    Am I being ripped???

    I went to a good mechanic with my friend and asked the head mech to drive my CBZ. After a few minutes driving around, I asked him what all works are required in the bike. He told me that complete engine needs to be opened, also saying that many parts like timing chain, clutch plate, push rod, etc. But the strange thing is that my HH service center mechanic has never told me anything and even I haven't felt the need. OK, the bike's engine sounds a but clunky, but no problems with that. He gave me two options: using lathe on older parts to restore it partially, or replacing the parts by new ones. The costs are 4.5k and 8k for each.

    Do you think the mechanic is ripping me, or there's a need for the engine disassembly? BTW, the bike is pre-owned, three years old and has run 40k km, the last 12k km in my hands.

      First,you need to ask yourself:"Is the bike running as good as it was 12k ago?"
      If you think it's not,then maybe you need to get those parts changed.
      If you feel the bike's not responding to the amount of throttle you are opening or you are missing gears than you need to get the clutch plate changed. I think after 40k,the bike can do with a clutch plates change.It will do no harm. Same is the case with the timing chain.
      Dont know much about push rod so cant comment on that.

      By the way,even I had never had a Bajaj service centre mechanic tell me that I need to change the clutch plates and timing chain on my Discover.
      But when a mechanic from Castrol Bike Zone insisted that it had to be done,I got it done.
      And the effect was profound.Everything about the bike felt different and better. And it cost me a total of Rs 600.

        Wow!! Just 600 bucks and you got a difference! Are you sure that ain't a typo, maybe 6000??? And yet, at the cost being quoted by my mech, I feel being ripped off...I am going for a chainset replacement after a few hundred kms, hoping it would bring a difference. The chain sounds like hssss at the rear sprocket when going through the cycle.

        Even the quotation for light change was coming at 900, where as the HH mech said it comes around 500. It seems time has come to pull out of the market and immerse the sum into my bike.

          If the timing chain is gone, then you will get typical tick-tick noise from the engine. if there is such noise, you will have to change the timing chain and tensioner.

            @diffuser: It must be '600'; Bajaj spares are not expensive.

              @ diffuser911: Dude, A Karizma's Clutch Plate costed Rs. 700 confirmed! Don't know whether it's different from CBZ's... I say get it replaced from HH Workshop now... 40k is high time!

              Reg. timing chain, I don't know exactly but I feel this timing chain, is just the Valve Chain, which connects the valve movement to crankshaft, so that valve can open & close accrd. to crank. It's just a smaller chain & costs no more than Rs. 120 at most!

              I don't know what push rod is...

              Initial Impressions are that he is trying to rip you. But, you'll have to tell us all the parts to be installed, so that all can help you further ... Tell all the parts.

                Did the mechanic really say about the push rod?
                AFAIK, CBZ does not have a pushrod engine!

                  Nope it's Rs 600/- for
                  Genuine Bajaj clutch plates: Rs 280/-
                  Clutch Packing: Rs 36/-
                  Clutch Plate Labor: Rs 125/-
                  Timing Chain: Rs 190+150/-
                  Total: Rs 781/-
                  I paid: Rs 600/-

                  I think you should ask for these two parts only:Clutch Plates and Timing Chain. See if it makes a difference,which it most certainly will.
                  Also you can have a third opinion from any other mechanic.

                              So, Aryan....were you talking abt this...!!! U meant instead of 900 for the light change it would cost 600..
