  • Pouring kerosene in Silencer??

Just the other day I went with my friend to a local garage for tightening his his bike's chain(rtr 160). After the work was done that mechanic, on his own poured some kerosene in the silencer (from silencer's outlet hole) & started the bike. When I asked him the reason for pouring the kerosene into the silencer, he said it will prevent the rusting of the silencer? Is this true? Will this help in cleaning the silencer from inside by any means? Or will this cause any damage to the silencer? Though the bike is running perfectly fine now, I just want to know from experts here what will happen by doing this.

          never heard of it.
May damage the cat-con, will can cause more carbon buildup.
Btw, no need to clean the silencer in 4 strokes.

Kerosene will evaporate after the silencer becomes hot, that's what'll happen.

Kerosene will drain out from the drain hole first..

Kero will soak into the glass wool/steel wool insulation, excess will drip out the drain hole. When the bike is started the kero will evaporate.
I hope you didn't pay for this nonsense.
If your mech does crap like this I think its time to find a new mech.

Maybe he (the mech) wanted a flaming exhaust.

He forgot one major step, to insert a burning beedi in the silencer after putting the kerosene. Then you would have seen what he meant by a 'fiery performance'!

                    Change the mech

your mech seems to be old school...
this was of help for scooter and for cleaning exhausts for 2 strokes with expansion chanbers.. but for 4 strokes, this is not needed... it does more harm than the benefits..

change the mech... who knows, one fine day, you may find reed valves fitted to your bike!!

@ Amit - Avoid the mech or do the repairs in front which are prescribed for 4 stroke engines.

something similar here, my mechanic puts some lube oil in silencer after servicing. when i first observed that i immediately stopped him and now he doesn't put it in my bike. but does so in other bikes.

the oil he puts in silencer is SAE90 oil that he uses to lubricate external parts like side stand center stand etc.

one thing i would like to mention is my mechanic is the best pulsar mechanic i have ever seen, and believe me i have seen a lot. and he also works at BAL ASS.

so it seems there is some kind of myth going around these mechanics.

but putting lubricating oil in silencer does have its effect. after lube treatment, the silencer sound turns a bit more "bassy" with more "bass" and "treble" is reduced. so finally you get a very nice sounding bike after servicing, and customer gets happy.

the logic he gives is - it prevents rusting from inside and helps keep the silencer healthy.

don't know if it helps the silencer or not, but i have only changed my silencer once and my bike has clocked 90,000 + kms.

                              regarding kerosene, i don't know.
