jerk which happens in case Fazer but in my case it is like applying a drum brake and just a note my bikes rear drum brakes are sharper than the front disc.
                3. The oil in the master cylinder is Red.
                4. Yes my bike did not run much nearly 3200 kms (I know its very less :P), the front wheel rorates just fine when I put bike on main stand.

I got a call from YFS Pune yesterday about the servicing and I showed my disappointment towards the lack of work on front brake, I called them again today, they will be giving me a call on this later today evening.

Also I would like to seek an advice, what if Yamaha says they cant do anything with it? Should I approach local mechnic?

The reason I am disappointed and worried about front brake is, I use front brake most of the time and the best part is they are made by Bybre and still without any bite!

Looks like the issue is with the piston at the brake lever OR air inside the hose OR the pistons at the caliper are getting jammed & not releasing soon as expected.

If its still under warranty, push for it without spoiling your reputation; avoid paying out of your pocket.

sounds like your brake pads are worn out, better get it checked at svc before you damage your disc plate

Write a mail to Yamaha. Get the Service Centre to work on it, till you are satisfied. I think there is a DIY thread on changing the disk pads, which also has details on how to remove the air bubbles, you can try that, though I assume that isn't the problem. Sit with the Service Centre guys and make them first remove the entire setup, clean all the parts and fix them back again. If all else fails, make them change the entire setup under warranty, if needed.

                        Here is an update:

Went to SVC today to check the front disc, the mechnic opened the disc brake and also taken out pads. There was a lot of muddy dust due to rain which was dry. He cleaned it out, rubbed it with the sand paper, oiled some caliper part dont know what it is exactly called.

After that brake improved but not to my satisfaction. I told him this he said that the brake will improve, the brake less bite as he have rubbed it with the sand paper , I told him that I will check it today and tomorrow and if it doesnt improves then I will come back.

Any suggestions / advice on it?

It has to be sharp from day 1; did you conform the pad wear & tear if its within the acceptable limits?

i hope that after some run in, the discs should get the desired bite.
If still the problem persists, please ask the mechanic at the ASS to check the quality of the brake fluid. if you have some spare cash in pocket can also try refilling the brake fluid with DOT 4 grade oil (or as specified in manual).

Sponginess of the discs are generally due to the issues of brake fluid; (air bubbles or improper grade)

but please also test ride some other sz for comparing the scope of improvement.

I agree with Aargee. The issue has to be with cylinders if it's a problem from day one, it could be a defective one (it happens).

Check both Master and Slave cylinder. The slave cylinder is near the caliper and the master one is near the brake lever.

Don't fret, If you still have the warranty, write a mail to Yamaha back office and ask them you need a change of the following

                              - Master and Slave cylinder
                              - Brake Pads
                              - Brake Fluid
                              - As they are replacing the brake fluid, have them bleed it once.

Basic rule: Don't use any kind of Lube on the discs. If you feel it's dirty, give it a wipe.

@Aargee, FZ and SZ have different brake setups. FZ has a larger rotor.
