  • Honda oil

at the Honda ASC they are now using a grey colour bottle instead of the earlier white ones and this is the 10W30 oil....is it safe to use in my activa which has the recomended grade of 20W40?

i read that if the grade is xWy

u can use the oil with any rating(for eg. aWb) as long has a<=x and b>=y

by that logic the 10W30 oil is not sufficent for higher temperatures but will help in colder climates

i asked them is it safe to use this instead of 20W40 he said yes...activa k liye perfect hai...japan se specially import hota hai...

    what do you guys suggest?

I'd suggest ditch the Honda oil and find a oil of 20w40 grade from motul/valvoline/elf/shell.
10w30 will only help in colder conditions i.e. Temperature range of -10'C to 30'C.
Btw, this topic is widely discussed in "engine oil thread" have a look there.

its not -10 to 30 degree

10 and 30 represent viscosity figures at some standard working temperatures i guess...experts can correct me or throw light on it if i'm wrong..

well anyways i hate honda service centres but the nearest shop where i can find bike engine oil is the service centre itself selling only honda oil(offcourse)...no where else i found any shop selling engine oils...the closest i got was a shop selling autorickshaw oil :P

-10 to 30 degree is what shown on my bike & car owner's manual that's why i said so.
And there must be shops around that sells bike oil, try asking local shop people or else go to yamaha parts counter, yamalube is one of the best oils available.

go for the recommended oil grade.. 20w40 or 15w40 or 10w40..
Whether the oil has come from japan or made in sri lanka recommended sae ratings should be followed.

dont underrate honda_cbf he is the engine oil expert at the engine oil thread!! :-)

For dazzler the manual recommends EITHER a 10w30 or a 20w40. I have currently put in this Honda Oil and it has been behaving just as badly as the 20w40 which used to come in before i.e. quite good for the first 200km then as bad as any other used oil till 1500km mark, then oil change.

If you previously regularly used Honda Oil then I suggest do not worry too much about it and put in what your manual recommends and most importantly keep changing the oil at regular and as frequent intervals as you can afford. Simple as that.

Ya go for xxW40 oil. Downgrading to xxW30 is not recommended if bike has used xxW40 oil.

hehe.. now that statement overrates me (though I feel good ) I'm not the engine oil expert guys, I'm just a guy how has interacted with the "real experts" and has some knowledge gained with little experience.

Honda oils are crap (though cant say much about its FS oil). better use oils from valvoline/motul/elf etc etc.. and if bike is in warrenty dont tell anybody that you are using a different oil.

It is a bike not a dog (which gets used to a certain kind of food over time). If it is mentioned in the manual, you can very well use either of the 2 engine oil grades and change between the 2 any time you want. BUT, only if it is mentioned in the manual that you can. Refer the Owners' Manual, it is your best friend in such matters.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

10w30 is recommended in manual but only should be used within 35'C (as per the chart in owner's manual) better make that 30'C for assurance & feel good factor.

Which effectively means that it is only safe to use 10w30 in winters. Which is a good thing since the '10w' bit will help in easier cold starts in early morning. Since it is summer now, it would be better for the Thread Starter to stick to 20w40 for now, not because his bike was running on 20w40 for the last 30k km, but the weather is more conducive for this engine oil. When the winters arrive, 10w30 will be a better choice.

I know you already did that, but I wanted to make a point for an entirely different reason

Sorry everyone if its getting off topic..
I think that 'different reason' is bike getting used to thicker oil, right?
But have seen a splender getting used to 20w40 in first year of purchase and when 10w30 was used on it, oil started disappearing from engine even on winter

Well in that case, then it is either a case of bad running-in / bad maintenance or a manufacturing defect on the part of Hero Honda which should be rectified under warranty (Since the bike in question is just 1 year old). But that would be IF it is mentioned that 10w30 can be used IN THE MANUAL.

And as for the 'different reason', believe me it had nothing to do with this thread or our conversation here. It has to do with the fact that what people feel is right may not always be the right thing to do. The issue is more psychological rather than of engineering origin.
