Fog Lamps: there is very little info on xbhp about fog lamps, and whatever is available is scattered. so i thought lets start a thread. the reason i had put this in "help me" section is - because, i will not be contributing much initially as i am the one asking questions. if mods feel they can shift this thread to "universal thread" section, so that everybody can benefit.

All i know is "Hella" and "Autopal" manufactures some fog lamps.

    i want to install a 12 V, 35 W, DC fog lamp on my P150 UG3 with DC conversion. already running a 35W HID.

i have searched the net and know some options from autopal and hella, but don't know whether they are available in 35 Watt ?

price? any cheaper options available ?

why most fog lamps are available in H3 only ?

    etc etc ...

i know some people on xbhp hve already installed fog lamps and if i remember correctly one guy has a hella Micro DE on his bike. so guys pour in as much info as possible.

I dont think 35 watt halogen will be able to cut through fog. At least 55 watt is needed.
And if one can use lower temp HID (dont know what temp but yellow in color) then that's the best option.

What is the intended purpose, just auxiliary drive lamps or fog lamps??

For fog lamp, yellow color needed, if HID, then 3000K will do. 4300k or higher will be useless.

Hella Comet 550 is a good option, single white cost around 1.3k. Autopal units are cheap ones, cost under 500 bucks, but wont serve the purpose. Neolite is another cheaper alternative.

Prince seen one guy here broked his front fairing of ZMR during stunting & the bike came to fix at my friends garage . As the fairing broken they removed it for fixing & in the mean time fitted a pair of 55 watt fog lamps ( costed 500 rupees ) . They served the purpose very well . Don't have any pic or details now , will try to collect if found .

Me too thinking of adding 2 extra 55 watt lamps on my passion . Looking for skoda or other H7 projector & then will fix H7 55 watt indigo bulbs inside .

I have toyed with fog lamps for a very long time. Primarily because I also use 4 wheeler.

There are various fog lamps in the market, though quiet difficult to source good ones, or more specifically, the one you want.

                    1. Some are purpose built for specific cars. Other are universal, meaning they can be used anywhere.
                    2. They come in different colours.
                    3. Available both in HID (projector fog lamps) or halogen (conventional). H3 is the preferred bulb type.
4 Light focus: Very important See image below.
                    • Wide: Very good for lighting up immediate vicinity and side of the road. Does not blind incoming traffic very much. Throw distance is very limited.
                    • Small beam: Almost like a spot light. Good for lighting up far distant objects, though poor in lighting up immediate vicinity
                    • Normal beam: Much like above above but reasonably big. Good for most applications. Though it blinds incoming traffic very effectively.
                    • There are slight variation in beam pattern like oval. but they one way or the other falls between the wide and narrow beam.

Fog lights does not come in H4 bulbs. So if they are to be used for motorcycles, one would need two lights to act as lo/hi beam.

Currently I am using a strange DIY headlight set up for my car, as I find the factory ones pathetic. Two small beam fog lamps for hi-beam (100+100 watts), and two projector lamps for lo-beam (HID 35+35 watts.). Plus two wide beam fog lamps in the bumper (55+55 watts).

all the Hella lights comes in pair except comet 500 i guess in india and it cost rupees 2000 according to their website. and that excludes lamp cost.

If one can use 55 watts (H4) on stock headlamp. Two 55 watts fog lamps is no problem. One for high and the other for low. Both should not light up at the same time. Little rewiring can do the trick. The challenge would be to, whether you wish to fit the fogs inside the stock headlight assembly. In this case, sourcing the correct size small enough for both fogs to fit in would be challenging. If fogs are to be mounted else where, then simply get a universal fogs and mount them anywhere you fancy. Ideally, battery should be upgraded for higher watts bulbs. I can do it if I want, but not interested as yet, as I do most night driving by car. As mentioned, I already did it for my car. Though, yes, there is more space inside car headlight to play around.

I have seen many bikes using after market projectors lamps inside their stock headlights. The advantage of projectors are its small size. Same trick can be applied using normal fogs small enough to fit in.

The advantages of projectors is not just small size, their use over regular bulbs is to actually provide more even and focused light.
Just because you haven't seen it doesnt mean its impossible...expect the unexpected.
