  • Shell Ultra 10W40 Oil Pulsar 135LS

    Hi Frnz,
I ve filled my bike (pulsar 135ls) with Shell Ultra (10W40) oil.
previously i got too much vibration around (50-55kmph) , but now it is ok.
the problem is i m getting a unusual smell(can't express it clearly !! sorry) from the engine.

will it trouble the engine ?
is the oil which i ve used is ok ?

previously i ve used bajaj (20W50) oil.

i ve completed a 100km run after the new oil(shell ultra 10W40) change.

    Total Km completed : ~9000

      hey vickyxbhp,

I don't think this is a big issue. Shell Advance Ultra is Fully Synthetic oil from Shell and is also the costliest one. One thing though, do you get this smell everytime you ride or only after long runs ?

Check your bike's bore/head for any sort of leakage or smoke from exhaust, then you need to visit Bajaj svc station for a quick fix.

Dont worry, not an major issue.

The recommended grade for the 135LS is 20W50. The reason is simply because the high revving engine is very suseptible to really high temperatures and you need an engine that can still stay at an acceptable viscousity inorder for your engine to functions without stress.

the 10W40 is less viscous at 100 degree celcius than the 20W50. hence 40 vs 50 not having proper oil grade will damage your engine in the long run due to heat stress.

They are right. It should not cause any issue unless you rev your engine to redline everytime you drive. If peace of mind is crux, then I would suggest drain the synthetic and refill with 20W40 mineral. Better more, ask the Bajaj svc guys to pump in their stock 20W50 mineral cause as you said that was working just fine.

Did you check your bike's piston head seals..any leakage there ? Oil getting burnt outside head will be the likely cause for smell.

May sound funny ---- I accidentally or unknowingly spilled some old oil on the engine, silencer and got the wierd smell after riding for a short distance like you.
Reason?? old oil got heated and hence the smell.
Hope this is the case with you and no other damage.

this oil can take a lot of heat stress.. If you are not seeing any loss in oil levels.. The oil is not getting burnt. This oil will not even change color for first 2000 kms. I have used it for 4ks in my fazer.
Have you checked the the oil levels? I doubt you are running low on oil.
If you are using it in a 20w50 recommendation then you should change it soon..

A sureshot way of checking whether this oil is getting burnt (very unlikely if iys original unused oil).. The next time you get that smell, take out the oil on some insulated material and smell it far away from the bike.. If its same, you have the culprit.. If its different.. Chain lube may be the culprit.. Or else tyre may be getting rubbed against some bike part.. Or else fork oil may be leaking.. Etc etc..

xxW40 oil should not be used in a bike where recommendation is to use xxW50

                            oil change time.

yes that is right using xxW40 grade oil where manufacturer has recommended xxW50 isn't a good idea.

I see other problem - how you guys decided that its time to change oil. most of the time i have used bajaj oem 20w50 on my bike(p180) but recently moved to elf moto gold 20w50 and somehow feeling that oil is done with after 1700 km itself. the bike is feeling more noisier - it was all smooth till 1200km. Can oil become bad so soon ? bajaj's 20W50 definitely has worked up till 2.5-3k kms.

^^ I change oil when my bike gets noiseier, gears become harsh/hard and bike vibrates even at its sweet spot. If I get all these symptoms for more than 2-3 days then oil is changed in 3rd-4th day.
For most of the good oils that I have used, change interval varies from 1800km to 2400kms.
And only an oil analysis can tell its useable or not. So change it if you feel so. Peace of mind.
