oil in airfilter box-fz
hii, i am having fz-s roamed upto 27k km...when i opened the airfilter ..i hav seen some amount of oil in the box...what is the reason of oil being there..and will there be any problems caused due to it?Last edited by sunilg; 01-13-2012, 04:01 PM.Yamaha fzs (2009-2012)||Honda unicorn(2012-2013)|| Hero karizma R (2013 - 2016)||Honda CBR 250R(2016)||Honda Hornet(2016-Present)

Is the air filter soaked up in oil or it looks and feels dry?
Since all FZ comes with paper type air filter getting oil in there is wierd.There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.

AFAIK,FZ have a paper type air filter.The oil in the air filter box might be because of the oil vapours from PCV valve pipe connected to the airbox,not sure though.Check if there is any oil deposit on air filter.Last edited by Drifty; 01-14-2012, 01:06 AM.

I am not too sure if this is the correct troubleshooting. Do you tend to keep the fuel regulator on ON or RESERVE instead of OFF?? if so then the carb tends to overflow and as a result one may get oil, smuck deposits in the air filter.
Others may be able to help you out better.

Yes it is the oil from the engine breather connected to the clean air side of air box.I do not know if there is a PCV valve in line with the breather in FZ, but the oil vapour from the crank case is vented into the Air Box in most 4 stroke engines and it is this oil vapor deposit which forms into small oil collection.Originally posted by Drifty View PostAFAIK,FZ have a paper type air filter.The oil in the air filter box might be because of the oil vapours from PCV valve pipe connected to the airbox,not sure though.Check if there is any oil deposit on air filter.When Was The Last Time,You Did Something For The First Time.

If the air filter is dry paper type, the source of the oil in the airbox is indeed the crankcase breather tube. It is aggravated(more oil collects there) when you overfill engine oil over the max mark on the dipstick . If the oil is not wetting the paper filter element in anyway, there is nothing to worry about . Wipe it off while servicing the filter every time .Originally posted by psr View PostYes it is the oil from the engine breather connected to the clean air side of air box.I do not know if there is a PCV valve in line with the breather in FZ, but the oil vapour from the crank case is vented into the Air Box in most 4 stroke engines and it is this oil vapor deposit which forms into small oil collection.

Its from the crank case breather hose.Nothing to worry about unless there is excess amount of Oil in a short time.
@PSR
is it ok to leave the hose in the open?i.e if i have a FF Filter connected to the carb and i remove the Air Box.Last edited by RanjithMN; 01-14-2012, 10:37 PM.Smoke rubber,not tobacco.

No do not leave the breather open to outer air....the suction present will let in all the gook from outside air into the crankcase ,where the crankshaft gear etc., live...It will lead to quick death of bearings,and engine..which is why the breather is connected to the clean air ,after air filter...Most FF filter also allow more dirt to go directly into the inlet and into the engine, leading to accelerated engine wear and failure..Originally posted by RanjithMN View PostIts from the crank case breather hose.Nothing to worry about unless there is excess amount of Oil in a short time.

Hmm,i have anyway placed a custom made Filter box(foam filter) for both the hoses.Originally posted by psr View PostNo do not leave the breather open to outer air....the suction present will let in all the gook from outside air into the crankcase ,where the crankshaft gear etc., live...It will lead to quick death of bearings,and engine..which is why the breather is connected to the clean air ,after air filter...Most FF filter also allow more dirt to go directly into the inlet and into the engine, leading to accelerated engine wear and failure..

since there is much air movement in the stock Air Box as there is no Air Intake.hope that should be fine

A while back I opened up my filter box and found a noticeable puddle of oil. As Psr Sir, said, its coming from the tranny breather tube. After contacting the SVC mech, got to know that this is normal if found in small amounts, and if by chance there's excess amount, even then there's no reason to worry, cause its caused by filling excess oil. The excess oil is forced out through the breather tube and in my case that was true, since I had accidentally filled 100Ml(1L instead of 900Ml, measurement error.) more during the last oil change.Motorcycling Experience:

Not much experienced, but wont that result in constant pumping out of oil??? I believe thats not the case here.Originally posted by shoeb2015 View PostPSr ji ,
Can it happen due to excessive pressure buildup in the crankcase due to worn piston rings(causing blow-by) ?I am asking this because I have seen old cars with worn piston ring to foul the filter with oil via pcv.
