  • severe Back pain riding unicorn Dazzler.suggest modifications

I have recently bought a used dazzler from my friend.I am getting severe back pain/shoulder pain while riding it (i.e after 15-20kms).
    I am 5"11.
Any suggestions like changing handle bar or modifiying seat to improve comfort?
if yes which handlebar i should go for?

Just checked with 2 mechanics.one is honda mechanic.he said rear shocks might be the problem.
Other mechanic told it might be coneset or front shocks...
I am feeling its something to do with the handlebar as the pain is in the upper back side..
    Please help.

    Is this your first bike?

Did you face the same back pain while riding other bikes too?

Do you have any history of injuries to the back or any other health condition that might be causing the back pain?

    Are you physically fit?

is the road you usually ride on is full of potholes?

Do you ride with a heavy weight (like a bag/rucksack) on your back?

Please try to ride some other bike and see if this triggers the same back pain. Also try to change the way you sit on the bike, try to sit as relaxed as possible. This might be problem with either your riding style/condition or your lifestyle rather than the bike because the bike doesn't have much of a sporty riding position that would put too much of pressure on your back.

After you've checked everything the mech and the above post've stated and still the pain exists then that means you're holding the handle wrong.

My previous bikes were pulsar 200 and fiero. I guess both were comfortable.

Do you have any history of injuries to the back or any other health condition that might be causing the back pain?
        NO.

        Are you physically fit?
        Yes

is the road you usually ride on is full of potholes?
Little bit.But pulsar 200 gas shocks was very good.I can even say Jive and splendor shocks are good in the same kinda roads.

Do you ride with a heavy weight (like a bag/rucksack) on your back?
        Nope.

May be yes. We need to adapt to diferent bikes. But i thought dazzler is having commuterish position which is good for long rides within city.
So i guess Handlebar may the problem.
        Any suggestions on new handlebars?
One of my friend has advised Gladiator handlebar or thunderbird handlebar for my height.

I am planning to change it to a new dazzler handlebar itself for the time being to see if that helps..or else have to try some different handlebar.
        Thank you.

Strange... Unicorn is suppose to give you a relaxed ride...
Did the original owner modified the handle?? Compare that with another Unicorn

I have recently changed my handlebar to Unicorn's.(steel).This feels much more comfortable than the Dazzler one.Its taller and a bit wider.
I cannot comment on the comfort of the dazzler handlebar as it was bent on my bike. Since i did not get the original dazzler handlebar,i settled for unicorn handlebar. Glad that its quite comfortable now.
            Thanks everyone for replying.

Go on a long ride and see if your problem has been solved .
              or
Check the rear suspension(for lower back pain) and the front suspension (for shoulder pain).
The front susp. can be re-conditioned by changing fork oil etc..

As you said the stock Dazzler's handlebar is bent, it might be the culprit. I have never seen a single person feeling uncomfortable with Unicorn/Dazzler; the seating stance is commuterish and comfortable.

Here's something that I underwent & that literally got me scared!!!

During Sep 2011, I broke my own barriers on riding; 12 days & I did about 6300+ Kms & highest on a single day was 1396, Mumbai-Chennai. Best part was, after reaching home at 9:00 PM (started at 3:13 AM Mumbai), I was updating T'Logs at 11:00 PM. I was so confident & so strong.

After the trip, I was held up with work like mad from Sep-Dec 2011. I got so busy that I saved sometime going to office, which is about 2hrs a day & was given the liberty to work from home. So I used to clock close to easily 13 hours a day with work & sometimes including the weekends.

In between during Nov 2011, when I'd to office to pickup a spare laptop, I couldn't ride for more than 12-13 Kms before which I developed back pain; initially I thought it was due to the heavy backpack (damn Swiss gear weighs about 10-15 Kg with laptop). But then, when I'd to make some short runs to city without the backpack, I still developed the pain. I got so nervous & almost concluded, that was the end of my motorcycling.

Then one day, I was casually talking about this backache to a colleague of mine in US, he pointed that it could be due to spending extended hours with work. I took his suggestion serious & took a break from work for about a week (and another week prior to which there was handing over period, making two weeks away from real work). After I resumed work in Jan 2012, it was a great miracle that I didn't observe the pain anymore.

Infact I decided to test this & made a quick dash to Chennai-Kolli hills-Chennai on 26-Jan, which is about 750+ Kms. What a surprise, there was nothing observed; I'm confident that I'm as strong as what I was before.

Point - Sometimes its just more than a bike, suspension, road; its time to take a break, look at our lifestyle & give some attention to ourselves.

Check for the alignment and the handle 'balance'. It often so happens that during transportation, the handles get bent and thus the handlebars get oriented to one side. In my case, when I bought my new Hunk, the right side was a little higher (negligibly) but went to the showroom and got it corrected!
You have no idea how much a little handlebar bend can cause much harm in terms of ride quality/comfort!

                    Rest apart, enjoy your steed!

Thank you...I have ridden more than 500kms after the handlebar change and i feel its very comfortable. No shoulder pain or back pain.

Thank you.Yes problem was because of the dazzler's bent handlebar.Only difference i can feel with the unicorn handlebar is,I need to take big u-turns as its slightly taller and wider.
