    How can a silencer catch rust from inside??
    May be possible for petrol powered car silencer (only muffler). But not in a bike i believe. Because, silencer in our punny little air cooled bikes used to get blazing hot, no chance of water puddle inside, then how can it rust?

      well, silencers do get rusted, and since there is no place outside the silencer on cylindrical surface for water to accumulate, we can say the rusting happens from inside, and it happens in all silencers at almost the same spot.

      just use google, you may find a lot of info about it.

        ^^ok didnt knew its so common..
        I have not seen any bike personally with this problem so posted.
        May be it happens to not so used bikes or due to inferior quality petrol..

          @all
          Okies...........so this is it. henceforth I will never allow that mechanic to do this, at least in my bike.
          What Prince said is correct, even I have seen that mechanic pouring oil in other bike's silencer to avoid rusting. So now its time to find a new mechanic. Thanks everyone.

            ROTFLMAO!!! dude!!! is he a mechanic or a music director to add treble & bass ? Prince, you made my day man!!!

              putting heavy grade oil into the silencer does make it sound more bassy.
              This is because when the internals are coated with oil, the high frequency waves (trebble ) are better absorbed and this results in predominance of low frequency pressure waves ( bass ). Hence the feeling of bassy exhaust..

              A silencer is always designed for dry operation and uses glass wool. If you put any oil or non evaporative liquid, you are adding restriction to your exhaust.. So basically you are ruining your own exhaust..
              Also, since your exhaust is now running choked, it will have much higher avg pressures and combine this with higher temperatures, you are reducing the life of the silencer drastically...

                All this had started when the 1st gen passion and Pulsar exhausts started rotting and falling off. The mechanics put in oil and block the opening and rev the bike to drain off excess oil. I had asked why, he said we have observed that "Jo silencer me oil dala vo sada nahi"

                he did that to my bike too. I went for a ride, ripped like crazy and suddenly I was riding a 2storke... LOL!

                  diesel and kerosene has some cleaning properties. but pouring a flammable substance to an area that is likely to get heated up to high temperatures is foolishness.

                    have to convince my wife also..

                    sorry for OT.
